CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
THE THINGS THAT FOLLOWED THEM
Ezra stepped through the doorway first.
The priest followed him.
Mathew remained on the porch.
For a moment, he simply watched the two men disappear into the darkness of his house.
The priest had barely crossed the threshold before he reached into the leather case beneath his arm and pulled out a small bottle of holy water.
Mathew stared at it.
Something about seeing it made the situation feel more real.
More serious.
He glanced at Penelope.
She was still standing beside him.
Neither of them moved.
Inside, Ezra stopped near the hallway.
The priest looked back.
"Are you coming?"
Mathew frowned.
He looked at his house.
His house.
His family had been driven out of it in the middle of the night.
His son had been injured.
His daughters had been terrified.
His wife had looked helpless.
And now another man—priest or not—was walking through his home as though he had somehow become responsible for what happened there.
