Chapter 9 - Land of Waves Mission

The mission distribution center was unusually quiet for a place that always smelled like ink, old paper, and tired patience.

Hiruzen Sarutobi sat behind the desk, pipe in hand, while Iruka stood beside him holding the mission scrolls. Team 7 waited in front—still damp from their last assignment.

A missing cat.

A chase through rooftops.

A mission that felt more like humiliation than progress.

Sasuke stood still, eyes half-lowered, watching the scrolls instead of the people.

He had already moved past that level of work mentally.

Naruto, however, was not.

"We're done with that stuff!" Naruto leaned forward, voice echoing slightly in the wooden hall. "Give us a C-rank mission! I'm a real ninja now!"

Iruka started to speak—

Hiruzen raised a hand.

Silence returned instantly.

The Hokage's gaze moved slowly across the three of them, pausing briefly on Sasuke, then Naruto.

"…Very well."

A scroll was placed down.

Land of Waves — Bridge Escort Mission

The room felt different the moment the words were spoken. Not louder. Heavier.

A man stepped forward.

Rough clothing. Alcohol on his breath. Eyes that didn't trust anyone in the room.

"Tazuna," he said bluntly. "I'm the bridge builder. And I'll be honest with you—I expect you'll either die on the way there… or quit halfway."

No apology.

Just truth.

Naruto bristled immediately.

Sakura hesitated.

Sasuke only observed the man's posture, the way his shoulders stayed tight even while acting careless.

Fear disguised as arrogance.

Hiruzen watched them carefully.

No one backed down.

The mission was accepted.

The next morning, Konoha's gates opened with the usual noise of departure—guards shifting posts, wind brushing through trees just outside the village barrier.

Sasuke carried light supplies.

Most of what he needed was already stored.

He didn't overpack but optimized.

A small seal scroll in his pouch held prepared food and emergency tools.

Chakra suppressed slightly below visible threshold—controlled, steady. Not to hide power, but to avoid unnecessary attention spikes.

The night before leaving for the Land of Waves was quiet.

Not peaceful—just predictable.

Sasuke had sat in his room with the window half-open. Cold air slipped through the gap, carrying the distant sound of Konoha's night life—faint voices, footsteps on stone, the soft pulse of a village that had no idea what direction tomorrow was already pointed toward.

He didn't need to "prepare."

He already knew what was coming - Zabuza, Haku, Gato and his mercenaries. The bridge. The mist. The timing of every escalation.

The only variable left was whether he would arrive ready enough to control the outcome instead of reacting to it.

He opened the system without any hesitation as he was saving up for exactly this kind of day.

Sasuke didn't distribute points broadly.

He didn't need general improvement. He needed specific counters.

Zabuza wasn't a technical problem. He was a suppression problem—fog, pressure, area denial, forcing hesitation.

Haku wasn't raw power. He was speed disguised as inevitability.

Right now, his skill levels were like this -

Ninjutsu

Transformation Jutsu — Level 2 (6 / 10 EXP)

Clone Jutsu — Level 2 (8 / 10 EXP)

Substitution Jutsu — Level 2 (7 / 10 EXP)

Fire Release — Level 2 (3 / 10 EXP)

Rasengan — Level 3 (74 / 100 EXP)

Taijutsu

Boxing Technique — Level 3 (28 / 100 EXP)

Leg Technique — Level 3 (21 / 100 EXP)

Movement Technique — Level 3 (67 / 100 EXP)

Genjutsu

Illusion Application — Level 2 (7 / 10 EXP)

Special Skills

Chakra Control — Level 4 (438 / 1000 EXP)

Sharingan Mastery — Level 3 (100 / 100 EXP)(Mangekyo locked)

Hand Seal Speed — Level 3 (45 / 100 EXP)

Shuriken Technique — Level 3 (81 / 100 EXP)

Sasuke scanned the updated system once more.

He wasn't preparing for uncertainty. He was compressing a future he already knew into a controllable equation.

The system closed.

Outside, Konoha remained unchanged.

Inside, the version of tomorrow he remembered had already been rewritten once.

Naruto was loud enough to compensate for both of them.

Sakura stayed alert, but uncertain while Kakashi was late as expected.

ROAD TO THE LAND OF WAVES

The forest outside Konoha was dense, layered with overlapping sound—wind through leaves, distant bird calls, and the constant crunch of gravel underfoot.

Sasuke walked slightly behind the group.

Not out of distance.

Out of positioning.

He was reading the environment.

Movement patterns.

Chakra traces in the air.

Something wrong lingered near the road before the ambush even happened.

Then— two bodies erupted from a water puddle that shouldn't have been there.

Chunin-level chakra compression.

Execution fast. But predictable.

Kakashi resolved it in seconds after giving Sasuke and Naruto some real world experience.

The chain binding snapped tight around the attackers instead.

Sasuke was prepared but he still felt the cruelty of this world.

He logged the interaction mentally.

Combat Observation — EXP gained (small increase)

AFTERMATH — TRUTH OF THE MISSION

Tazuna spoke afterward.

The bridge, Gato, The economic control of the island.

The real reason behind the mission.

Naruto reacted loudly. Sakura hesitated again.

Sasuke simply adjusted to his already known understanding of the mission structure.

This was no longer escort work. It was territorial conflict disguised as protection duty.

Kakashi noticed Sasuke's silence. But said nothing.

ARRIVAL — LAND OF WAVES

The island was damp, cold, and overcast. Fog clung to the ground even during daytime, muting colors and sound.

...

Wooden homes leaned slightly from age and salt exposure. The air smelled like wet stone and exhaustion.

Tazuna's house was small.

Kakashi rested due to chakra strain from the earlier encounter.

Sasuke did not rest. Instead, he deployed three shadow clones.

One mapped surrounding terrain.

One monitored movement routes toward the bridge.

One integrated into the local market using transformation—observing supply flow and control points.

A system inside a system.

The island wasn't poor.

It was controlled.

He also corrected minor instability in civilian routines using indirect interference—small, almost invisible improvements in food distribution efficiency.

Not mercy.

Information shaping.

NIGHT — CONFIRMATION

Kakashi woke later.

His tone changed immediately.

Zabuza had survived.

The earlier battle was not over.

Naruto reacted with excitement.

Sakura reacted with fear.

Sasuke reacted with confirmation.

Everything was proceeding according to layered expectation.

TRAINING DIVISION

Next day.

Kakashi trained Naruto in tree walking.

Sasuke did not participate directly.

Naruto's learning curve was unstable but fast—burst progress, high error, rapid correction.

Sakura focused on chakra control.

Sasuke's clone assisted her indirectly.

Basic medical chakra flow was introduced through controlled demonstration.

Minor wound stabilization.

Nothing advanced.

Just structure.

Sakura improved quickly, without questioning source.

Sasuke noted:

Genjutsu resistance (Sakura) increasing naturally due to chakra awareness training.

INTERLUDE — RASENGAN INSTRUCTION

Later.

Forest clearing.

Naruto was curious, loud, impatient.

Sasuke watched him carefully.

Then introduced the concept of Rasengan.

Not the full technique.

Just structure.

Rotation. Compression. Stabilization.

Naruto reacted exac
