Chapter 20: Six
The birthday was Cecile's idea.
Not the birthday itself — that was simply a date, the twelfth day of the seventh month, the same as it had always been, the day House Vaelmoor's registry recorded the arrival of one Vivienne Edran Vaelmoor, daughter of the Duke, at approximately four in the morning in a room that had smelled of beeswax candles and something floral she had never quite identified.
Six years, Vivienne thought, lying in bed on the morning of it, looking at the ceiling with the particular stillness of someone taking stock. Six years in this body, in this house, in this life that had started as someone else's second chance and had become, without her fully noticing the moment it happened, simply hers.
She was six years old.
She was also, in some other accounting, thirty-two.
Both things were true. She had stopped finding them difficult to hold simultaneously.
The birthday was Cecile's idea in the sense that Cecile was the one who had cornered Duke Edran in the corridor three weeks prior and said, with the gentle implacability she deployed when she had decided something was happening regardless of anyone's preferences, that this year there would be a proper celebration. Not a formal occasion. Not a gathering of house representatives and social obligations dressed up as festivity. A real one — small, warm, the people Vivienne actually wanted in a room, doing something that had nothing to do with politics or propriety or the carefully managed performance of noble childhood.
Duke Edran had, apparently, agreed immediately, which Cecile had reported to Vivienne with the faint surprise of someone who had prepared for more resistance.
"He said," Cecile had told her, braiding her hair the morning after, "'whatever she'd like. Ask her what she'd like.'"
Vivienne had thought about it seriously, the way she thought about everything.
"Books," she'd said. "Good food. No speeches."
"That's it?"
"And Cecile," Vivienne had added. "Obviously."
Cecile had made the face she made when she was trying not to cry at something that didn't warrant crying, and had tied off the braid with slightly more feeling than was strictly necessary.
The morning of her birthday arrived with the particular consideration of good weather — bright and warm for the seventh month, the kind of day that felt like it had made an effort. Vivienne came downstairs to find the breakfast table decorated with the small, personal touches that were entirely Cecile's doing: a vase of garden flowers, a card in Caspian's enthusiastic and largely illegible handwriting, a considerably neater one from Rosalind that contained a poem she had clearly spent time on and would die before admitting it.
Duke Edran was already at the table.
He stood when she came in — which he did not usually do, and which made Vivienne stop in the doorway for a moment, caught off-guard by the gesture.
"Happy birthday," he said, in the quiet, direct way he said things that mattered.
"Thank you," she said, and came to sit down.
He gave her the gift after breakfast — a book, as requested, but not just any book. She unwrapped it at the table, Caspian hovering with barely contained impatience, Rosalind pretending not to watch, and found a volume she had mentioned once, months ago, in passing — a first edition cartographic survey of the empire's northern territories, the kind of book that appeared in collections once a generation and was not generally accessible to anyone who didn't already know where to look.
She looked at it for a moment.
"You remembered," she said.
"You mentioned it in August," Duke Edran said, with the mild tone that meant he had in fact committed it to memory the moment she'd said it and quietly spent three months tracking down a copy. "I wrote to a bookseller in the capital."
Vivienne held the book with both hands and thought about a man who had once stood at the edge of a nursery twice a week, said she seems healthy, and left — and who had somehow, without either of them noticing the exact moment it happened, become someone who spent three months hunting down a first edition because she'd mentioned wanting it once.
"Thank you," she said, and meant approximately forty things by it.
Duke Edran nodded, and poured his coffee, and did not make a fuss about it.
Caspian immediately demanded to know if there were maps in it, and the morning moved on.
The package from House Ashveil arrived in the afternoon post.
Vivienne had not expected it — Alaric's most recent letter had said nothing about a package, had been, in fact, characteristically focused on the outcome of his ongoing argument with his tutor about the northern edict, which had now escalated to the point of involving outside references and what Alaric described as "considerable mutual frustration" — and so when Aldous brought it to the east sitting room where she was reading, she looked at it with genuine surprise.
It was wrapped in plain paper, tied with dark blue string. The Ashveil crest was pressed into a small wax seal on the back, next to a note in familiar angular handwriting:
For your birthday. I made these myself, which I mention not to lower your expectations but to provide context.
She opened it.
Inside, wrapped carefully in a second layer of paper, were four small paintings.
Not large — each one fit comfortably in both her hands. Watercolour, she thought, on good paper, the paint applied with a precision that was completely consistent with everything she knew about how Alaric approached things. And the subjects—
She set them out on the desk, one by one, in the afternoon light.
The first was the Vaelmoor estate courtyard, seen from the gates — the fountain at center, the entrance steps, the hedgerow off to the left, leaning faithfully east-northeast. The same angle as his drawing, but in colour now: the grey stone warm in afternoon light, the fountain catching it, the hedgerow rendered in careful greens that somehow managed to convey its structural situation without making it look like a problem.
It looked, she thought, like home.
The second was the Ashveil library — the fireplace wall, the shelves climbing into shadow, the warm amber of the fire reflected on the floor. Two small figures sat at the base of the nearest shelf, not detailed enough to be portraits but recognizable by posture: one very upright, legs straight out, a book open in his lap; one tucked sideways, feet curled under, leaning slightly toward the first.
Vivienne looked at this one for a long time.
The third was the croquet lawn. She recognized it from the angle — the garden behind the house, the wickets slightly askew, Caspian's doing preserved faithfully in watercolour. A mallet lay abandoned in the foreground. In the middle distance, two figures stood facing each other: one shorter, one taller, and between them the suggestion of a croquet ball that had clearly just been struck in an impressive direction.
At the bottom, in very small handwriting: Your form improved considerably.
She laughed — actually laughed, the real kind, sudden and surprised — and set it down.
The fourth was the road.
Not the road she remembered. Not the dark, cold, frightening thing it had been that night, with torchlight and thunder of hooves and the dried salt of tears on her cheeks. This was a daytime road, a spring road, a road with trees on either side coming into leaf, the light coming through them in long diagonals. At the end of it, barely suggested rather than painted, something bright — not a destination, exactly. More a direction. The sense of somewhere the road was going.
She didn't need to read the small note at the bottom to understand it, but she read it anyway:
The road looked different the second time I took it. I thought you should see it that way.
Vivienne sat with the four paintings spread in front of her for a long time.
She thought about an eight year old who had started drawing — had learned to draw, apparently, specifically for this, picking up watercolours with the same focused determination he brought to languages and bladework and imperial edict arguments — because he had a thing he wanted to give her and words weren't going to be enough for it.
She thought: he saw what the road looked like when it was frightening, and he painted it the other way.
The unnamed thing in her chest — the thing that had been growing since a Winter Court pavilion, through a library floor and a croquet lawn and a grey goodbye morning — pressed against its own edges, steady and warm and considerably larger than it had been when it started.
She picked up her pen.
Alaric,
I've been sitting with the paintings for an hour and I still don't entirely know what to say about them, which is unusual for me, so I'm going to say the true thing and hope that's enough:
They're the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever given me. In either—
She stopped.
Crossed out either.
In my life. Thank you for making them yourself. The library one especially. And the road.
I still have the drawing, for what it's worth. It's in the top drawer of the desk in the east sitting room, next to the paper and charcoal. I take it out sometimes when I'm thinking about something difficult. I don't know if that's strange. I've decided not to care if it is.
The croquet note at the bottom was unnecessary and completely accurate and I appreciated it enormously.
Write back soon. Tell me how the edict argument ends. I have a feeling your tutor is going to concede eventually and I want to know when it happens.

P.S. I'm six now, which feels significant without being able to explain why. Cecile cried at breakfast, which she says she didn't but she did. Father gave me a first edition cartographic survey of the northern territories that he spent three months finding. I think we're going to be alright. I think we already are.
The house was quiet by evening.
Caspian had exhausted himself trying to identify the beetle from his earlier discovery in a new reference book Rosalind had given him — a gesture she had explained as "practical, not sentimental," which was Rosalind's way of saying she had thought about what he actually wanted and gotten it — and had fallen asleep over it at the dinner table, which Duke Edran had simply worked around, adjusting the soup bowl situation with the matter-of-fact acceptance of a father who had made his peace with Caspian.
Rosalind had retreated to her room. Aldous had dimmed the lamps.
Vivienne sat in the east sitting room with the four paintings laid out on the desk in the light of a single candle, and the first edition cartographic survey open on her lap, and the quiet of a house at the end of a good day settling around her like something she had earned.
Duke Edran appeared in the doorway at half past eight.
He looked at the paintings. Didn't say anything for a moment.
"He made those?" he said.
"He started drawing," Vivienne said. "Apparently."
Duke Edran looked at the road painting for a long moment. At the daytime road with the light coming through the trees.
"Hm," he said, which meant considerably more than it sounded like.
He came and sat in the chair across from her — the visitor's chair, the large leather one he'd once used for correspondence meetings and which was now, unambiguously, Vivienne's chair, the footstool permanently positioned beneath it.
"There's something you should know," he said. "I was going to wait, but—" he paused, looking at her with that expression, the one that meant he was deciding whether she was old enough for something and arriving at yes faster than he used to. "It can be a birthday thing, if you like. A different kind."
Vivienne closed the cartographic survey. "Tell me."
"There's movement at the palace," Duke Edran said. "Not Ashter — that's resolved, or resolving. This is something else. The Emperor has been—" he paused, choosing words. "Unwell. It's not widely known yet. The Court has been managing the information carefully, but Ashveil has sources there, and he passed this to me before he left."
Vivienne was very still.
"Unwell how?" she asked.
"In the way that raises questions about succession," Duke Edran said quietly. "He has no direct heir. He has nephews, cousins — several claims, none of them clean. The kind of situation that, if it develops, will make everything that happened with Ashter look like a household disagreement."
Vivienne thought about this with the focused, layered attention she brought to political problems — which she had been thinking about in one form or another since she was fourteen months old and had concluded there appeared to be an emperor.
"Every house will start positioning," she said.
"They've already started," Duke Edran said. "Quietly. The way things start quietly before they start loudly."
"And House Vaelmoor?"
Duke Edran looked at her.
"House Vaelmoor," he said, "has a six year old daughter who reads political treatises for entertainment and has recently developed a friendship with the heir of one of the empire's most significant ducal houses." He paused. "We are, I think, better positioned than we were a year ago. Whether we want to be or not."
Vivienne looked at the four paintings on the desk. The courtyard, the library, the croquet lawn, the road.
"Alaric doesn't know yet," she said. It wasn't a question.
"His father will have told him by now," Duke Edran said. "Ashveil doesn't keep things from his son."
She thought about a letter in transit — her letter about the paintings, about being six, about I think we already are — traveling north on the road that now had a daytime version, with light coming through the trees. She thought about a letter that would arrive at the Ashveil estate and be read by someone who would, by the time it arrived, know about an emperor who was unwell and a succession that was uncertain and the particular way the world had of becoming complicated precisely when you'd gotten used to it being simple.
"What do we do?" she asked.
Duke Edran was quiet for a moment.
"We watch," he said. "We stay close to the people we trust. We don't move before we understand what we're moving toward." He looked at her. "And we remember that whatever comes — however loud it gets — this house and the people in it are what matters. Everything else is maneuvering."
Vivienne nodded.
Outside, the seventh month night had settled in fully — warm and dark and full of the quiet sounds of a house at rest. The candle on the desk threw long shadows across the four small paintings: a courtyard, a library, a croquet lawn, a road going somewhere bright.
"Daddy," Vivienne said.
"Mm."
"Thank you for today."
Duke Edran looked at her — the long, quiet look of a man who had learned, slowly and imperfectly and better than he'd expected, how to be someone's father.
"Thank you for being six," he said. "I find I like it considerably more than I expected to."
Vivienne looked at him.
"You didn't expect to like it at all," she said.
"No," he agreed, with the almost-smile. "I didn't."
She looked back at the paintings. At the road with its daytime light.
Something is coming, she thought. Something large, and complicated, and full of the particular noise that happened when powerful people stopped being patient with each other.
But that was tomorrow's problem, and the week after's, and the year after's.
Tonight there were four paintings on a desk and a first edition atlas on her lap and a father sitting across from her who had spent three months finding a book because she'd mentioned it once.
Tonight she was six years old and she was loved and the storm had passed and the next one hadn't arrived yet.
She opened the atlas to the northern territories.
"Come look at this map," she said. "The annotations in the margin near the mountain passes — I think there's an error."
Duke Edran leaned over.
"Show me," he said.
And the candle burned on, warm and steady, while outside the empire held its breath and waited for whatever came next.
