Chapter 159 — The Man Who Remembered
Sera stopped walking.
Crowley took two more steps before realizing she was no longer beside him.
He turned.
The corridor behind them was empty.
Stone walls.
Broken lamps.
The distant sound of water dripping somewhere beneath the underground city.
But Sera wasn't looking behind them.
She was staring ahead.
Crowley followed her eyes.
At the end of the corridor stood a door.
Old.
Metal.
Clean.
Too clean.
Everything around it had been destroyed by time.
The walls were cracked.
The floor had collapsed in places.
But the door remained untouched.
Crowley's expression hardened.
Sera's hand moved toward her weapon.
"You know this place?"
Crowley looked at the door.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then—
"No."
Sera looked at him.
Crowley's jaw tightened.
"But I remember being afraid of it."
The words settled heavily between them.
Sera looked back at the door.
"That's enough for me."
Crowley moved.
Sera immediately grabbed his arm.
"Wait."
Crowley looked at her.
"What?"
"You said you don't remember."
"I don't."
"So why are you walking toward it?"
Crowley looked back at the door.
His expression was distant.
"Because apparently the part of me that forgot is still here."
Sera released him.
Crowley reached the door first.
His hand hovered above the metal.
Then stopped.
A memory struck him.
Screaming.
A room.
Blood running beneath a chair.
A man standing beside it.
Elias.
Younger.
Crowley remembered his face.
Not completely.
But enough.
Elias looked toward someone outside the memory.
And smiled.
"How long have you been alive?"
Crowley couldn't answer.
Elias leaned closer.
"Long enough to forget?"
The memory shattered.
Crowley pulled his hand away.
Sera noticed.
"What did you see?"
Crowley looked at her.
"Elias."
Sera's eyes hardened.
Crowley placed his hand on the door.
This time—
he pushed.
The door opened.
The room beyond was enormous.
And completely wrong.
The underground world had been old.
Decayed.
Destroyed.
But this room looked alive.
Machines still operated along the walls.
Glass containers stood in rows.
Inside them—
black fluid moved.
Sera stopped.
Crowley did too.
Ectoplasm.
Hundreds of containers.
Maybe more.
Some were empty.
Some contained nothing but black fluid.
Others—
Sera looked closer.
Shapes.
Human shapes.
Her stomach turned.
Crowley's expression became unreadable.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"You took your time."
Sera moved instantly.
Her weapon came up.
Crowley stepped in front of her.
Elias walked into the light.
He looked exactly as Henry had described him.
Calm.
Almost ordinary.
That was worse than if he had looked like a monster.
His eyes moved to Sera.
Then Crowley.
Then back to Sera.
"I expected Henry."
Sera's grip tightened.
"You're going to be disappointed."
Elias smiled.
"I have been disappointed before."
Crowley stepped forward.
"You know me."
Elias's eyes shifted.
A faint smile appeared.
"Yes."
Crowley felt something cold move through him.
"From where?"
Elias tilted his head.
"You really don't remember."
Sera glanced toward Crowley.
Crowley didn't look away from Elias.
"Answer me."
Elias laughed quietly.
"You have spent so long alive that even your anger has begun disappearing."
Crowley's face changed.
Elias continued.
"You used to remember everything."
A flash.
Fire.
Crowley standing beside a burning building.
Someone screaming his name.
Another flash.
Elias.
Younger.
Standing beside him.
Crowley stepped backward.
Sera immediately noticed.
"Crowley?"
Elias smiled.
"There it is."
Crowley touched his head.
Another memory.
A younger Crowley.
Standing in a room.
Elias sat across from him.
Neither looked afraid.
Elias smiled.
"Do you remember the first thing you ever lost?"
Crowley frowned.
"What?"
"Your mother?"
The younger Crowley went still.
Elias smiled wider.
"No."
He leaned forward.
"Your name."
Crowley returned.
His hand was shaking.
Sera stepped closer.
"Don't listen to him."
Elias looked at her.
"Why?"
Sera's eyes narrowed.
"Because I know what he does."
Elias smiled.
"Do you?"
Sera stepped forward.
Crowley grabbed her wrist.
"Sera."
She looked back.
Crowley's expression was serious.
"Don't let him separate us."
Sera nodded.
Elias watched them.
Then sighed.
"Fine."
The room changed.
Every container shattered.
Sera's eyes widened.
Black fluid poured across the floor.
Crowley pulled her back.
The Ectoplasm moved.
Not randomly.
It crawled toward them.
Sera fired.
The first blast tore through the black mass.
It closed again.
Crowley drew his weapon.
"Stay close."
The Ectoplasm reached them.
Crowley struck first.
His weapon cut through the black fluid.
The creature split.
Then wrapped around his arm.
Crowley pulled away.
Sera attacked.
Her strike severed the fluid from him.
Crowley stumbled backward.
Elias watched.
Interested.
"Still fighting."
Sera moved toward him.
Elias lifted one hand.
The floor exploded beneath her.
Sera jumped backward.
Black tendrils erupted from the ground.
She cut through the first.
The second wrapped around her ankle.
Crowley appeared beside her.
He pulled.
The tendril snapped.
Sera landed.
"Thanks."
Crowley looked toward Elias.
"Don't mention it."
Sera almost smiled.
Then another tendril struck.
Crowley moved before it reached her.
He blocked.
The impact threw him backward.
Sera attacked the Ectoplasm.
Her weapon cut through it.
Crowley hit the ground.
Elias watched him.
"You still do that."
Crowley stood.
"What?"
"Protect people."
Crowley frowned.
Elias smiled.
"I wondered if you would remember."
Crowley charged.
Elias didn't move.
Crowley's weapon swung.
Elias stepped aside.
Crowley turned.
Elias was already behind him.
A hand touched Crowley's back.
Crowley disappeared.
Not teleportation.
A memory.
A battlefield.
Crowley stood surrounded by bodies.
He looked younger.
Someone beside him was laughing.
Crowley turned.
Elias.
Older than before.
But not old.
Crowley looked at him.
"You shouldn't be here."
Elias smiled.
"Neither should you."
Crowley looked around.
"Where are we?"
Elias's smile widened.
"That depends."
Crowley stepped away.
Elias continued.
"Do you remember how you got here?"
Crowley went still.
Crowley returned to reality.
Sera caught him before he fell.
"Crowley!"
Crowley grabbed her arm.
His eyes were wide.
"He did something."
Sera looked toward Elias.
"What?"
Crowley shook his head.
"I don't know."
Elias smiled.
"You asked me."
Crowley stood.
"You took them."
Elias's expression didn't change.
"What?"
"My memories."
Sera looked between them.
Elias sighed.
"No."
Crowley's hand tightened.
"You're lying."
Elias smiled.
"You lost them."
Crowley stopped.
Elias stepped forward.
"I only helped you understand that you had."
The black fluid moved around his feet.
Crowley remembered another thing.
Not a complete memory.
A feeling.
Elias had always been fascinated by him.
Not because Crowley was powerful.
Because Crowley forgot.
Crowley whispered:
"You studied me."
Elias smiled.
"Yes."
Sera's expression hardened.
"You used him."
Elias looked at her.
"I learned from him."
Crowley took another step.
Elias continued.
"You lived long enough to prove something I had suspected."
Crowley's jaw tightened.
Elias smiled.
"Memory dies."
The room went quiet.
"Even when the body doesn't."
Sera's eyes narrowed.
Elias looked toward the Ectoplasm.
"So I found another way."
Crowley understood.
The Ectoplasm.
Pain.
Memory.
Elias had seen Crowley forgetting centuries.
He had seen an immortal man lose the people he loved because time eventually erased them.
And Elias had decided forgetting was the enemy.
Crowley whispered:
"You made suffering permanent."
Elias smiled.
"Yes."
Sera moved.
Crowley didn't stop her.
She crossed the room faster than Elias expected.
Her weapon struck.
Elias blocked.
Sera turned.
Another strike.
Elias moved.
She attacked again.
Again.
Again.
There was no hesitation.
No fear.
Elias's calm expression finally changed.
Sera drove him backward.
Crowley watched.
Elias raised his hand.
Ectoplasm erupted.
Crowley moved.
He reached Sera first.
The black mass struck his shoulder.
Crowley hit the ground.
Sera screamed his name.
Elias attacked her.
Crowley grabbed the Ectoplasm.
The black fluid climbed his arm.
Memories entered him.
Crowley froze.
Sera turned.
"CROWLEY!"
He saw them.
Thousands.
Victims.
Children.
People screaming.
People begging.
Henry.
Sera.
Everyone Elias had touched.
Crowley screamed.
The Ectoplasm climbed toward his neck.
Elias watched.
"Now you remember."
Crowley fell to his knees.
Sera attacked.
Her weapon struck the fluid.
Crowley was freed.
He collapsed.
Sera stood between him and Elias.
Elias smiled.
"You're protecting him."
Sera's breathing was heavy.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Sera looked at Crowley.
Then back at Elias.
"Because he came back."
Elias tilted his head.
"From where?"
Sera's eyes hardened.
"From you."
She charged.
The fight changed.
Elias stopped playing.
The Ectoplasm flooded the room.
Sera cut through it.
Crowley forced himself back to his feet.
His mind was breaking beneath the memories.
Not his.
Everyone else's.
Elias saw him standing.
"You can't carry them."
Crowley looked at him.
"Neither can you."
Elias smiled.
Crowley stepped forward.
"I've forgotten thousands."
Elias stopped.
Crowley's expression twisted.
"But I know what it feels like."
Sera looked at him.
Crowley continued.
"I wake up sometimes knowing I lost something."
Another step.
"I don't know what."
The Ectoplasm moved.
Crowley ignored it.
"I don't know who."
Elias's smile faded.
"But I know it mattered."
Crowley raised his weapon.
"And I don't need to remember everything to know you're wrong."
Elias's eyes narrowed.
Sera moved beside Crowley.
The Ectoplasm surrounded them.
Crowley looked at her.
"Ready?"
Sera nodded.
"No."
Crowley smiled faintly.
"Good."
They moved together.
Sera attacked Elias directly.
Crowley attacked the Ectoplasm.
Elias blocked Sera.
Crowley cut through the black tendrils.
Sera drove Elias backward.
Crowley reached the glass containers.
He looked inside.
Faces.
Memories.
Suffering.
Elias realized what he was doing.
"Don't."
Crowley looked back.
For the first time—
Elias sounded afraid.
Crowley smiled.
"You remember them, don't you?"
Elias moved.
Sera intercepted him.
Her weapon struck his side.
Elias stumbled.
Crowley smashed the first container.
Black fluid exploded outward.
A scream filled the room.
Not one voice.
Thousands.
Elias stopped.
"No."
Crowley smashed another.
Sera looked toward him.
Crowley continued.
Elias screamed:
"STOP!"
Crowley froze.
The word echoed.
Elias was no longer calm.
The Ectoplasm moved violently.
The room shook.
Sera turned toward Crowley.
"Crowley!"
The black fluid surged toward him.
Crowley disappeared beneath it.
Sera ran.
"CROWLEY!"
Elias smiled.
Even now.
Sera stopped.
His expression was different.
Broken.
Furious.
But pleased.
"Now."
The Ectoplasm tightened around Crowley.
Sera looked toward him.
Crowley was barely visible beneath the black mass.
Elias stepped toward her.
"You understand."
Sera's eyes filled with anger.
"No."
Elias smiled.
"Then you will."
Sera attacked.
Elias caught her weapon.
The Ectoplasm exploded outward.
Sera was thrown across the room.
Her body struck the floor.
Elias walked toward her.
Slowly.
Sera tried to stand.
Her leg gave out.
Elias stopped above her.
"You survived."
Sera looked up.
Elias smiled.
"But survival is just another memory."
Sera's hand tightened around her weapon.
Elias reached toward her.
Crowley appeared behind him.
Elias froze.
Crowley's arm was covered in black fluid.
But his eyes were clear.
Elias slowly turned.
Crowley was holding a piece of broken glass.
One of the containers.
Elias's expression changed.
Crowley looked at it.
Then at Elias.
"You wanted nobody to forget."
Elias stepped backward.
Crowley smiled.
"I don't think that's possible."
Crowley crushed the glass.
The chamber shook.
Every remaining container cracked.
Elias screamed.
"No!"
Crowley moved.
Sera moved with him.
Crowley struck Elias.
Sera struck immediately after.
Elias staggered.
Crowley grabbed him.
Sera drove him backward.
The three of them crashed through the center of the chamber.
Ectoplasm exploded around them.
And for the first time—
Elias began fighting for his life.
