I was sitting with Chloe on the terrace of her temporary quarters. She seemed to be deeply lost in thought, replaying the intense, coordinated attack we had miraculously withstood earlier that day. I was more than content to let her reflect in peace while I leaned back and observed the night sky. The stars above seemed infinitely more vivid and breathtaking now than ever before.
Maybe they didn't actually change at all, I mused quietly to myself. It is I who changed.
In the past, during my harsh early days in the city, I had been far too consumed by the relentless daily struggle just to make a living and avoid starving to ever pause and take notice of the universe's quiet beauty. My newly upgraded, superhuman eyesight now allowed me to watch the cosmos with startling, crystal-clear definition. Somehow, it offered a strange sense of deep reassurance. They would continue to shine up there unchanged for a long, long time—just like me.
"Are you feeling retrospective, my dear?" Chloe's soft voice gently broke me out of my musing.
"I suppose I am. I was just pondering what our existence actually means in the grand scheme of the universe."
"That is a heavily difficult line of reflection," she murmured, resting her chin on her hand. "I would venture to say that we create our own meaning simply by existing. As such, if you ever feel burdened by your immortality because you haven't yet found some grand, overarching purpose, don't be. It's the lived process that truly matters."
She looked straight into my eyes with an intensity that felt as though she were reading the deepest corners of my soul.
"Do you read thoughts now?" I asked, flashing her a light, joking smile.
"I can smell your shifting emotions. The rest is mere psychological deduction," she answered, a trace of amusement dancing in her red eyes. "Besides, you are far from the first immortal to ponder such existential things."
"How are you so terrifyingly wise? You're only slightly above me in chronological age."
"Purebloods mature much faster," she said with a wry, melancholic smile. "By 'we,' I mean those of my specific bloodline."
I looked at her with a sudden wave of deep sympathy. I instantly understood the heavy implication behind her words. She had never truly experienced a normal childhood. Because my own teenage years had been abruptly cut short by tragedy, I found myself relating to her on a profound level.
When my parents passed away, I had been forced to prematurely leave those carefree years behind and forcefully embrace the crushing weight of adulthood.
Moving deliberately, I drew the chair she was seated on closer to mine. She looked at me, a soft question in her gaze, before gracefully standing up and sliding onto my lap. In that moment, she felt remarkably fragile and delicate—completely contrasting with the terrifying, unrelenting amazon who had unleashed absolute hell across the battlefield earlier that day.
She gently passed a slender hand through my long hair, trailing her fingers lightly before lowering her lips onto mine for a slow, unhurried kiss. It was tender and deliberate, standing in stark contrast to our usual frantic, passionate exchanges.
I reached around to the nape of her neck, gently deepening the pressure of our kiss. Her soft body pressed flush against mine felt like the ultimate temptation, but I consciously resisted the urge to push things further. I intuitively knew she needed quiet comfort and emotional grounding right now, not raw, lustful satisfaction.
With my free hand, I began to stroke her back softly and rhythmically. A deep, shuddering sigh slipped past her rosy lips.
"Thank you," she murmured softly against my ear.
"Do you want to drink my blood?" I asked, breaking the quiet.
She slightly leaned back, pulling away just enough to search my face in utter bewilderment.
"What?"
"Nothing. It's just that you've never explicitly asked or had it offered so casually before, so I figured you might want some," I answered smoothly.
In her crimson eyes, a complex storm of intense emotions flickered rapidly. From what I could read through her expression, she was deeply, profoundly moved. I couldn't fully fathom why my casual offer carried such massive weight for her, serving as yet another stark reminder of my persistent ignorance regarding deep vampire customs. In the past, she had tasted my blood on multiple chaotic occasions during our intimacies, but offering it as a deliberate gesture of comfort was apparently entirely different.
Nevertheless, without waiting for her hesitation to take root, I tilted my head and brought her lips directly against the side of my neck.
"Go ahead."
She hesitated no longer. She sank her fangs into my flesh with a touch that was soft, careful, and almost reverent. She completely melted into my arms, hugging me tightly as though she never wanted to let go or leave my side.
When she had finally drunk her fill, she slowly raised her head, allowing me to fully see her face. She wore an enraptured, blissed-out expression, her eyes glowing with a rich, profound scarlet hue. A single droplet of my blood escaped the corner of her lip, which she languidly swept away and licked clean with the tip of her tongue.
My attention was instantly captured by her lips, freshly stained scarlet by my essence. I brought my mouth back to hers, and for a suspended moment, we were entirely lost to the rest of the world before our lips parted once more.
Suddenly, our quiet bubble was shattered by a discrete knock at the door. Had an ordinary, unmodified human been standing in our position, it would have been physically impossible to detect the sound, as the impact was nearly imperceptible—it felt as though someone had merely brushed their knuckles against the wood with the lightest possible touch.
Chloe let out a soft, wistful sigh, reluctantly rising from my lap.
"Yes?" she called out clearly.
"Miss Chloe, I am deeply sorry for the interruption, but your invited guests have just arrived," the steady, measured voice of the estate attendant echoed from the hallway outside.
"I understand. Settle them comfortably in the fourth living room—the one facing the rear garden."
"It shall be done, Miss Chloe. I will take my leave." The attendant retreated with absolute silence—or at least, what would have registered as complete silence to anyone lacking enhanced supernatural perception.
"Your guests?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes. It's high time you met my personal strike team," Chloe explained, her tone shifting back to business. "I only ever call upon them when I anticipate an immense volume of blood is about to be spilled. It's an extermination unit."
an extermination team, huh?*
I mentally noted the designation, realizing they would undoubtedly prove invaluable given the heavily fortified, high-threat compound we were preparing to assault in a couple of days. I couldn't help feeling genuinely curious to witness a specialized strike team led directly by Chloe operating at peak efficiency; I figured it would be an absolute marvel of lethal execution to watch.
Chloe slipped away to take a quick, refreshing shower before we left the guest quarters to rendezvous with her operatives. When we reached the heavy polished doors leading into the designated living room, I stepped ahead, pushed the panel open, and held it steady for Chloe to step through before following her inside.
What greeted our entrance was a curious assortment of five individuals lounging haphazardly across the high-end sofas. Only two of them bothered to stand up the moment we crossed the threshold.
The two women who rose immediately dropped to one knee, bowing their heads in deep, respectful greeting toward Chloe. They both sported identical chin-length blond hair and looked eerily, flawlessly identical, save for one distinct detail: the woman on the left possessed striking emerald-green eyes, while her counterpart on the right had piercing blue ones. The moment I swept them with a subtle pulse of my Willpower, the familiar energetic signature they emitted instantly betrayed their true nature. Shifters.
As for the remaining three occupants scattered around the room, they each radiated an undeniable aura of eccentricity. One of the men reclining lazily across the center couch was exceptionally tall—freakishly so, easily clearing the two-meter mark—with a deceptively simple face and a chronically dazed expression.
Another man sat perfectly upright at the edge of a leather armchair, dedicating his entire, unblinking focus to cleaning the wide-fuller blade of a massive weapon resting across his knees. It was a double-edged longsword that looked far more suited to a medieval battlefield than a modern supernatural safehouse.
The final guest was a woman whose entire head of hair was stark, brilliant white. Though her facial features retained youthful perfection, her gaze carried the heavy, ancient stillness I had quickly come to associate with high-born vampires.
Chloe swept her crimson gaze across the room before breaking the quiet.
"Stand up, Liye, Vina. I've told you repeatedly that I deeply dislike those rigid formalities between us."
"Yes, Miss Chloe!" the identical blond shifters replied in eerie, synchronized unison, rising smoothly to their feet.
"Hello, Miss Chloe. What has it been—three years since you last called a full muster?" the giant-framed man spoke up, his voice booming jovially.
"Indeed it has, Arum. Thank you for answering the summons on such short notice, as always," Chloe replied warmly, offering the gentle giant a rare, genuine smile. He nodded back with an easy grin.
"What's the target?"
The man cleaning the medieval longsword finally lifted his head to look directly at us. Now that he was facing our direction, I got a clear look at his face: he was strikingly handsome, defined by sharp facial contours and a chiseled jawline. Even a long, jagged scar tracking from the right side of his forehead down across his cheek just below his eye failed to mar his striking looks. His eyes were a cold, murky shade of grey.
"An unknown faction of rogue supernaturals. We don't yet have precise intelligence on their total numbers... so expect heavy resistance and plenty of enemies," Chloe answered evenly, clearly accustomed to the blunt, no-nonsense communication style of her crew members.
"Your Majesty, would you please stop playing your little tricks and reveal yourself already?" Chloe's lips suddenly twitched in slight annoyance.
She turned and addressed an entirely empty corner of the room. I was completely befuddled until I instinctively swept the indicated spot with my Willpower. In my mental eye, a hidden contour suddenly snapped into focus.
The ambient air rippled violently, and the arrogant Fae prince Eric stepped out of spatial concealment.
"Hello, Samsara. How have you been holding up since our last little chat?" he asked smoothly, flashing his trademark, blindingly beautiful smile.
