(Liam's POV)
The sound of laughter and chatter filled the air as Linna and I finished our celebratory dinner. The gleam of candlelight danced across her eyes, illuminating the joy on her face. We had talked about everything—from school memories to future plans—and yet, beneath the joyous surface, a quiet unease tugged at me, nagging at the edges of my mind.
As we sipped on our after-dinner coffee, Linna leaned forward, her chin resting in her hands, a smirk playing on her lips. "You know," she began, her eyes sparkling with excitement, "this feels just right. Our graduation, our celebration… and, well, it's time for us to talk about what comes next, right?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying to sound casual, even though my heartbeat quickened slightly. The warmth of her gaze and the eager anticipation in her voice filled me with equal parts happiness and apprehension.
"The promise we made!" she exclaimed, her enthusiasm spilling over. "Remember? Once we graduated, we'd start talking about getting married? That promise has been in our hearts for a while now."
Suddenly, that promise hung between us like a living thing, a reminder of the dreams we had shared. I felt a wave of warmth wash over me at the thought. I reached across the table, taking her hand in mine. "Yeah, I remember," I replied, trying to inject the right amount of excitement into my voice.
A smile lit up her face, and it was infectious. "I'm so happy we're finally here! Can you believe it?" she asked, her eyes shining bright with hope and enthusiasm. "We made it through school, all the late nights studying, the exams, and now we get to move forward into our lives. Together."
"Together," I echoed, and for a fleeting moment, I was swept up in her excitement. My heart swelled at the thought of sharing a life with her, but that nagging sense of something being off didn't fade. In the back of my mind, I couldn't shake the worry I still felt about Aaron. It felt like a shadow looming over my joy.
"What dreams do you have now that we're officially graduates?" Linna asked, leaning in closer, her voice lowering as if sharing a secret.
"Well, for starters," I said, trying to keep the tone light, "I'd love to finally get started on the gaming company we talked about. We always believed we could make something epic." I chuckled, trying to draw upon that nostalgic feeling to bolster my enthusiasm.
"Yes! And maybe have our wedding games too!" she added, her grin widening. "Just think about it—what if we combined our ideas? Video games for our wedding theme? It would be the ultimate celebration!"
I couldn't help but laugh at her enthusiasm. "That would be quite the event. I'm sure everyone would love to be part of a gaming-themed wedding."
"Can you imagine? All our friends in cosplay, battling it out with foam swords! It would be legendary!"
The more we joked and laughed, the more I felt the heaviness in my heart push to the background. I shared in her excitement, and for those moments, I allowed myself to dream about the future we were laying out together.
"And you know," she continued, her expression shifting to a more serious note, "I can't wait to start planning our lives. It's not just about marriage; it's about everything that comes after—where we'll live, our careers, maybe starting a family…"
My heart fluttered at the thought, but as she spoke, I felt the walls of my joy close in a bit. I envisioned our future together, bright and full of promise, yet I still had an unsettling tug at my core—thoughts of Aaron alone, battling whatever it was that had pulled him away from the celebration and me.
"Linna," I began, hesitant as I sought to balance honesty and duty as her partner. "I'm just—"
Before I could finish, she interrupted, her excitement overtaking the moment, "And remember that old castle? You know, the one where we used to hide when we skipped classes? I can totally see us taking our engagement photos there! It's perfect, right?"
I let out a soft chuckle despite the lingering heaviness. "Yeah, it would be special. A nod to our past."
Linna's eyes sparkled again. "Exactly! It will be like coming full circle. We can show the world we built something beautiful together from those humble beginnings."
"True," I agreed, but the worry inside me flickered back up. "Linna… what if—"
"I just can't wait to start this next chapter!" she said, completely unaware of the turmoil swirling in my heart. "It feels like everything is falling into place."
And in her joy, I felt a spark of hope ignite within me too, but it clashed with my unease. She leaned in closer, a look of sincerity etching her features, making it hard to voice my concerns.
"Liam, I finally feel like we're exactly where we're meant to be. Just us. Together. I love you," she said softly.
Her words wrapped around me like a warm hug, but just as I was about to respond, what felt like a barrier between my heart and mind widened once more. What about Aaron? The thought flared back to life, a reminder of the void left in my gut.
"I love you too," I replied, sincerity behind my words, but just as the words left my mouth, the weight of unspoken fears loomed.
As our conversation turned back to wedding plans, I threw myself into Linna's enthusiasm and optimism, savoring every moment. She was a light, and in her presence, that unease began to quiet again, if only for a moment. But the shadows of my concerns never fully faded.
And as we discussed colors, venues, and the dream wedding we could have, I couldn't shake the feeling that something important was simmering beneath the surface, just waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.
For that night, I made a choice: to accept the beauty of the moment while holding onto the uncertainty of what lay ahead. Perhaps in the coming days, I could resolve the anxiety and confusion swirling in my heart—and while Linna and I dreamed of a shared life, somewhere in the background, I knew I had to find Aaron and understand what had happened. After all, a future built on love is also built on being there for the ones we care about.
