Chapter 2 - I Like Her

It was the third period of the day and yet I was feeling sleepy already. Nevertheless, I still have to go through this day.

I sit on the farthest seat from the window. Middle, not too close to the teacher and not too far so as to be under the teacher's radar for being unattentive. Just right in the middle, like a side character. A character that exists but not for others to notice.

"... With that our topic is over. Is there anything you don't understand?" the teacher asked as she cleaned the board behind her.

A few raised their hands. She addressed them quickly and finished the class. The next was physical but in this burning heat, and with my laziness taking over my "athletism" I don't feel like I'll be able to move my muscles.

With that mindset, I decided the skip the period.

"Joseph!" I yelled.

"What?" He looked at me with the same set of eyes, stressed eyes with an expressionless face.

"I'm skipping the next period." I proclaimed.

"Why?" He looked at me astounded.

"What do you mean "why" Can't you feel the heat outside?" puzzled I asked him, "Can you go play football or any sport at all in this weather?"

"I'll play basketball, it's indoor so I don't see any problem. If anything it's better since I can relax in the next period and the teacher can't do anything about it. The worst that could happen is she would throw me out of the class and I'll just go to the infirmary." He said while rubbing his nose proudly.

"You are a sick person you know that, right?" I said in disgust.

"I'll take that as a compliment." He said with a wide smile, "Anyway I'll be leaving. What do you want me to say to the PE teacher?"

"Tell him I'm sick or something and won't be able to come to the class," I said.

"Aye aye, sir." With that energetic aura of his, he left the classroom along with a few others. His expression from being emotionless changed into something opposite to it.

...

Soon it was just me and my thought on the bed of the infirmary. And I'm not here just for the sake of skipping a class. I genuinely fell down the stairs while going to the rooftop. Talk about a stroke of bad luck. But I'm thankful it's nothing serious. I hit the corner of my eye, it got swollen up.

"Well, I don't think it did anything to your eye. It should be okay in a couple of days. Make sure you use icing on that place a couple of times after going home. I would have given a pack of ice to you but unfortunately, we are out of ice." with that she left the room.

And something interesting happened. At least for someone like me.

The door opened. A couple of students entered the room. The boy seemed to be in his senior year while the girl looked a year younger than me.

"So what's happening?" The boy asked.

"What do you mean...?" The girl replied ignoring his gaze.

"Huh? Don't play dumb here. I have heard the rumor about you going out with someone from my year. I want to know if you and he are doing something behind my back or not." Although the boy seemed to be calm on the outside, I could feel pressure in his eyes. He looked directly at the girl.

"So you are trusting a bunch of stupid rumors over me? You don't even trust me, do you? " the girl hissed at the boy. Still ignoring his gaze. I don't know what's happening in this situation nor can they see me since I'm behind the curtain. But from the looks of it, the girl sure is hiding something.

"Don't twist the words. You haven't been talking to me lately. Ignoring my calls, not replying to my texts. If anything I should be angry in this situation and not the other way around." I nodded in agreement even though I don't have a single clue who they are.

"Argh! I hate you. I'm leaving!"

*Slam*

A dead silence groomed the room.

"What happened to you?" The medical teacher arrived and looked at the boy's face.

"N-Nothing." He hurriedly left the room. The teacher sighed. Although I heard the conversation I wasn't able to decipher what the heated discussion was about, "These kids and their drama..." The teacher sighed as if she understood the situation completely.

...

It was noon and time for me to leave school at last. But unfortunately, I was caught skipping the class. It seems a few of my "precious" classmates saw me going in the opposite direction and thought I was skipping PE. And our PE teacher also seems to have replaced his brains with muscles. Even after telling him, I was in the infirmary he scolded me enough to make me bleed from my ears.

I was on the bus going home that's when I noticed something mysterious. Not particularly mysterious but more like, more like, I don't know but it made me quite uncomfortable but also pleased at the same time.

I noticed a girl, who seemed to be a year younger than me sitting a couple of seats further than me. Although I wasn't able to see the front profile, her side profile was strong enough to make my heart flutter.

I won't deny the fact that I feel attracted to good-looking girls but this one seems different somehow. I felt attracted to her looks but also a bit different than usual.

During my half-hour ride, I was constantly turning my gaze toward her. It was like a reflex reaction on my part and I knew for sure this isn't right.

And of course, I won't play dumb in this situation. It's for sure that she is my first crush... I think-

I LIKE HER.
