With his father piercing his thoughts in a single sentence, Linden Hawthorne lowered his gaze slightly, staring at the ashtray on the coffee table, and didn't answer right away.
This son was raised entirely by Eddy Hawthorne himself; there was no reaction that could escape his eyes.
Just one look, and he knew he'd hit the mark.
He sighed. "Linden, in this lifetime, I've only really learned two things."
Linden lifted his eyes to him, waiting for him to go on.
"First, when it comes to feelings, fate makes its own arrangements. If it's yours, then it's yours. If it's not, you can't force it. When we're young and reckless, we always refuse to believe in fate, thinking that as long as we work hard enough, there's nothing we can't get."
Everyone has had that thought; he was no exception.
