Silas didn't want to talk anymore.
He said wearily, "Mom, I want some peace and quiet."
"Tell me where the property deed is hidden, and I'll let you have your peace," his stepmother coaxed, suppressing her temper.
But Silas refused to tell her, "I don't know."
"Silas Caldwell~~" his stepmother said resentfully, "How can you be so useless? You haven't noticed how long you've been in the hospital? Look, have they come to see you at all? They're so heartless, yet you still want to help them."
Silas sighed, "Mom, if I weren't Dad's son, I wouldn't want a penny from him."
His stepmother suddenly exploded, her hand trembling as she pointed at Silas's nose, her eyes bloodshot, "You useless thing, raising you was a waste! You only remember his kindness. You have to know, if I hadn't taken you in back then, you would have died already!"
Silas was once again shocked, so surprised that he couldn't recover for a long while.
