Kael received three documents within the same two days, and read them in an order that turned out to matter.

The first was Brekk's report on the depot's hand-hauling, the four figures on the slope, the assessment that the opportunity Mara had described was now real, and Brekk's recommendation not to act on it yet.

The second was Darak's account from the Arch, the sixth Keystone's morning, the four-hour engagement, the decrease.

Kael read it twice, not because the content was complicated, but because it told him something about the shape of things the content alone did not state directly.

The eastern front had become harder. The directing intelligence had responded by pushing somewhere else, and had failed there too, more completely than it had failed anywhere before.

He thought about the western bulge Dhug'mhar had mapped, the one aimed at highland interior territory, the one he had asked Tharuk to think about an improvised response to.
