I nodded, unsure of how to respond. A wave of guilt washed over me. Stella was right.
Whenever thoughts of intimacy crossed my mind, it was her face that appeared. Yet, once the moment had passed, so too did the thoughts of her. That painful truth was impossible to deny.
The more I thought about it, the more confused I became. Did I truly love her? Or had I simply grown accustomed to having her in my life?
Perhaps, I told myself, love would come with time. Perhaps my feelings would deepen if I gave them the chance. One thing, however, was beyond question.
Stella never made me doubt her desire or her commitment to us. She was always present, always willing to share herself with me, never distant or indifferent. She met my affection with enthusiasm and never made me feel unwanted.
