There are no gods in this world, but when enough people believe, they become gods.
Deities arise from the faith of the masses, and are equally bound by that faith. It's a simple causal contract: the more powerful the Divine Power, the greater the cost. You get what you give, otherwise you suffer backlash, and the resentment of the masses is not so easy to bear.
Even the most wicked gods dare not massively devour the souls of their followers; it's a well-known taboo among deities, and those who ignored it have long since perished.
However, there are exceptions to everything. If followers willingly sacrifice themselves to the deity they believe in, surrendering their self, there will be no backlash.
And the Lord of Lightning intends to take advantage of this.
He no longer plans to wait.
