Chapter 179 - 6 months

Chapter 179 — 6 Months: Henry & Charon

Henry woke to something breathing beside him.

His eyes opened.

The room was dark.

For a few seconds, he didn't move.

Neither did the thing beside the bed.

Then—

"Henry."

Henry closed his eyes.

"You're getting better at that."

Silence.

Henry opened one eye.

A black shape was hanging from the side of his bed.

It had no face.

No real body.

Only shifting Ectoplasm.

Henry stared at it.

The thing stared back.

Or at least Henry assumed it did.

"Henry."

"Yes?"

"Henry."

"Yes."

"Henry."

Henry covered his face with his pillow.

"You know there are other words."

The Ectoplasm became still.

Henry waited.

Then—

"Other."

Henry slowly lowered the pillow.

The Ectoplasm was closer.

Henry sighed.

"Good."

"Good."

"Don't repeat everything I say."

"Everything."

Henry stared.

The Ectoplasm changed shape.

Henry smiled despite himself.

It had been three weeks since it had first spoken.

And Henry was beginning to regret teaching it.

Elias was dead.

Henry had repeated those words to himself more times than he could count.

Elias was dead.

The person who had created the Ectoplasm.

The person whose memories Henry had seen.

The person who had used it.

Controlled it.

Forced it to become something that hurt people because that was what Elias wanted.

And now—

Elias was gone.

The Ectoplasm remained.

But something was different.

It no longer moved like a weapon waiting for an order.

It moved when it wanted.

It watched things.

It explored.

It made decisions.

The first time Henry realized it had free will—

he had found it sitting on a chair.

Henry stood in the doorway.

The Ectoplasm had shaped itself into something resembling a person.

Small.

Featureless.

Its arms rested against the armrests.

Henry stared.

The Ectoplasm stared at the window.

"What are you doing?"

It slowly turned toward him.

Nothing.

Henry waited.

Then it raised one arm.

Pointed at the chair.

Henry frowned.

"You like it?"

The Ectoplasm nodded.

Henry stared.

"You sat down because you wanted to?"

Another nod.

Henry slowly sat across from it.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Henry smiled.

"That's new."

The Ectoplasm pointed toward itself.

"New."

Henry nodded.

"Yeah."

The Ectoplasm looked toward the window again.

Henry watched it.

For the first time—

he didn't see Elias's creation.

He saw something trying to understand what it was.

The first months were difficult.

Henry had to learn what the Ectoplasm could do.

More importantly—

he had to learn what it wanted to do.

Those were different things.

Henry stood outside the shelter.

The Ectoplasm rested on his shoulder.

It moved slowly.

Almost like smoke.

"Okay."

Henry looked ahead.

A tree stood several meters away.

"Try again."

The Ectoplasm moved.

It stretched from Henry's shoulder.

Across the air.

Toward the tree.

Henry watched.

The black substance wrapped around the trunk.

Then—

became an axe.

Henry blinked.

The axe fell.

The Ectoplasm returned.

Henry stared at it.

"Did you just…"

The Ectoplasm shifted.

"Again."

Henry smiled.

"Yeah."

The next attempt became a spear.

Then a shield.

Then a hand.

Then—

a small version of Henry.

Henry stared.

The miniature figure raised both hands.

Henry slowly shook his head.

"You're showing off."

The Ectoplasm returned to his shoulder.

Henry smiled.

"Definitely showing off."

By the second month—

the Ectoplasm began appearing more often.

Not just when Henry needed it.

It would crawl from his shoulder.

Move across his head.

And stare at people.

Most people hated that.

Henry thought it was funny.

Sera did not.

The first time it appeared behind her—

Sera screamed.

Henry laughed so hard he nearly fell.

The Ectoplasm immediately copied the sound.

"Scream."

Sera pointed at Henry.

"Control your thing."

Henry wiped his eyes.

"He's learning."

The Ectoplasm immediately formed a large mouth.

"SCREAM."

Sera's face changed.

Henry slowly stopped laughing.

"Okay."

The Ectoplasm looked at him.

"Okay?"

"Don't do that again."

It thought about it.

Then nodded.

"Again."

Henry sighed.

Crowley noticed the changes before anyone else.

Of course he did.

He stood across from Henry.

The Ectoplasm rested around Henry's neck.

Crowley watched it.

"It doesn't answer you."

Henry frowned.

"What?"

"You tell it something."

Crowley pointed.

"And sometimes it ignores you."

Henry looked at the Ectoplasm.

"Do you ignore me?"

The Ectoplasm became still.

Crowley smiled.

Henry looked back at him.

"Shut up."

Crowley continued.

"It doesn't have to obey anymore."

Henry went silent.

The Ectoplasm moved slightly.

Crowley's expression became serious.

"Elias is dead."

Henry looked toward the ground.

Crowley continued.

"Whatever connection controlled it died with him."

Henry looked back at the Ectoplasm.

"So what?"

Crowley stared at him.

"So it's free."

Henry remained silent.

Crowley walked away.

But Henry stayed outside.

The Ectoplasm rested on his shoulder.

Free.

Henry repeated the word quietly.

The Ectoplasm looked toward him.

"Free."

Henry smiled.

"Yeah."

That night—

Henry couldn't sleep.

The Ectoplasm noticed.

It moved across the bed.

Henry stared at the ceiling.

"Do you remember him?"

The Ectoplasm stopped.

Henry waited.

"Elias."

Silence.

Then—

the Ectoplasm moved.

Henry's room changed.

Not physically.

The Ectoplasm stretched across the walls.

Shapes appeared.

Memories.

Henry immediately sat up.

"No."

The Ectoplasm stopped.

Henry's breathing became heavy.

For a moment—

he saw Elias again.

Not really.

But enough.

The memories he had experienced when the Ectoplasm possessed him.

The things Elias had done.

The people he had hurt.

Henry looked toward the creature.

"I don't need to see that."

The Ectoplasm became still.

Henry's voice softened.

"You don't either."

The darkness slowly returned to Henry's shoulder.

Henry stared at it.

Something touched his hand.

A small black finger.

Henry looked down.

The Ectoplasm had formed a hand.

Henry closed his fingers around it.

"Elias is gone."

The Ectoplasm didn't move.

Henry continued.

"He can't tell you what to be anymore."

Silence.

Then—

"What?"

Henry looked down.

The Ectoplasm was staring at him.

Henry understood.

"What do you want to be?"

The creature waited.

Henry smiled slightly.

"Anything."

It took another month for the Ectoplasm to answer.

Henry had almost forgotten the question.

They were sitting outside.

Rain fell against the roof.

Henry was eating.

The Ectoplasm rested on top of his head.

Henry was used to it now.

Then—

"Name."

Henry stopped eating.

"What?"

The Ectoplasm moved down in front of him.

"Name."

Henry stared.

"You want a name?"

The Ectoplasm nodded.

Henry smiled.

"Okay."

He leaned back.

"What do you want?"

The creature became still.

Henry waited.

Minutes passed.

Then—

"Charon."

Henry frowned.

"Charon?"

The Ectoplasm nodded.

"Why?"

Silence.

Henry smiled.

"You don't know?"

The creature looked offended.

As offended as a faceless black substance could look.

Henry laughed.

"Okay."

He held out his hand.

"Charon."

The Ectoplasm wrapped around it.

Henry smiled.

"Nice to meet you."

Charon repeated:

"Meet you."

Henry shook his head.

"You're still working on it."

By the fifth month—

Charon had become dangerous.

Henry knew that.

Everyone knew that.

It could form almost anything.

Weapons.

Shields.

Hands.

Spikes.

Wings.

Entire extra limbs.

Sometimes Henry didn't even need to move.

Charon would react first.

A training sword flew toward Henry.

Charon became a shield.

Another came from behind.

Charon formed an arm.

Blocked it.

Henry stared.

"I didn't even see that."

Charon returned to his shoulder.

"Slow."

Henry looked at it.

"Excuse me?"

"Slow."

Henry narrowed his eyes.

"You're getting rude."

"Rude."

Henry sighed.

But Charon had one weakness.

One fear.

Brook.

Henry learned that by accident.

Someone mentioned his name.

That's all.

Brook.

Charon disappeared.

Henry froze.

"Charon?"

Nothing.

Henry touched his shoulder.

"Charon?"

The Ectoplasm slowly appeared behind him.

It had become smaller.

Henry stared.

"What happened?"

Charon didn't answer.

Henry waited.

"Brook."

The Ectoplasm immediately moved behind Henry's head.

Henry's expression changed.

"Are you scared of him?"

Silence.

Henry turned his head.

Charon wouldn't look at him.

Henry thought about the fight.

Brook.

Lost.

Unconscious now.

The blood.

The violence.

The moment Henry had understood that his friend wasn't himself.

Henry remembered shouting.

He remembered trying to reach him.

And he remembered something else.

The promise.

You won't let me disappear.

Henry closed his eyes.

Brook had almost disappeared.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Henry looked toward Charon.

"Yeah."

The Ectoplasm remained hidden.

Henry's voice softened.

"I was scared too."

Charon slowly appeared.

"Brook."

Henry nodded.

"Brook."

"Danger."

Henry didn't answer.

Charon repeated it.

"Danger."

Henry looked toward the distance.

"Sometimes."

Charon became quiet.

Henry placed his hand against his shoulder.

"But he's still Brook."

Charon didn't answer.

Henry smiled slightly.

"I think."

The Ectoplasm slowly wrapped around his arm.

Henry looked at it.

"I know."

He didn't sound convinced either.

During the sixth month—

Henry began bringing Charon outside.

Not to train.

Not always.

Just to exist.

Charon saw things.

Rain.

Birds.

Trees.

Fire.

Henry taught him names.

"Tree."

"Tree."

"Bird."

"Bird."

"Fire."

Charon watched the flames.

Henry noticed.

"Don't."

Charon looked at him.

"Don't?"

"Don't touch it."

Charon extended a finger.

"Charon."

Henry sighed.

"Okay. Fair."

Charon touched the fire.

The flames vanished.

Henry stared.

Charon looked back at him.

Henry slowly stood.

"What did you just do?"

Charon formed a small mouth.

"Charon."

Henry pointed.

"That's not an explanation."

Charon disappeared.

Henry shook his head.

"You're impossible."

The message arrived three days later.

Brook had moved.

Henry froze.

The person delivering the information barely finished speaking before Henry ran.

Charon followed.

They entered the room.

Brook was still unconscious.

Nothing had changed.

Henry stopped beside the bed.

He stared at his friend.

Charon stopped behind him.

Brook groaned.

Henry immediately looked up.

"Brook?"

Nothing.

A cut appeared along Brook's arm.

Charon moved.

Henry grabbed it.

"Wait."

The cut disappeared.

Then another appeared.

Charon pulled away.

Henry looked toward it.

"What?"

Charon was shaking.

"Brook."

Henry looked back.

Brook groaned again.

Charon moved farther away.

"Danger."

Henry stared at Brook.

Then at Charon.

Brook's body was reacting to something.

Something they couldn't see.

Somewhere inside his mind—

Brook was fighting.

Henry didn't know against who.

But he knew one thing.

Charon was afraid.

Henry looked at his friend.

Then placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Come back."

Brook didn't respond.

Henry lowered his head.

"Please."

Charon watched.

Henry remained beside Brook.

Hours passed.

Then days.

Then—

Brook finally woke.

Henry stared at him.

Brook's eyes opened.

Charon immediately disappeared behind Henry.

Brook noticed.

His expression changed.

"What is that?"

Henry looked back.

Charon slowly appeared.

Black Ectoplasm moved across Henry's shoulder.

Brook stared.

Henry smiled.

"A lot happened."

Brook looked at him.

"Apparently."

Henry placed a hand against the Ectoplasm.

"He has a name now."

Brook looked toward Charon.

Charon immediately pulled back.

Brook raised an eyebrow.

Henry sighed.

"He's still scared of you."

Brook stared.

Charon whispered:

"Danger."

Brook looked at Henry.

"Seriously?"

Henry tried not to laugh.

"I've been telling him you're not always dangerous."

Charon immediately answered.

"Always."

Henry looked at him.

"Hey."

Brook stared at the Ectoplasm.

Charon stared back.

Neither moved.

Then Brook slowly leaned back.

"I don't blame him."

Henry's smile disappeared.

Charon remained hidden.

Brook looked toward the ceiling.

His expression changed.

Something was wrong.

Henry noticed.

"What?"

Brook didn't answer.

He was listening.

To something inside his own head.

Then—

Silence.

Brook looked back at Henry.

"Nothing."

Henry frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Brook shook his head.

"Nothing."

Charon watched Brook.

Still afraid.

Henry looked between them.

Six months had changed everything.

Brook had slept.

Henry had grown.

And Charon—

Charon had become someone.

Not Elias's weapon.

Not a possession.

Not a thing.

A name.

A voice.

A choice.

Henry looked at him.

"Charon."

The Ectoplasm looked toward him.

"Henry."

Henry smiled.

For the first time—

Charon hadn't simply repeated a word.

He had answered.

And somewhere beyond the walls—

the world continued moving.

Waiting for Brook to catch up.
