Hanato's Perspective
There was one thing I had learned after chasing the mysterious vandal through the city yesterday.
The paint...
Hadn't been random.
At first glance, anyone would assume it was nothing more than a prank.
Bright colors splashed across school walls.
Graffiti covering hallways.
Windows painted beyond recognition.
Statues defaced.
It looked like the work of an immature delinquent with far too much free time.
But after seeing the culprit with my own eyes...
I knew better.
The way she moved...
The way she escaped...
The way she deliberately stayed just long enough for me to notice before vanishing...
None of it had been accidental.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
Which meant...
The paintings themselves were probably deliberate as well.
Every spray.
Every line.
Every location.
Every color.
There had to be meaning behind them.
I simply hadn't found it yet.
"...The paint hadn't been random."
The words escaped my lips in a quiet whisper as I walked through the second-floor hallway with both hands tucked comfortably inside my pockets.
Students passed by from every direction.
Some hurried toward their next class.
Others chatted loudly with friends.
Everything appeared perfectly ordinary.
But my thoughts remained fixed on yesterday afternoon.
The second conclusion I reached...
Was even more important.
"...The culprit is still around."
She hadn't been caught.
No teacher had mentioned an arrest.
The anonymous tip box inside the cafeteria remained empty.
The principal still looked exhausted.
If the culprit was still at large...
Then there was a very good chance...
She was walking these very hallways alongside the rest of us.
Perhaps...
Only a few meters away.
"...Female..."
I quietly listed everything I remembered.
"...Masked."
"...Different-colored eyes."
"...Fast."
"...Really fast."
Even remembering that chase made me click my tongue in frustration.
I'd been so close.
One more minute...
Maybe even thirty more seconds...
And I might have caught her.
Instead...
She had vanished into the city as though she had dissolved into thin air.
Inside my mind, a familiar voice broke the silence.
Ryuhou:You intend to investigate?
I smiled faintly.
"...Obviously."
The little dragon gave a thoughtful hum.
And your method?
I couldn't help smirking.
"...Simple."
My eyes drifted toward the groups of students moving through the hallway.
"...I'll check everyone."
There was a brief pause.
Everyone?
"...Well..."
I rubbed the back of my neck.
"...Everyone that fits the profile."
Ryuhou sounded unconvinced.
That is an incredibly inefficient strategy.
"...Maybe."
I shrugged.
"But it's better than standing around doing nothing."
The little dragon sighed inside my head.
You certainly inherited your optimism.
"...Thanks."
That was not a compliment.
I laughed quietly.
Midday – Hallway
Lunch break had only just begun.
The corridors buzzed with life.
Students walked toward the cafeteria.
Others gathered around classroom doors.
Some stood beside the windows chatting while eating homemade lunches.
To everyone else...
I looked like an ordinary student taking a leisurely walk.
But in reality...
Every single person I passed became part of my investigation.
Not suspiciously.
Not enough to draw attention.
Just...
Observing.
Carefully.
Systematically.
"...Brown eyes."
I walked past two second-year girls laughing together.
"...Not her."
Another pair approached from the opposite direction.
One had bright pink dyed hair.
The other wore oversized headphones.
"...Too noticeable."
A third group stood beside the stairwell taking selfies.
Colored contact lenses.
Fashionable accessories.
Constant laughter.
"...No."
Ryuhou quietly observed with me.
Eliminate impossible candidates first.
"...Already doing that."
One girl nearly bumped into me while running after her friends.
She apologized repeatedly before hurrying away.
"...Too clumsy."
Another student confidently walked through the hallway while carrying an art portfolio.
For a brief moment...
I considered following her.
Then immediately dismissed the thought.
"...No."
Reason?
"...She wouldn't carry evidence around."
Reasonable.
A few minutes later...
Another girl caught my attention.
Long black hair.
Average height.
Athletic build.
She moved quickly.
Purposefully.
I watched her for several seconds.
Then...
She tripped over her own shoelaces.
"...Definitely not."
Ryuhou chuckled.
Your standards are harsh.
"They need to be."
As I continued walking, my thoughts returned to yesterday.
The masked girl hadn't simply run.
She had anticipated my movements.
Every turn...
Every jump...
Every shortcut.
It felt less like chasing a frightened vandal...
And more like chasing someone who had practiced escaping before.
"...She wasn't trying to be seen."
I muttered thoughtfully.
Ryuhou agreed.
Correct.
"...She stayed visible just long enough..."
"...Then disappeared."
Calculated.
"...Exactly."
She hadn't panicked.
She hadn't stumbled.
She hadn't looked back in fear.
The only emotion I'd sensed...
Had been amusement.
Almost like...
She enjoyed the chase.
"...Which means..."
I turned another corner.
"...She won't make this easy."
Outside Classroom 1-A
Eventually...
My investigation brought me back toward our classroom wing.
The hallway here felt noticeably quieter.
Most students had already gone to lunch.
Only scattered conversations drifted through the open classroom doors.
I slowed my pace.
Without realizing it...
My eyes naturally began scanning everyone inside.
Then...
One student caught my attention.
She sat quietly beside the window.
Sunlight streamed through the glass behind her, illuminating soft strands of purple hair that gently swayed in the breeze coming through the slightly opened window.
Selena.
She rested one elbow lightly against her desk while absentmindedly looking outside.
Unlike everyone else...
She wasn't participating in the conversations around her.
She wasn't gossiping about the vandal.
She wasn't laughing.
She simply...
Watched the sky.
Peacefully.
"...That's Selena."
I spoke almost unconsciously.
Ryuhou answered.
You know her?
"...Not really."
I leaned casually against the classroom doorway.
"...We've spoken once or twice."
"...She's quiet."
"...Keeps to herself."
"...Doesn't cause trouble."
Selena remained completely unaware that I had stopped outside.
Or perhaps...
She simply didn't care.
She looked...
Comfortable with silence.
My gaze naturally drifted upward toward her face.
Then...
Her eyes.
They were calm.
Gentle.
The same soft shade that reminded me of...
"...Hina."
Ryuhou noticed immediately.
You are comparing her to Hina?
"...Yeah."
It wasn't intentional.
But somehow...
The comparison happened automatically.
Both girls shared a similar quietness.
Neither enjoyed unnecessary attention.
Neither spoke loudly.
Neither tried to become the center of every conversation.
Still...
Something felt different.
Very different.
I narrowed my eyes slightly.
"...No."
Ryuhou waited.
Explain.
I continued watching Selena.
She slowly turned another page in the novel resting on her desk before once again gazing outside.
Completely relaxed.
Completely natural.
"...The girl I chased yesterday..."
I recalled those mismatched eyes.
That fearless smile.
That impossible speed.
"...She had presence."
"...Confidence."
"...She wanted me to notice her."
I folded my arms.
"...Almost like she enjoyed being watched."
Selena...
Didn't radiate anything like that.
If anything...
She seemed happiest when nobody paid attention to her at all.
She didn't seek attention.
She avoided it.
She wasn't performing.
She wasn't pretending.
She simply...
Existed quietly.
"...She's different."
Ryuhou gave a thoughtful hum.
Continue.
"...The culprit felt..."
I searched for the right word.
"...Dangerous."
Not because of violence.
Not because of strength.
But because every movement carried purpose.
Every decision seemed calculated.
Selena...
Felt peaceful.
Gentle.
Someone who would rather read a book near a window than chase excitement.
I slowly shook my head.
"...She can't be the culprit."
Ryuhou questioned my certainty.
You are sure?
"...Yeah."
I pushed myself away from the doorway.
"...Wrong personality."
"...Wrong presence."
"...Wrong type."
Without another glance toward Selena...
I slipped my hands back into my pockets and continued walking down the hallway.
"...Next."
Behind me...
The classroom remained as peaceful as ever.
Selena quietly continued reading beside the window.
Completely unaware that, for a brief moment...
She had unknowingly become part of my investigation.
Meanwhile...
Somewhere else within the school grounds...
The real owner of those mismatched eyes watched from the shadows once again.
Hidden.
Patient.
Waiting for the perfect moment to make her next move.
And without realizing it...
I had already stepped one step closer...
To the truth.
Hanato's Perspective
The cafeteria was always the loudest place in the entire school.
The moment I stepped through its double doors, a familiar wave of noise washed over me.
Conversations overlapped with one another.
Students laughed loudly over lunch.
Metal trays clattered against serving counters.
Chairs scraped across the polished floor.
The aroma of curry, bread, fried chicken, and freshly brewed coffee drifted through the crowded room.
It was chaotic.
Ordinary.
Exactly what a school cafeteria should be.
To everyone else...
This was lunchtime.
To me...
It was a hunting ground.
I paused just inside the entrance.
Not long enough to attract attention.
Just long enough to observe.
"...Crowded."
Inside my mind, Ryuhou answered calmly.
"Which makes observation more difficult."
I smiled faintly.
"...Or easier."
"Explain."
"...When everyone is focused on eating..."
I slowly let my gaze sweep across the cafeteria.
"...Nobody notices someone who's watching."
Ryuhou hummed thoughtfully.
"A reasonable point."
Without rushing, I joined the lunch line.
I wasn't hungry.
Not even a little.
But wandering around an empty-handed student during lunch would only attract unnecessary attention.
Better to look natural.
When my turn came, I grabbed a bottled iced tea from the refrigerated shelf.
That was enough.
I had no intention of drinking it.
It was simply...
A disguise.
Bottle in hand, I casually wandered through the cafeteria.
Not too slowly.
Not too quickly.
Just another student searching for somewhere to sit.
Only...
I wasn't looking for a table.
I was looking for someone else.
My eyes carefully examined every corner of the cafeteria.
Groups gathered around tables.
Athletes laughed loudly near the windows.
First-years nervously searched for empty seats.
Members of the art club discussed their newest project.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing suspicious.
"...Not here."
"Continue."
I nodded almost imperceptibly.
A girl with blue hair.
No.
Another wearing gold-colored contact lenses.
Not natural.
Another with short silver hair.
Too short.
Another wearing a baseball cap.
Wrong height.
Wrong build.
One after another...
I quietly eliminated each possibility.
Then...
Something caught my attention.
Near the far exit.
A lone figure stood slightly apart from the crowd.
Not eating.
Not talking.
Simply...
Standing.
Half of her face remained hidden beneath the shadow cast by the doorway.
The hood she wore concealed most of her hair.
At first...
She looked completely ordinary.
Then...
She slightly turned her head.
A single beam of sunlight slipped through the cafeteria windows.
It reflected across her eyes.
Gold.
And violet.
Time seemed to freeze.
"...Found you."
Ryuhou immediately answered.
"Confirmed."
"...Yeah."
There was no mistaking them.
Those eyes.
The same ones that had stared directly into mine yesterday afternoon behind the school.
The same mismatched eyes that had disappeared into the city.
For one brief moment...
Neither of us moved.
Then...
She noticed me.
Her expression couldn't be seen beneath the mask hidden by her hood.
But I saw it.
The subtle tension in her shoulders.
The tiny shift in posture.
She recognized me too.
Without hesitation...
She turned.
And ran.
"...Knew it."
My body reacted before I even had time to think.
The unopened bottle slipped from my fingers.
It landed harmlessly on the nearest empty table with a dull thud.
Several nearby students looked toward me in confusion.
Then...
I sprinted.
"Hey!"
A boy carrying ramen barely managed to avoid colliding with me.
"What are you doing?!"
Ignored.
The mysterious girl darted through the cafeteria exit with astonishing speed.
Not frantic.
Not desperate.
Controlled.
Every movement looked practiced.
"...She's fast."
Ryuhou's voice remained composed.
"As expected."
I burst through the swinging doors only seconds behind her.
The hallway beyond stretched ahead like a long tunnel.
Students walking between classes instinctively stepped aside as she raced past.
She never bumped into anyone.
Never slowed down.
She simply...
Flowed through the crowd.
Like water.
"...Not getting away that easily."
I accelerated.
My footsteps echoed loudly against the polished floor.
One corner.
Then another.
She turned sharply without losing momentum.
I followed immediately.
The distance between us remained frustratingly constant.
"...She's using the crowd."
"She knows this building well."
"...Same difference."
She wasn't randomly choosing directions.
She already knew where she wanted to go.
That alone told me plenty.
For the first time...
She glanced back.
Only once.
Those brilliant mismatched eyes met mine.
There it was again.
That same expression.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Amusement.
Almost...
Playful.
As though this entire chase entertained her.
"...Yeah..."
I couldn't help smiling.
"...You're definitely not some ordinary student."
The moment our eyes met...
She pushed herself even faster.
Without warning, she shoved open the heavy metal door leading into the emergency stairwell.
It slammed loudly behind her.
Bang!
I reached it only a second later.
The echo of rapid footsteps bounced off the concrete walls.
She was climbing.
Upward.
"...The rooftop?"
Ryuhou immediately understood.
"Likely."
"...Good."
I took the stairs two at a time.
My heartbeat pounded in my ears.
Each landing disappeared beneath my feet almost instantly.
Fourth floor.
Fifth floor.
Then...
The final flight.
I could hear her footsteps only a few meters ahead.
Closer.
Closer.
I was actually gaining on her.
The heavy rooftop door burst open.
Bright sunlight flooded the stairwell.
She disappeared through it.
I followed immediately.
A powerful gust of wind greeted me the instant I stepped outside.
The afternoon sky stretched endlessly overhead.
Tokyo spread beneath us in every direction.
Rows of buildings.
Busy streets.
Moving trains.
The entire city shimmered beneath the midday sun.
The rooftop itself was empty.
Except...
For her.
She stood near the center.
Perfectly still.
Waiting.
She wasn't running anymore.
Interesting.
"...You stopped."
I slowly walked forward.
"...That saves me the trouble."
She tilted her head slightly.
The black mask concealed the upper half of her face.
Only those strange eyes remained visible.
Watching me.
Carefully.
Silently.
Then...
She spoke.
"...You're persistent."
Her voice carried easily through the wind.
Light.
Relaxed.
Almost amused.
"...You're suspicious."
She laughed softly.
"...That hurts."
"Not really."
"...Fair enough."
Silence settled between us.
Neither of us moved.
The wind swept across the rooftop, causing loose strands of hair beneath her hood to flutter gently.
Far below...
The sounds of the city became distant background noise.
For several long seconds...
Neither of us broke eye contact.
"...Who are you?"
I finally asked.
She slowly raised one gloved finger.
Then placed it gently against her lips.
"...That's a secret."
"...Figures."
Her shoulders shook ever so slightly.
She was laughing again.
"...You're exactly how I imagined."
I frowned.
"...Meaning?"
"You ask all the obvious questions first."
"...And you avoid answering them."
"Of course."
There wasn't even the slightest hint of guilt in her voice.
Everything she said carried a strange confidence.
As though she already controlled the conversation.
Another quiet breeze drifted across the rooftop.
Then...
She took one small step backward.
"...You're interesting."
"...And you're running again."
Her eyes curved slightly.
"Of course."
Before I could react...
She spun around.
But instead of heading toward the rooftop door...
She sprinted toward the edge.
"...Wait!"
I lunged forward.
She never slowed down.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Then...
She jumped.
My heart nearly stopped.
I rushed to the edge as fast as I could.
Hands gripping the safety railing.
Looking down.
"...What?!"
Nothing.
No body.
No scream.
No impact.
Only the busy street far below.
Cars continued driving.
Pedestrians crossed intersections.
No one looked upward.
No one reacted.
"...She didn't fall."
Ryuhou agreed immediately.
"Impossible."
"...Then where—"
A faint metallic sound echoed somewhere behind me.
Clink.
I spun around instantly.
The rooftop remained completely empty.
No doors opening.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Nothing.
"...She vanished."
"Without leaving even a shadow."
I slowly straightened.
Scanning every inch of the rooftop once more.
Still nothing.
An ordinary person couldn't disappear like that.
Unless...
She had planned another escape route.
I exhaled quietly.
Then...
A smile slowly formed across my face.
"...Now that's interesting."
Only a short distance away...
Hidden safely behind the rooftop water tank of another building...
The masked girl watched silently.
She had never truly disappeared.
She had simply...
Moved.
Fast enough.
Smart enough.
The afternoon sunlight reflected beautifully across her unusual eyes.
Gold.
And violet.
She folded her arms while watching me continue searching the empty rooftop.
"...He's sharp."
Her voice was barely louder than the breeze itself.
"...Much sharper than everyone else."
She tilted her head slightly.
A smile slowly formed beneath her mask.
"...This is going to be fun."
With one graceful step backward...
She disappeared behind the rooftop structure.
By the time another gust of wind swept across the building...
She was already gone.
Vanished once again into the endless maze of Tokyo.
Leaving behind nothing except unanswered questions.
And the growing certainty...
That a new player had quietly entered the game between Light...
And Shadow.
