Chapter 112 - The Road Takes

Chapter 112 — The Road Takes

Brook knew something was wrong before he saw it.

The forest had gone silent.

He stopped.

Sera took two more steps before realizing he wasn't beside her.

"What?"

Brook didn't answer.

His hand rested on his sword.

Ahead of them, the path continued between the trees.

The red leaves were gone.

Not fallen.

Gone.

Every branch above them was bare.

Sera slowly turned.

"The road changed."

Brook looked behind them.

The path they had followed was no longer there.

Only forest.

Sera stared.

"That's not good."

"No."

She looked at him.

"You really know how to make people feel better."

Brook ignored her.

Death stood beside him.

Brook watched the Source carefully.

"What?"

Death looked toward the trees.

Something is missing.

Brook frowned.

"What?"

Death didn't answer.

Brook activated the Source fully.

Lifelines appeared.

Trees.

Animals.

Small creatures beneath the earth.

Sera.

Brook.

Then—

nothing.

A gap.

Brook narrowed his eyes.

"What is that?"

Sera followed his gaze.

"What?"

"There should be something there."

She looked between the trees.

Brook stepped forward.

Sera immediately grabbed his arm.

"Brook."

He stopped.

"What?"

She pointed.

A word was carved into the trunk ahead of them.

RETURN.

Brook stared.

Sera walked closer.

"No."

Brook moved with her.

"I wasn't asking."

Sera gave him a look.

"I know."

They approached the tree.

The word had been carved deeply into the bark.

But beneath it—

another word was forming.

Slowly.

TOO LATE.

Sera stopped.

Brook looked around.

"That's encouraging."

"Brook."

"What?"

"Stop joking."

"I wasn't joking."

That made her pause.

A sound came from deeper in the forest.

Metal.

Henry.

Brook immediately moved.

Sera followed.

"Brook, wait!"

He didn't.

The trees blurred past them.

Brook pushed through a line of branches.

And found—

nothing.

A sword was embedded in the ground.

Henry's sword.

Brook grabbed it.

Sera arrived beside him.

Her face changed.

"Where did that come from?"

Brook looked at the blade.

There was blood.

Not much.

But enough.

Sera's eyes widened.

"Henry."

Brook activated Death.

Lifelines.

He searched.

Nothing.

"Brook?"

"No."

"What?"

"I can't see him."

Sera stared at him.

"Maybe he's inside the palace."

Brook's grip tightened.

"No."

He could feel something else.

Henry had been alive.

A lifeline should exist.

Even from a distance.

Unless—

Brook pushed the thought away.

Sera looked at him.

"Tell me."

Brook shook his head.

"Not yet."

The forest moved.

Brook turned.

The trees behind them had shifted.

The path was gone.

Sera whispered:

"It's trapping us."

Brook looked at the words appearing across the trunks.

FORWARD.

LEFT.

STOP.

RUN.

Sera stared.

"They're all giving different commands."

"Which one is right?"

Sera slowly shook her head.

"None."

Brook looked at her.

Sera pointed toward the nearest word.

"The road doesn't want us to follow it."

"Then what?"

She took a breath.

"It wants to see if we can choose."

Brook looked at the trees.

"That's a stupid test."

Sera smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Then the forest shook.

Both of them froze.

A low sound rolled through the trees.

Not a roar.

A breath.

Brook stepped in front of Sera.

Lucifer stirred.

Not excited.

Alert.

Something is close.

Brook whispered:

"I know."

Sera heard him.

"Who are you talking to?"

"Lucifer."

She stared.

"That's not comforting."

"He's not being comforting."

Lucifer laughed.

Brook's expression tightened.

Sera noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

A branch snapped.

Something stepped between the trees.

Brook raised his sword.

Sera moved back.

The figure wore Henry's face.

Brook didn't hesitate.

He activated Death.

No lifeline.

Brook stepped forward.

"Not him."

The creature smiled.

It wore Henry perfectly.

"Brook."

Brook pointed his sword.

"Try again."

The false Henry tilted his head.

"He's alive."

Sera stepped forward.

Brook put out his arm.

"No."

The creature smiled.

"You should listen."

Brook's eyes hardened.

"Why?"

"Because you have a choice."

Sera frowned.

"The Vardø."

The creature looked at her.

"You know my name."

Brook glanced at her.

Sera continued.

"Borrowed Face."

The creature smiled.

"A better name than most humans gave us."

Brook tightened his grip.

"Where's Henry?"

The Vardø looked down at Henry's sword.

"You saw the blood."

Brook didn't move.

"You didn't answer."

The Vardø looked at him.

"Neither did you."

Brook's expression darkened.

"Don't play games."

The creature smiled.

"Then stop walking on a road."

The trees began changing again.

The Vardø stepped backward.

Its body shifted.

Henry's face disappeared.

Another appeared.

Crowley.

Then Hades.

Then—

Brook.

Sera stepped back.

Two Brooks stood before her.

One breathing.

One smiling.

The false Brook looked at Sera.

"Tell him."

Sera frowned.

"What?"

"Tell him what you're afraid of."

Brook looked at her.

The real Brook said nothing.

The false Brook continued.

"Tell him you don't trust him."

Sera's expression changed.

Brook turned toward her.

The Vardø smiled.

"Tell him."

Sera stared at Brook.

Then the false Brook.

"No."

The creature tilted its head.

"No?"

"No."

Sera stepped forward.

"Because whatever I think of him is none of your business."

The Vardø's smile disappeared.

Sera pointed at it.

"You don't get to wear someone's face and demand their truth."

The creature stared.

Brook noticed something.

The forest had become quiet again.

Sera had made a choice.

The road had stopped shifting.

Brook looked toward her.

"You figured something out."

Sera nodded.

"The road isn't giving commands."

Brook looked at the words.

"What is it doing?"

Sera stared at the Vardø.

"Creating temptations."

The creature's face twisted.

Brook understood.

The words weren't instructions.

They were opportunities.

RUN.

STOP.

LEFT.

FORWARD.

Every choice could lead somewhere.

But the road wanted to see what they would sacrifice.

The Vardø began laughing.

"You learn quickly."

Sera's face hardened.

"Where is Henry?"

The creature looked at her.

"Still asking the wrong question."

Brook moved.

The Vardø vanished between the trees.

Brook chased.

Sera shouted.

"Brook!"

Too late.

Brook burst through the trees—

and stopped.

The forest ended.

Ahead was a cliff.

The land dropped into darkness.

Far below—

something moved.

Brook stared.

Death appeared beside him.

There.

Brook looked down.

Lifelines.

Hundreds.

No.

Thousands.

They were beneath the earth.

Moving through darkness.

Sera arrived beside him.

"What did you find?"

Brook pointed.

"People."

She looked down.

She couldn't see the lifelines.

"Where?"

"Below."

The Vardø's voice came from behind them.

"The ones the road took."

Brook turned.

The creature stood several metres away.

Not wearing a familiar face.

Its skin shifted constantly.

Its mouth was too wide.

Its eyes weren't human.

Sera whispered:

"That's its real form."

The Vardø smiled.

"As close as you'll ever see."

Brook raised his sword.

"People."

The creature nodded.

"Travellers."

"Alive?"

The creature's expression became impossible to read.

"Some."

Brook's voice hardened.

"Where's Henry?"

The Vardø pointed downward.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Sera grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

Brook looked at her.

"He's down there."

"We don't know that."

The creature smiled.

"One of you does."

Sera stared at it.

The creature continued.

"One of you can see what death leaves behind."

Brook activated Death.

The lifelines below became clearer.

He searched.

One.

Two.

Dozens.

Then—

Henry.

Brook's breathing stopped.

The lifeline was faint.

But alive.

Brook moved toward the edge.

Sera stepped in front of him.

"No."

"Move."

"No."

"He's alive."

"I heard you."

Brook stared at her.

"Then move."

Sera didn't.

"Brook, this is what it wants."

Henry's lifeline flickered.

Brook looked down.

"He's dying."

The Vardø smiled.

Sera's voice became desperate.

"And if you jump, we don't know what happens!"

Brook looked at her.

"Then what do you want me to do?"

The question silenced her.

For a second.

She had no answer.

Brook stepped around her.

Then the word appeared.

In the air.

Between him and the cliff.

CHOOSE.

Sera looked at it.

Brook looked down.

Henry's lifeline.

Alive.

Fading.

The road.

The city.

The Maker.

Everything waiting behind them.

Lucifer whispered:

Go.

Brook froze.

Michael appeared.

Think.

Lucifer turned.

He's dying.

And this may be a trap.

Everything is a trap.

Brook clenched his jaw.

For the first time in a long time—

his Sources were arguing openly.

Death simply watched.

Brook looked at Death.

"What do you think?"

Death looked toward Henry's lifeline.

It ends.

Brook's expression hardened.

Sera whispered:

"Brook."

He looked at her.

Death continued.

Unless you change the path.

Brook stared at the cliff.

A choice.

Finally—

a real one.

If he jumped, he might save Henry.

He might also abandon Sera and walk directly into the Road's trap.

If he stayed—

Henry's lifeline would end.

Brook looked at Sera.

She already knew.

"Go."

Brook stared at her.

"What?"

Sera stepped back.

"Go save him."

"No."

Her expression hardened.

"Brook."

"I'm not leaving you."

Sera looked at the words floating above the cliff.

Then at the Vardø.

"That's not what this choice is."

Brook frowned.

"What?"

She pointed at the Vardø.

"It's waiting for you to choose between us."

The creature smiled.

Sera continued.

"Don't."

Brook looked at the darkness below.

Henry's lifeline flickered again.

Sera grabbed Brook's shoulder.

"Trust me."

Brook looked at her.

The same words she had spoken before.

This time—

he didn't argue.

Brook nodded.

Then stepped off the cliff.

Sera watched him disappear into the darkness.

The Vardø turned toward her.

Its mouth widened.

"You let him go."

Sera looked at it.

"No."

The words CHOOSE disappeared.

Sera stepped toward the creature.

"I chose."

The Vardø stopped smiling.

Sera raised her hand.

A word appeared on the air.

She had never written one herself before.

Her eyes widened.

The word formed.

STAY.

The Vardø looked down.

Its feet wouldn't move.

Sera stared at her own hand.

The word remained.

The creature struggled.

"What did you do?"

Sera smiled.

"Figured it out."

Brook fell.

Wind tore past him.

The darkness swallowed everything.

Then Michael moved.

Brook didn't fly.

He couldn't.

But space bent.

Brook vanished.

And reappeared closer to the wall.

His hand slammed against stone.

He teleported again.

Closer.

Again.

Again.

His body hit a narrow ledge.

Brook rolled.

Pain shot through his shoulder.

He stood.

Henry's lifeline was close.

Brook ran.

Sera stood alone.

The Vardø struggled against the word.

STAY.

Cracks spread across the air.

Sera's legs trembled.

Holding the word was difficult.

The Vardø smiled.

"You don't understand."

Sera gritted her teeth.

"What?"

"I wanted him to leave."

Sera's expression changed.

The creature's body began shifting.

The word weakened.

The Vardø smiled wider.

"Now you're alone."

Sera's hand shook.

Then another word appeared beside STAY.

She hadn't made it.

HELP.

Sera froze.

A third word appeared.

Far away.

COMING.

The forest began shaking.

The Vardø looked around.

For the first time—

it looked afraid.

Sera whispered:

"Brook?"

But the lifelines beneath the earth weren't moving toward her.

Something else was.

Something much larger.

The trees began bending.

The Vardø's true face turned toward the darkness.

It whispered:

"No."

Sera looked at it.

"What?"

The creature backed away.

"The road found you."

A massive shadow moved between the trees.

Not fast.

Not violent.

Just approaching.

Sera stared.

The Vardø broke free.

It ran.

Sera looked at the words.

HELP.

COMING.

The forest went dark.

Then—

a voice spoke behind her.

Not from the trees.

Not from the road.

A voice directly beside her ear.

"Found you."

Sera turned.

And the world disappeared.
