Chapter 63 - SO WHAT NEXT?

Kyrah woke up smiling.

For a few seconds, she lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling of her bedroom as the events of the previous evening slowly returned to her. Seojun's confession. His hands wrapped around hers. His voice, steady and warm, promising that he could wait for her for as long as she needed.

"Oh, my goodness."

She was in love.

The realization should have frightened her more than it did. Perhaps it would have frightened her if she had not already spent months watching Seojun demonstrate the kind of man he was. He had been there through her difficult days, her pregnancy worries, her moments of insecurity, and even the occasions when she had pushed him away because accepting his kindness felt more dangerous than rejecting it.

He had never demanded that she become someone else to deserve him.

Still, there was a difference between knowing that a man cared about you and allowing yourself to believe that he would continue caring when life became complicated.

Kyrah lowered her hands and glanced towards the bedside clock.

Then she reached for her phone.

There was a message waiting for her.

Seojun: Good morning, Tripper. Did you sleep well?

Kyrah stared at the words.

Tripper Seojun hadn'tcalled her that in a while.

She pressed her lips together, trying to contain the ridiculous smile spreading across her face.

Kyrah: I did. Good morning.

She hesitated, then added another message.

Kyrah: Is it too early to say I miss you?

The moment she sent it, she regretted everything.

"Oh, Kyrah. Why?"

She tossed her phone onto the bed as though it had personally betrayed her. Unfortunately, it rang almost immediately.

Seojun was calling.

She answered, attempting to sound composed. "Hello?"

"Good morning again."

His voice was so warm that she immediately forgot the sensible greeting she had prepared.

"Good morning."

There was a brief pause.

"Are you smiling?" he asked.

"No."

"Really?"

"Why would I be smiling?"

"Because you told me you missed me, and now you're trying to pretend you didn't."

Kyrah covered her face with one hand. "I knew I shouldn't have sent that message."

"I'm glad you did."

"You are enjoying this too much."

"Perhaps." She could hear the smile in his voice. "But I have a confession of my own."

"What?"

"I miss you too."

Her heart performed an embarrassing little leap.

She turned onto her side, one hand resting instinctively over her pregnant belly. "You saw me yesterday."

"I remember."

"And we spoke for hours."

"I remember that too."

"So how can you miss me already?"

"Kyrah, I spent months wanting to tell you how I felt. Now that you know, I'm discovering that I want to tell you again every time I see you."

She went silent.

Not because she had nothing to say, but because she had too much.

"You're going to make me cry again," she whispered.

"I'll bring tissues next time."

She burst into laughter.

It was such an ordinary exchange, so different from the painful conversations she had once associated with love, that it caught her off guard. No accusations. No bargaining. No demand that she prove how much she cared.

Just two people, happy to hear each other's voices.

"Seojun?"

"Yes, Tripper?"

She was beginning to suspect that he intended to use that endearment until she became accustomed to it.

"I don't want you to think that because I said I love you, everything is suddenly easy for me."

His expression might have changed on the other end of the call, but his voice remained gentle.

"I don't think that."

"I mean it. Sometimes, I might get scared. Sometimes, I might wonder whether I'm making a mistake. Not because of you, necessarily, but because of everything that happened before you."

"I understand."

"And I'm pregnant. There will be days when I'm exhausted, emotional, uncomfortable, or worried about the baby. I won't always be the most romantic girlfriend."

"That is a very serious problem," he replied.

She frowned. "What?"

"I was hoping to date a woman who would be cheerful, perfectly rested, and available for romantic dinners every evening."

"Seojun!"

He laughed, and she shook her head, smiling.

"I'm teasing you," he said. "Listen to me, Kyrah. I didn't fall in love with an imaginary version of you. I fell in love with the woman I know. The woman who works hard, who cares about the people around her, who can be stubborn when she believes something matters, and who sometimes tries to carry everything herself."

She swallowed.

"I don't expect you to wake up tomorrow without a single fear. I only want you to let me know when those fears become too heavy for you to carry alone."

Kyrah closed her eyes.

There it was again. That simple, devastating kindness.

"Okay," she whispered.

"Okay?"

"I'll try."

"That's all I'm asking."

They remained on the phone a little longer, discussing breakfast, the baby's next appointment, and whether Seojun would be allowed to bring her something to eat later. Kyrah insisted that she could manage her own meals. Seojun pointed out that he had not offered to replace her ability to feed herself; he had merely asked whether she would like company.

She finally agreed.

When the call ended, Kyrah sat up slowly, still smiling.

Her life had not become perfect overnight. Jinyoung's history had not disappeared, and the uncertainty surrounding his company had not magically resolved itself. She was still carrying a child, still navigating her future, and still learning how to accept a love that did not come with conditions she had to satisfy.

But something had changed.

For the first time in a long time, she was not merely imagining a future in which she would be happy.

She was beginning to live one.

---

Linda arrived that afternoon with food, a handbag full of unnecessary items, and the expression of a woman who had come to investigate a serious matter.

Kyrah opened the door and immediately stepped aside.

"Come in."

Linda walked past her, put the food on the dining table, and turned around.

"All right."

Kyrah blinked. "All right, what?"

"Tell me everything."

"There is nothing to tell."

Linda stared at her.

Kyrah stared back.

Then Linda pointed at her face. "You are glowing."

"I'm not."

"You are smiling at the wall."

"I am not smiling at the wall."

"You were smiling at the door before I knocked. I watched you through the peephole."

Kyrah's mouth fell open. "You were spying on me?" And wait a minute did you hop off an airplane and went straight for food? Linda ignored.

Stop changing the topic.

Linda waved her off and pulled out a chair. "Sit down. I need to know how this happened. When did you decide that you were finally going to stop torturing that poor man?"

"I wasn't torturing him."

"You were making him work harder than a man applying for a permanent residency permit."

Kyrah burst out laughing, and Linda's expression softened.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Linda reached across the table and took Kyrah's hand.

"I'm happy for you," she said.

The teasing had disappeared from her voice.

Kyrah looked down at their joined hands. "I'm happy too."

"But?"

Kyrah sighed. "You know me too well."

"Unfortunately. It is one of the burdens of our friendship."

Kyrah smiled faintly. "I'm afraid of getting it wrong. What if I let myself believe in this, and something happens? What if I hurt him because I'm still carrying things I haven't completely healed from?"

Linda listened without interrupting.

"What if one day he looks at me and realizes that loving me is more complicated than he expected?" Kyrah continued. "I'm not the woman he would have chosen if life had gone differently. I'm pregnant with another man's child. I have history. I have baggage."

Linda's fingers tightened around hers.

"Kyrah, listen to me. You are not a damaged parcel somebody has to accept because there are no other options available."

Kyrah looked up.

"You are a woman who has lived through things that would have broken other people. You have built a career, created something valuable, and continued to show up for yourself and your baby even when the people who should have supported you failed you."

Linda paused.

"And Seojun knows that. He has seen you. Not some imaginary version of you without a past, without a baby, or without responsibilities. He knows who you are, and he chose you anyway."

Kyrah's eyes filled.

"Please don't cry," Linda said quickly. "I have already used up my emotional allowance for the week."

That made Kyrah laugh through her tears.

Linda sighed and reached for a tissue.

"Honestly, the two of you are going to give me wrinkles."

Kyrah dabbed her eyes. "You are impossible."

"And yet, you love me."

"Unfortunately."

"Good. Now tell me exactly what he said when he confessed."

Kyrah laughed again.

For the next hour, Linda listened to every detail, occasionally interrupting to gasp, demand clarification, or declare that Seojun had officially ruined ordinary men for her.

When Kyrah finally finished, Linda leaned back in her chair.

"That man is serious about you."

Kyrah looked at her hands, her smile returning.

"I know."

"No, I mean seriously serious. He isn't playing at being your hero. He is making room for you in his life."

Kyrah's hand moved to her belly.

"And Peppa," she whispered.

Linda's expression softened. "And Peppa."

The baby's name had become something tender between them, a small reminder of the future Kyrah was carrying. She did not know exactly how everything would unfold, but she knew that she wanted her son to grow up surrounded by love, honesty, and people who would never make him feel responsible for the circumstances of his birth.

She wanted him to know that family was not simply a matter of blood.

It was also a matter of choice.

---

Across Hong Kong, Seojun sat in his office reviewing the latest documents concerning Whoolim Group.

The company's financial situation was more complicated than he had initially expected. Some divisions remained profitable, but poor resource allocation, weakening investor confidence, and several questionable long-term commitments had left the business vulnerable.

He studied the projections, then turned to the proposed recovery plan.

There was potential.

But potential was not enough.

If Jun Chao Group invested, it would be committing substantial capital and accepting a degree of responsibility for Wolim's future. He needed to understand the risks, the assets that could be preserved, and the restructuring required to make the investment worthwhile.

Jinyoung's relationship with Kyrah had nothing to do with those calculations.

At least, that was how Seojun intended to conduct himself.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Kyrah appeared on the screen.

Kyrah: Linda says you have ruined ordinary men for everyone else.

Seojun stared at it before a smile appeared on his face.

Seojun: Should I apologize?

Kyrah: Absolutely not.

Seojun: Then I shall accept the compliment.

Kyrah: You are becoming very confident.

Seojun: I have a girlfriend now. Apparently, this is one of the benefits.

He could almost hear her laughing.

For a few seconds, the documents before him became less urgent. Not unimportant, but less consuming. There was a life beyond the office, a woman who had trusted him with her heart, and a little boy who would soon enter the world.

Seojun wanted to be worthy of the place Kyrah had given him.

That meant loving her properly.

It also meant conducting his business properly, even when the people involved had caused her pain.

He returned to the Whoolim proposal and picked up his pen.

If Jinyoung wanted Jun Chao Group's investment, he would have to demonstrate that the company deserved it. Seojun would neither punish him for his past nor save him out of sentiment.

He would make the decision based on the facts.

And whatever happened, Kyrah would never be asked to pay for it.

For now, she was his girlfriend.

Which was enough to make an ordinary morning feel extraordinary.
