My observation of the strange new structure looming before our eyes was abruptly broken by Lorn's excited exclamation.
"Impressive construction!" Lorn noted, his eyes tracing the luminous circuitry etched into the architecture. "The glowing lines running across the exterior of the building come from a complex glyph inscription. The structural integrity of this building is likely robust enough to resist even a direct plane bombing."
"One of these intricate lines is what created the semi-real optical illusion of the ordinary factory we saw from the outside before," he continued, analyzing the magical architecture. "Also, there are various other glyph lines that I will need to closely inspect before fully understanding their net effects. This is doubtlessly the handiwork of a deeply powerful, highly skilled magic-user."
"Can we bypass it and enter?" Chloe asked directly, cutting straight to the operational objective. The security alarm had ceased wailing moments ago, and the enemy syndicate was undoubtedly fully aware of our forced intrusion. Every single minute we wasted lingering outside was just additional preparation time handed over to our foes.
"Of course. The glyph lines on the main entrance gate are significantly easier to decipher. They are standard, foundational Open and Close type glyphs. I just need a couple of seconds to work through them."
We followed him forward until we stood directly before the massive, sheer white gate leading into the interior of the cube-like structure.
Lorn raised his hands, shifting his fingers rapidly through various esoteric symbols. A series of glowing glyphs abruptly manifested directly across his skin, their brilliant light shining right through the heavy layers of clothing he wore.
Suddenly, he locked his palms tightly together before pulling them apart with a sharp, tearing motion. The luminous lines running across the surface of the heavy door faltered and blinked erratically, as though desperately struggling to maintain their active magical state before completely winking out of existence.
"Voilà," Lorn murmured, stepping sideways while gesturing toward the heavy entranceway, which was now sliding open smoothly.
A long, descending corridor terminated in a dead-end blank wall, illuminated by discrete light sources seamlessly embedded directly into the sterile white walls.
A collective expression of puzzlement appeared on all of our faces.
From behind the solid wall marking the apparent cul-de-sac ahead, the rapid, hurried sound of approaching footsteps could be distinctly heard. Though the bizarre configuration of the corridor initially made me doubt my own tactical assessment, the nervous twitching of the two shifter tigers' ears confirmed I wasn't hallucinating.
Arum instantly corroborated the read.
"Incoming enemies!" Arum rumbled, his eyes transforming into an abyss composed of pure, starless darkness alongside a solitary, glowing purple moon.
Even before they materialized physically, I caught sight of various ghostly, translucent figures phasing all around us. Naturally, this perception didn't come via my normal human eyesight, but through the heightened domain of my Willpower. When I noted their ethereal presence, I couldn't stop myself from grimacing; their specific spectral abilities were still painfully fresh in my memory from our previous encounters.
Unlike the diverse mix of vampires, shifters, and werewolves we had ruthlessly purged outside, the individuals now materializing inside the corridor were exclusively mages. And simply stating they 'barged' in wouldn't adequately capture what they had just pulled off. Preceding their physical arrival, shimmering spatial ripples fractured across the solid stone wall; following that, they simply phased straight out of the masonry itself, moving like incorporeal phantoms.
I would have naturally mistaken them for ordinary ghosts had their energetic signatures not been overwhelmingly distinct. More specifically, the raw magical frequency they radiated was unmistakable.
A sudden, brilliant flash of insight shot straight through my brain.
This unholy grouping of individuals is almost certainly composed entirely of mages—or at the very least, an overwhelming majority of them. The other auxiliary supernaturals we crossed paths with while investigating them or trying to force our way in must have simply been hired muscle. Even that formidable swordsman from the Aso continent.
The few low-tier mages scattered among those hired goons were never true, initiated members of the core organization. The only ones among our prior opponents who qualified as actual, card-carrying members of the cabal were likely the high-tier mage Chloe personally executed inside Orchid City, alongside the spellcaster who rained lightning down upon us during our recent skirmish.
This realization neatly explains why they were consistently capable of orchestrating such massive, complex arcane maneuvers—like when we were ambushed back in the weapon master's territory, where they smoothly teleported their strike teams in and recalled them the second things went south.
It was, admittedly, a circumstantial assumption lacking concrete paperwork, but every fiber of my being told me it was the unvarnished truth. If anything else lent credence to this hypothesis, it was the wild, glaring disparity in power levels among the individuals we had fought since the inception of our investigation. Some of the syndicate's grunts were shockingly powerful, while others were ridiculously easy to swat down.
Granted, that perceived ease might be relative, seeing as our baseline power scaling sits comfortably above normal limits.
If all true members hailed from the same specialized arcane background, they should have showcased a uniform standard of baseline combat performance, with their designated leaders naturally scaling much higher in potency.
In any case, I'll be in a position to firmly confirm or deny this working hypothesis soon enough, I concluded internally.
These fresh adversaries looked and felt like the absolute real deal, judging by the dense, unstable energy fluctuations rolling off their forms.
"Intruders, give up on your foolishness and repent immediately. Your lives can still be spared," the man positioned at the head of the enemy group announced, his voice dripping with a fanatical, zealous fervor. "If you stubbornly persist in this stupid act of interference against our Master's grand plan, not even your souls will be spared from damnation."
Chloe stepped forward, her posture rigid and unyielding.
"I am Chloe Crimson, and you are committing unpardonable crimes directly on MY sovereign territory," she declared, her voice dropping to a freezing register. "YOU should be the ones to repent and beg for my absolute forgiveness."
Her eyes blazed until they looked like two miniature, furious crimson suns.
The fanatical leader at the forefront shook his head slowly, an action echoed in unison by his subordinates. Although we couldn't clearly decipher his facial expressions beneath the concealing heavy hood, it was agonizingly easy to sense the profound condescension imbued in that gesture—the classic, insufferable demeanor of zealots convinced that everyone else is merely ignorant of a 'higher truth.'
"Well, then. An amicable agreement was clearly never on the table to begin with," Chloe stated, dropping all pretense of diplomacy. She flicked a sharp hand signal toward the tiger twins.
Without a second of hesitation, the shifters instantly pounced forward, fangs bared, hurtling directly toward the cluster of mages.
Their acceleration was mind-bogglingly incredible; the sole visual traces of their motion were blurred streaks of alternating black and white slicing through the air. Yet, our foes remained entirely nonplussed. The lead fanatic who had just been preaching casually raised a single hand. An enormous spear of solid ice materialized straight out of the empty void and launched like a ballistic missile toward the charging twins.
As the crystalline projectile closed the distance, threatening to instantly skewer Liye who was leading the charge, a bizarre spatial anomaly occurred. Liye abruptly halted, letting Vina slide in front to act as a physical shield. But the ice spear simply passed right through Vina's form as though she were made of smoke—yet it never emerged on the opposing side. It quite literally ceased to exist, vanishing mid-trajectory.
Refusing to lose momentum, the twins resumed their assault, with Liye taking the point once more. As she closed the gap, Liye suddenly threw her jaws wide open and let out a concussive, vibrating roar. The air directly in front of her rippled violently, and a duplicate ice spear—identical in every structural detail to the one that had just vanished seconds prior—shot outward from the distortion straight back toward the bewildered opponents.
I was genuinely surprised.
No, to be entirely honest, I was downright shocked. I would have never guessed in a million years that the shifter twins possessed such a specialized, reality-bending defensive or reflective ability.
Judging by the slackened shoulders and widened stances of the cultists, our enemies were just as thoroughly stunned.
Even so, the fanatical leader merely waved a dismissive hand, and the reflected ice spear dissolved into thin air. Seeing the twins now closing to within striking distance, the leader issued a swift command.
"It appears this confrontation is going to prove far more complicated than initially projected. Oh, well. First, let us shift our tactical playfield, shall we?"
Just as the razor-sharp claws of the tigers were mere inches from tearing into their robes, the leader slammed his foot forcefully down against the stone floor.
A brilliant, pulsing ring of light suddenly materialized directly beneath the boots of every single one of us.
"Shit, they're trying to fragment our formation! These are undoubtedly high-tier transference glyphs," Lorn shouted urgently, recognizing the arcane signatures.
I instinctively tried to leap backward out of the glowing circle beneath me, but found my movement entirely locked, as though I were trapped within an invisible, impenetrable physical cylinder. I caught sight of the twins out of the corner of my eye, their forward momentum abruptly halted by the same spatial constraint.
"No matter—they are merely purchasing a brief extension on their inevitable executions. Listen closely, this is my final operational order before the wholesale slaughter begins: show them zero quarter. Total elimination of all combatants," Chloe commanded with a voice so cold it could shatter glass, her piercing gaze locked unblinkingly onto the hooded face of the leader. "And if the opportunity presents itself, prioritize securing live intelligence regarding the individual pulling the strings at the head of this fanatic cult."
Then, a blinding flash of white light consumed our vision.
The exact second my sight cleared and equilibrium returned, my teammates were completely gone, vanishing into the spatial labyrinth exactly as the glyphs had promised.
Assessing my immediate surroundings, I realized I was still deep within the interior of the cube-like structure. I was standing directly before a complex four-way intersection situated within a dizzying maze of identical white corridors.
"Well, time to hunt down some enemies to slaughter," I muttered aloud to myself, taking a random right turn without any particular strategic logic guiding my steps.
After all, it's not like I have a floor plan of the joint.
A few minutes of unbothered strolling later, I found myself facing a heavy, reinforced metal bulkhead door. I raised my hand and casually flicked my wrist; the solid metal buckled, warped, and twisted forcefully under an invisible kinetic wave, popping open a jagged fracture wide enough for me to slip through comfortably.
Stepping across the threshold, I found myself inside a vast, amphitheater-style chamber teeming with dozens of mages uniformly clad in heavy robes patterned with green serpent motifs.
Okay, then. That proved significantly easier than expected.
"Hell—" I started to call out, intending to offer a sarcastic greeting.
Before I could even finish the syllable, I was rudely and aggressively interrupted.
"Death to the unholy intruders!!!!"
A chaotic barrage of overlapping elemental spells—fireballs, jagged lightning arcs, acidic spray, and jagged shards of earth—rained down upon my position simultaneously in response to those words. The resulting concussive explosions were deafening, likely ringing my eardrums and causing temporary hearing damage.
Yet, I remained entirely unscathed. Anticipating hostility, I had simply willed the ambient air molecules directly in front of me to pack together, exponentially increasing local atmospheric density into an invisible, hyper-resistant wall the second I breached the room.
At least my working hypothesis was dead on: every single occupant in this room is indeed a trained mage. Though, I remain profoundly skeptical as to how such a massive, organized gathering of rogue spellcasters could operate entirely under the radar without triggering the Magus Council's notice. Well, I suppose I'll uncover those answers the hard way after I thoroughly ransack this facility.
Still, they are exceptionally unwelcoming hosts. Launching a lethal magical carpet-bombing while someone is actively trying to converse with you is just bad manners. I'm going to have to personally teach these religious fanatics a rigorous, unforgettable lesson regarding basic hospitality.
