Chapter 1 - Prologue

Prologue — The Fate That Never Returned

There are deaths that leave bodies behind, and there are deaths so complete that even heaven is denied a corpse.

The destruction of the Veyr System was remembered as one of the latter. Seven worlds vanished. A sun was extinguished. Ancient sects, kingdoms, bloodlines, beasts, cities, oceans, and mountains were reduced to drifting ash scattered across a darkness that no longer obeyed the laws that had once governed it. Space remained wounded there for centuries. Light bent strangely. Time moved unevenly. Cultivators who approached the ruins spoke of laws contradicting one another, as though two beings had written different versions of reality across the same piece of existence and neither version had entirely faded.

One of those beings was Zarathiel, Sovereign of Destiny.

Others called it the One Who Knows.

It was not human, nor beast, nor spirit in any sense mankind properly understood. Zarathiel did not merely foresee the future. To it, the future was something already laid bare. Every choice. Every mistake. Every triumph. Every corpse waiting patiently at the end of every possible road. Destiny was not a mystery to Zarathiel.

It was territory.

The only man capable of standing against such a creature was Asterion Ardyn, the Knight of Fate, Sect Head of the Heavenly Flame Sect. A thousand years of cultivation had carried him into the Dao Ascension Realm, where the strongest no longer merely understood the laws of nature. They created laws of their own. Fate answered Asterion because he had made it his Dao. Destiny bent before Zarathiel because destiny had become part of what it was.

No surviving record describes what happened between them.

There were no survivors.

Only the result remained.

The Veyr System disappeared from the heavens.

Zarathiel disappeared with it.

And Asterion Ardyn never came home.

What the elders of the Heavenly Flame Sect eventually learned was worse than death. Asterion had found no prison capable of holding the Sovereign of Destiny. No formation was eternal. No divine artifact could be trusted. No world could contain something that might already know the day its chains would break.

So the Knight of Fate created a seal that could not be opened without first overcoming the price used to forge it.

He burned his cultivation.

He burned his life.

And finally, he burned his soul.

Asterion Ardyn ceased to exist so completely that there would be no reincarnation, no wandering spirit, no fragment waiting within the cycle of samsara.

His soul became the final chain.

And Zarathiel was sealed within his son, Caelan Ardyn.

The Heavenly Flame Sect mourned its Sect Head.

The cultivation world mourned the Knight of Fate.

No one yet understood that the greater problem was not that the Sovereign of Destiny had survived.

It was that, inside the body of a child, the One Who Knows was still watching.
