Chapter 32 - Chapter 32

The silence after the guardian fell lingered longer than expected.

Not tense.

Not threatening.

But—

Heavy.

Like the space itself was recalibrating.

Riser didn't move immediately.

His eyes stayed on where the guardian had collapsed, watching for any sign of movement.

"...It's really down."

Lyra stood a few steps away, her breathing steady but slightly heavier than before.

"...Yeah."

A pause.

Then—

"...But don't relax yet."

Riser let out a quiet breath.

"Wasn't planning to."

Only then did his attention shift.

Toward the center of the room.

The glow was faint.

But unmistakable.

"...That's our target."

Lyra nodded once.

"Looks like it."

They approached carefully.

Not rushing.

Not assuming.

The object rested on a low pedestal.

Simple.

Unremarkable at first glance.

A small crystalline shard.

Translucent.

Faint light pulsing within it.

"...That caused all of this?"

Riser muttered.

Lyra didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze narrowed slightly.

"...It's not just an item."

"Of course it isn't."

The closer they got—

The stronger the sensation became.

Not pressure.

Not danger.

Recognition.

Riser slowed.

"...You feel that?"

Lyra's voice dropped slightly.

"...Yeah."

The system activated again.

[System Notice]Artifact Identified: Fragment Core (Type: Unknown)Resonance Detected with HostCompatibility: PartialWarning: Direct Contact May Trigger Unstable Reaction

Riser stared at the notification.

"...That doesn't sound good."

Lyra crossed her arms slightly.

"It never does."

A brief silence settled between them.

Then—

"...We need to take it."

Lyra's tone was firm.

Riser didn't move.

"...Yeah."

But his gaze stayed on the shard.

Something about it—

Felt—

Familiar.

"...Riser."

Lyra's voice cut in.

Sharper this time.

He blinked once.

"...Yeah."

"...Don't get distracted."

"I'm not."

"You were."

A pause.

Then—

"...Fine."

He exhaled slowly.

"...We grab it and leave."

Lyra nodded.

"Fast."

Riser stepped forward.

Each step felt—

Heavier.

Not physically.

Something else.

The shard's glow flickered slightly.

"...It's reacting," Lyra said.

Riser stopped just short of the pedestal.

The air around the shard felt—

Distorted.

Like something invisible was shifting.

"...Yeah."

He muttered.

"I can see that."

His hand lifted slowly.

Just a few inches away—

The glow intensified.

[System Alert]Resonance IncreasingStability Threshold: UncertainProceed with Caution

Lyra's voice sharpened.

"...Riser."

He didn't respond immediately.

Because now—

He could feel it clearly.

A pulse.

Not from the shard—

From himself.

Matching it.

"...This is new."

"Riser."

This time—

Sharper.

Closer.

He snapped out of it slightly.

"...Yeah."

"...Don't touch it yet."

A pause.

Then—

"...Too late."

His fingers brushed the surface.

Everything changed.

The light surged—

Not outward—

Inward.

Riser's vision blurred.

For a split second—

The room disappeared.

Darkness.

Endless.

Then—

A flicker.

A shape.

Something—

Watching.

"...What—"

The sensation snapped.

Riser staggered slightly.

Back in the room.

The shard dimmed again.

Lyra grabbed his arm.

"...Riser!"

He steadied himself.

"...I'm fine."

"You don't look fine."

"I said I'm fine."

But his voice—

Was quieter.

Focused.

"...What happened?"

Riser stared at the shard.

"...It reacted."

"Obviously."

"...No."

He shook his head slightly.

"...It recognized something."

Lyra's grip tightened slightly.

"...What do you mean?"

Riser exhaled slowly.

"...I don't know."

But that wasn't entirely true.

Something had looked back.

The system flickered again.

[System Update]Partial Synchronization AchievedNew Passive Effect Acquired: Resonance SensitivityWarning: Continued Exposure May Alter Host State

Riser stared at the notification.

"...Alter."

Lyra glanced at it.

Her expression didn't soften.

"...We're taking it."

Riser nodded.

This time—

No hesitation.

He reached forward again—

Gripped the shard—

The glow flared—

Then stabilized.

Silence.

Nothing exploded.

Nothing shifted.

"...That's it?"

Riser muttered.

Lyra didn't relax.

"...No."

Because—

The moment he lifted it—

The room changed.

A low sound echoed.

Deep.

Resonant.

Not from the shard.

From the walls.

From everywhere.

"...Yeah."

Riser exhaled slowly.

"There it is."

Cracks.

Faint at first.

Spreading across the floor.

Up the walls.

The space was reacting.

Lyra stepped back slightly.

"...We triggered something."

"You think?"

"...We need to move."

Riser didn't argue.

"...Agreed."

They turned—

Heading back toward the entrance.

But—

The corridor behind them—

Was gone.

Replaced.

With something darker.

Deeper.

Riser stopped.

"...That's new."

Lyra's voice dropped.

"...This wasn't part of the zone."

The system activated again.

[System Warning]Zone Instability DetectedPathways AlteredNew Threat Emergence Imminent

Riser tightened his grip on the shard.

A faint grin appeared.

"...Of course."

Lyra stepped beside him.

"...This just got worse."

Riser glanced at her.

"...You still in?"

A brief pause.

Then—

"...Yeah."

Her answer was immediate.

Riser smirked.

"...Good."

Because now—

They weren't just retrieving something.

They were trapped inside it.

And whatever had been watching—

Was no longer just watching.
