Chapter 11 - The Third Move

In chess, the loudest move was rarely the most dangerous.

A soldier could charge. A general could threaten. A king could command.

But the move that changed the board was often quiet.

A single piece placed where it should not be.

A path closed without warning.

A blade turned back toward the hand that held it.

That was the kind of move Ye Tianxin preferred.

Not because it was honorable.

Because it worked.

"Then let us discuss balance," he said.

The court turned toward him.

Ye Tianxin stepped forward with his fan closed in one hand, his expression mild enough to irritate every guilty conscience in the hall.

Mo Zun watched him carefully.

The other officials did not.

That was their mistake.

One official from the second row sneered. "God of Wealth, this is not a market negotiation."

Ye Tianxin smiled. "Correct. A market has more honest thieves."

The official's face flushed.

Ran looked down, hiding a smile.

Jin Fen whispered, "That was educational."

Jin Qiang nodded solemnly. "Remember it."

Huan Mei did not smile, but the coldness in her eyes eased by a fraction.

Yan stood between them, still feeling the pressure of the Heavenly Pact over her skin. The golden tablets above the court shone brighter than before, each ancient character waiting for a decision to become law.

Ye Tianxin turned his gaze to Mo Zun.

"The court requests supervision over Goddess Yan's reincarnation seal if evidence is not produced before the next full moon."

Mo Zun inclined his head. "For the sake of stability."

"Of course." Ye Tianxin's tone was smooth. "Stability is such a generous word. It hides greed better than most."

A ripple of anger crossed the officials' faces.

Mo Zun did not react. "If you have a proposal, state it."

"I do." Ye Tianxin opened his fan slowly. "If the accusations fail, the court may request temporary supervision according to the disturbance clause. But if the accusations are proven true, then every official who benefited from Goddess Yan's curse must return what was taken."

The court went silent.

Then it exploded.

"Impossible!"

"Absurd!"

"This is extortion!"

"This insults the dignity of the court!"

"There is no precedent!"

Ran sighed. "Their dignity has appeared again. Persistent little thing."

Jin Fen nodded. "Should we give it a seat?"

Yan's mouth almost twitched.

Almost.

Mo Zun raised a hand, and the officials reluctantly quieted.

"What exactly does the God of Wealth mean by return what was taken?"

Ye Tianxin's smile faded.

"Cultivation gained through her suffering. Vitality drawn from the curse. Karmic merit absorbed from the reincarnation cycle. Any authority, blessing, or divine power strengthened by feeding from her pain."

The hall chilled.

Yan felt the words settle inside her.

Feeding from her pain.

Her fingers tightened.

She had heard the accusation before, but hearing it named so clearly made something inside her recoil.

An elderly official struck his staff against the floor.

"Baseless slander! You speak as if the divine court is filled with parasites."

Ye Tianxin looked at him.

"Not filled," he said. "That would be unfair to the furniture."

Jin Qiang barked a laugh.

The elderly official trembled with rage.

Mo Zun's voice cut through the court. "God of Wealth, accusation is not proof."

"Correct," Ye Tianxin said. "Which is why I am not asking for punishment before proof. I am asking for equal consequence after proof."

Mo Zun's eyes narrowed.

Ye Tianxin took another step forward.

"If the court claims Goddess Yan's instability threatens the realms, then the court should welcome a method to stabilize her. If no one here benefited from her curse, no one loses anything."

The silence after that was different.

Sharper.

Yan watched the officials.

Some looked angry.

Some looked offended.

Some looked afraid.

That was the first useful thing she had learned in this court.

Fear was easier to read than dignity.

Official Song Byin rose again, his expression tight.

"The Goddess of Reincarnation's seal is her own burden. Why should ranked officials surrender cultivation because of wild claims?"

Jin Liwei looked at him.

"Because if the claims are true, the cultivation was never yours."

The red seal at his throat glowed faintly.

The court quieted.

Jin Liwei's voice remained low, but every word carried.

"And if any official used that stolen power to harm newborns, children, or unstable cultivators, then returning cultivation will be the least of their punishment."

Song Byin's daughter lowered her eyes for the first time.

Mo Zun said, "God of Death, are you threatening the court?"

Jin Liwei's gaze did not move.

"No. I am informing it of jurisdiction."

Yan looked at him.

Jurisdiction.

The word was cold. Legal. Controlled.

But his eyes were not.

Beneath the restraint, there was fury.

"For crimes involving stolen life force, broken souls, and unlawful interference with death ledgers," Jin Liwei continued, "hell has the right to investigate. If children were refined, death has the right to judge. If souls were prevented from proper reincarnation, Goddess Yan has the right to reclaim authority over them."

The hall became so quiet Yan could hear her own breath.

Then Lu Si Cheng spoke.

"And heaven has the right to execute."

No one moved.

Yan's heart hit painfully against her ribs.

The three authorities stood around the same accusation now.

Heaven.

Death.

Reincarnation.

For the first time, the court's clean robes did not look so clean.
