Chapter 169: What the Wolves Remember

Largash's POV,
(Flashback)
A familiar sharp wolf howl came in with the wind, sharp enough to cut through the distance, and I was already turning Zena, my wolf in that direction before the second note finished.
"That's Haji's wolf," Nuku said, and the seven riders behind her fell in without hesitation as they followed behind me immediately.
We had been running a border sweep two ridges over when the sound reached us, it was not a hunting signal, but, the one pattern every rider in Blackmoon understood from their wolves, the one we all knew without needing to think about it deeply.
'Help. All of you. Now.'
I pushed Zena hard along the ridge line, the others falling into a loose spearhead behind me, all riders cutting through undergrowth at a pace that would have been reckless on any other day.
