Auto convert is a massively destructive feature. The main issue is that it often happens unknowingly. If you have a massive gene database and happen to use excel, it's probably tried to convert gene names to dates. If you notice it happen, then it's all good and you can just undo it. If you don't, you suddenly have a massive issue and need to search for a program that might help you undo it.
