Chapter 59 - Chapter 59

Unpredictability had a cost.

Riser felt it the moment they stopped.

Not immediately.

Not during the fight.

After.

A subtle pull.

Like something inside him—

Had been stretched.

"…Tch."

Lyra noticed instantly.

"…You feel that?"

"…Yeah."

He flexed his hand slightly.

Nothing visible.

No energy surge.

No system alert.

But—

Something wasn't settling properly.

"…That wasn't just physical strain," she said.

"…No."

Because physical strain—

He understood.

This—

Was different.

A faint instability.

Like his movements—

Hadn't fully returned to baseline.

"…You pushed too far," Lyra said.

"…That was the point."

"…And now you're paying for it."

Riser exhaled slowly.

"…Not yet."

But soon.

He could feel it.

That same subtle disconnect—

He'd felt inside the layer.

Not as strong.

But present.

"…We should stop for now," Lyra said.

"…Yeah."

No argument.

Because pushing further—

Would only make it worse.

They stood in silence for a moment.

Then—

"…We're not alone."

Lyra's voice dropped slightly.

Riser didn't turn.

"…I know."

Because the watchers—

Had changed again.

Not the distant ones.

Closer.

More deliberate.

"…Three," Lyra muttered.

"…Yeah."

Different from before.

Not observing casually.

Not evaluating.

Waiting.

"…That didn't take long," Riser said quietly.

"…No."

Footsteps.

Measured.

Approaching.

The first stepped into view.

"…You're making this difficult."

Riser glanced over.

Seris.

Of course.

"…I try."

She didn't smile.

"…You're disrupting expected patterns."

"…That's the idea."

"…It complicates assessment."

"…Also the idea."

A brief silence.

Then—

"…Unwise."

Riser tilted his head slightly.

"…Why?"

"…Because uncertainty leads to escalation."

"…That sounds like your problem."

"…It becomes yours."

Fair.

But not enough to change approach.

"…Still worth it."

Seris studied him carefully.

Longer this time.

"…You're not trying to win."

"…Depends on what the game is."

"…You're trying to avoid being defined."

That—

Was closer.

Riser smirked faintly.

"…You're catching on."

"…Of course I am."

A pause.

"…That makes you more dangerous."

"…That's also the idea."

Before Seris could respond—

Another voice cut in.

"He's not wrong."

Riser didn't need to turn.

"…You again."

Kael stepped into view.

Relaxed.

But focused.

"…You're getting interesting."

"…You said that already."

"…Now I mean it."

Lyra sighed softly.

"…This is getting crowded."

"…Not yet," Kael said.

His gaze locked onto Riser.

"…But it will."

A brief pause.

"…You're holding back."

Riser raised an eyebrow.

"…Am I?"

"…Yeah."

Kael stepped closer.

"…You're not committing."

"…That's intentional."

"…That's boring."

A faint smirk.

"…Then make it interesting."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Careful."

"…Always."

Tension built.

Not explosive.

But present.

Seris didn't interrupt.

She observed.

Carefully.

Because this—

Was a different kind of test.

Not political.

Not controlled.

Something else.

Then—

"…You're both wrong."

A third voice.

Quieter.

But clear.

Riser turned.

Ilyra.

Of course.

"…That's becoming a habit," he said.

"…You're easy to find."

"…That's not a good thing."

"…No."

She stepped closer.

Not into conflict.

Into observation.

"…He's not holding back."

A pause.

"…He's limiting output."

Silence.

Kael frowned slightly.

"…Explain."

"…He's not stabilizing fully between actions."

Another pause.

"…Which means—"

"…You're carrying instability forward," Seris finished.

Riser didn't react outwardly.

But internally—

That hit.

Because they were right.

"…So?" he said.

"…So it will break," Seris said calmly.

"…Eventually," Ilyra added.

"…Or sooner," Kael said.

Lyra stepped forward slightly.

"…Enough."

The tension shifted.

Because now—

This wasn't just about Riser.

"…He's not collapsing," she continued.

"…Not yet," Seris replied.

"…And not today."

Her tone didn't change.

But her stance did.

Subtle.

Protective.

Riser exhaled quietly.

"…Relax."

Lyra didn't move.

"…They're not wrong."

That—

Stopped her.

Just slightly.

"…You feel it?" she asked.

"…Yeah."

A small pause.

"…Then fix it."

"…Working on it."

Silence settled again.

But now—

It wasn't just tension.

It was understanding.

Because for the first time—

They weren't just evaluating him.

They were analyzing something deeper.

Something—

Unstable.

"…You shouldn't push like that again," Seris said.

"…I will."

"…Then you'll fail."

"…Maybe."

A small smirk.

"…But not in the way you expect."

That—

Caught her attention.

Kael's grin returned.

"…Yeah."

"…Now that's interesting."

Ilyra didn't smile.

But her eyes—

Sharpened.

"…You're changing faster than expected."

"…So I've been told."

A pause.

Then—

They stepped back.

Not retreating.

Not leaving.

Just—

Ending the interaction.

For now.

"…That's new," Lyra muttered.

"…Yeah."

Because they didn't push further.

Didn't escalate.

Didn't test him directly.

Which meant—

They got what they wanted.

Information.

Riser exhaled slowly.

"…That's worse."

"…Much worse," Lyra agreed.

Because now—

They weren't guessing anymore.

They were starting to understand.

And once they understood—

They would act.

The only question was—

How fast.

And whether Riser would be ready when they did.
