Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

The panel that unfolded in front of his eyes wasn't quite there the way a physical object was there Chu Yan could see through it to the familiar cracks in his ceiling beam — and yet it was unmistakably real, hanging in the dark in characters made of soft golden light.

[HOST: Chu Yan]

[Age: 18]

[Bloodline: ??? ]

[Cultivation: Qi Gathering, Grade 6]

[Sect: None]

[Contribution Points: 0]

[Titles: None]

[SYSTEM FUNCTIONS UNLOCKED:] — Main Quests — Side Quests — Daily Missions — Sect Management (Locked — requires Sect Founding) — Disciple Recruitment (Locked) — Building Construction (Locked) — Inventory — System Shop (Locked — insufficient Contribution Points) — Lottery (Locked — insufficient Contribution Points) — Achievements — Titles

Chu Yan read it twice, sitting cross-legged on his mat, and felt his grin falter slightly on one particular line.

Bloodline: ???

"Excuse me," he said. "You know my name, my age, my exact cultivation grade, and you can't confirm whose son I am?"

[Correct.]

"That seems like an oversight."

[It is not an oversight.]

[Noted. Recommended action: proceed with Main Quest.]

A new line bloomed beneath the status panel.

[MAIN QUEST 1: The First Step]

Objective: Reach Qi Gathering, Grade 7.

Reward: 50 Contribution Points, 1x Minor Qi Gathering Pill, System Shop unlock (Novice tier).Time Limit: None.

Chu Yan raised an eyebrow at the ceiling, as if the system lived there specifically. "Grade 7. That's it? I was two months from that breakthrough anyway. You've handed a starving man a single grain of rice and called it a banquet."

[The First Step is, by definition, small. Hosts who skip it tend not to survive the second.]

"Ominous."

[Accurate.]

"Fine." He cracked his knuckles, entirely too pleased with the drama of the moment. "Shop. Let's see what ten thousand years of mystery has to offer a man of my obvious talent."

The panel shifted, and four locked headers unfurled beneath a single word — SYSTEM SHOP — each one dimmer than the last.

[Novice Shop — Unlocked]

[Apprentice Shop — Locked: Contribution Points below threshold]

[Elder Shop — Locked: Sect Founding required]

[Ancestral Shop — Locked: ??? ]

He scrolled — or thought at it, which seemed to work the same way — through the Novice tier. It held exactly one item.

[Beginner's Gift Bundle — 1 Contribution Point]Contents randomized. Purchase limit: once per host, ever.

"One item. One purchase. Ever." Chu Yan sat back, folding his arms. "You people really don't make this easy."

[Ease was not part of the design specification.]

"What was part of the design specification?"

[Survival. Growth. Occasionally, mild suffering for pedagogical purposes.]

He barked a short laugh into the dark, startled out of his own performance for a moment. Whatever this thing actually was, it apparently had no interest in flattering him, and something about that — a voice in his head that refused to be impressed by his best material — put him more at ease than a warmer welcome would have.

"I like you," he said. "I don't trust you yet. But I like you."

[Understood. Trust is not required for functionality.]

"Inventory," he said next, testing the word.

The panel folded away and a new one opened — nearly empty.

[INVENTORY: 1/50 slots] — Chu Clan Elder's Token (Sealed) — Cannot be inspected. Unlocks under unknown conditions.

Chu Yan's grin faded, just slightly, at that one. He reached instinctively toward his own chest, though there was nothing physical there to touch.

Chu Clan Elder's Token. Three words that meant nothing to a farm boy from Thunder Village, and yet sat in his chest like a stone dropped into still water.

"What clan," he said quietly, not really expecting an answer this time.

[Query: insufficient trust threshold.]

"You said that already."

[It remains accurate.]

He sat with that for a long while, the bravado cooling into something more careful, until the insects outside quieted toward the deep hours of the night. "Fine," he said finally. "Keep your secrets. I'll earn them out of you eventually — I'm very charming."

[Noted. Charm is not a recognized system currency.]

"We'll see about that."

"Close," he said, and the panel obeyed, folding back into the warmth behind his sternum until his room was only a room again — dark, familiar, and entirely too quiet for a young man who'd just been told, in so many words, that his life wasn't what he'd believed it to be.

He didn't sleep again that night. He lay on his back, staring at the same ceiling beam he'd stared at every night of his life, grinning at the dark despite himself.

Dawn came grey and cool, mist pooling low over the millet fields, and Chu Yan was already awake and dressed by the time the rooster made its first half-hearted attempt at a crow.

He went through his morning cultivation practice exactly as he had every morning for six years — except it didn't feel quite the same. The qi gathering into his dantian felt marginally smoother, like a door swinging easier once its hinges had finally been oiled. He completed three full cycles instead of his usual two, and when he opened his eyes, a notification blinked politely at the corner of his vision.

[Daily Mission generated: Complete morning cultivation cycle. Reward: 2 Contribution Points.][Daily Mission complete. +2 Contribution Points.]

"Two points," Chu Yan said, "for something I already do every morning of my life. You're a generous employer."

[Daily Missions reward consistency, not difficulty. Host is advised: small, repeated effort compounds. Host is also advised that most hosts who complain about this eventually stop training entirely.]

"That was almost an insult."

[Observation, not insult. The distinction matters less than hosts believe.]

He laughed out loud this time, and the sound carried across the yard just as Chu Xue came hurrying out, hair half-braided, one shoe on. "Mother says if you're done waving your sword at nothing, breakfast is getting cold — and if you make her reheat it twice, she's feeding your portion to Old Man Feng's goat."

"It's not sword-waving. It's cultivation. There's a difference."

"There is not." She narrowed her eyes, that particular sharpness only a younger sibling could manage. "You look strange this morning. Strange-happy, actually, which is somehow worse than your usual strange."

"I always look this good."

"You look like you've been talking to yourself in the dark."

"...I have, actually."

"That is not reassuring, brother."

He watched her stomp back toward the house, half-amused, half-aware of the strange new weight sitting behind everything he said now — Chu Clan Elder's Token,Bloodline: sealed — and thought, not for the first time, that his family deserved better than to learn any of it secondhand.

Not yet, he decided. But someday — and when I tell them, it's going to be a very good story.

Breakfast was ordinary. His mother scolded him exactly as promised, though she saved his portion instead of feeding it to the goat. As he rose to help with the day's work, one last notification bloomed at the edge of his vision.

[Main Quest progress: Qi Gathering Grade 6 → Grade 7. Estimated completion at current rate: 34 days. Note: cultivation resource quality in current location is suboptimal.]

Chu Yan paused at the doorway, one hand on the frame, and let himself grin at the morning mist like a man who'd just been let in on a very good secret.

"Thirty-four days," he murmured. "System, I'm about to make you regret ever thinking that number was realistic."

[Noted. Statistically unlikely. Proceeding to observe regardless.]

"That's the spirit."

He went out to help his father with the plow, exactly as he did every ordinary morning of his ordinary life grinning the entire way, because somewhere behind his ribs, ten thousand years of patient silence had just met its match, and it had absolutely no idea what was coming.
