The letter came on a Tuesday.
Mel was in the middle of the queen's morning correspondence when it was brought to her — not through the usual palace channels but directly, by a man she didn't recognize, which was the first thing that was wrong. The second thing was the seal, which was not a seal she recognized either. The third thing was her own name on the outside, written in handwriting that was not her brother's but that had the specific character of someone attempting to reproduce a style they knew well without achieving it quite.
She set the other letters down.
She opened it and read it.
She sat very still for a moment in the way that people sit still when the body has received information that the mind is not yet ready to process and is buying time.
Then she folded the letter and put it in her pocket and went to the window and looked at the palace gardens and breathed.

Torvin had been apprehended by the king's investigators on a Monday morning in the merchants' quarter, where he had been staying in lodgings that he had chosen for their obscurity and which had been found, Mel was told, through what the official account described as an anonymous report to the palace guard.
He had been found in possession of documents.
He had been taken to the palace's secure holding facility, which was the official name for the building that everyone in the palace knew the unofficial name of and which no one said aloud.
Mel had requested an audience with him.
The audience had been denied.
She had stood in the corridor outside the queen's apartments for a long time after receiving the denial, with the folded letter in her pocket and the particular stillness of a person who is holding something very heavy and has not yet decided where to set it down.
She went to the queen.
Lashina was at her dressing table. She looked up at Mel's entrance in the mirror with an expression that was, for the queen, the closest equivalent to sympathy she was capable of producing on short notice: a careful arrangement of the face that communicated attention without committing to anything more specific.
"I've heard," the queen said, before Mel could speak. "I am deeply troubled by this news."
Mel stood in the doorway.
"He didn't do it," Mel said.
Not loudly. Not with the quality of accusation that might have prompted a different kind of response. Simply as a statement. The statement of someone who knows their brother.
The queen turned on her dressing stool to face her.
"Mel," she said, gently, "the documents—"
"I know his handwriting." Mel's voice was still even. Still quiet. The evenness of someone who has learned, over thirty years, that the way you say a thing determines how long you are permitted to keep saying it. "I know his handwriting as well as I know my own. Those documents are not his."
The queen looked at her.
Long enough for Mel to read, in the amber-lit privacy of the queen's composed face, the thing that was not there. Not guilt, not discomfort, not the slight tell of a woman managing an inconvenient truth. Nothing. The composed blankness of someone for whom the thing being discussed is already resolved.
"The investigation will run its course," the queen said. "If there has been an error—"
"I want to see him," Mel said.
"That is not within my—"
"You can make it within your authority, Your Majesty" Mel said. "If you choose to."
A long moment.
The queen's hands folded in her lap.
"The audience with your brother," she said carefully, "could be seen as interference with the king's investigation. At a time when my relationship with the king's confidence is—" she paused "—requiring delicacy. I cannot extend that kind of exposure for—"
"He is my brother, Your Majesty." Mel said.
The queen said nothing.
And that nothing — that specific, composed, entirely unsurprised nothing — told Mel everything she had needed the last confirmation of.
She bowed.
She left.

She was not permitted to see him.
She tried four more times through four different channels over the following eight days, and each attempt encountered a different version of the same obstruction: a procedural requirement, a timing conflict, a question of authorization that needed to go through one more level of approval before it could be granted.
Torvin was held for eleven days.
On the twelfth day, he was transferred — as a prisoner, under escort, on the first leg of a journey that was officially described as transit to the Veldrathi judicial authority for formal proceedings.
He did not complete the journey.
The official report, which reached the palace six days later, described an illness. Sudden onset. The physician accompanying the transit party had been unable to determine the cause. Death had occurred during the night. The body had been returned for family interment.
The physician's report did not use the word poison.
It did not need to.

Mel conducted the funeral on a Thursday in early summer, in the small garden of the house in the city's western quarter where she and Torvin had grown up.
The garden was not large. Their mother had planted it with the same combination of practicality and unrealized aspiration that had characterized everything about her — useful herbs along the south wall, a small rose bed that had never fully thrived, a stone path between them that had been laid on a budget and had buckled in the frost of the first winter and had never been properly relaid.
There were eight people in attendance.
None of them was from the palace.
None of them, notably, was the queen.
Two days before the funeral, a palace servant had arrived at Mel's city house with a small wrapped package. Inside was a single white flower — the common kind, the kind that grew in roadside ditches and was sold by the bunch for two coppers at the market stalls. The kind that was sent to funerals when the sender wanted to observe the form of condolence while communicating something else entirely.
There was no note.
There was no need for one.
Mel stood at her brother's graveside in the morning light and held the white flower and thought about thirty years of silence.
She thought about a boy who had been small and quick and who had trusted her the way that younger siblings trust older ones — completely, unreservedly, with the specific faith of someone who has decided that the person in front of them is the safest thing in their world.
She thought about what she had not done.
She thought about what she had known and chosen to keep.
She thought about the queen's composed face in the mirror, and the nothing where guilt should have been, and the specific moment when she had understood that she had spent thirty years being the most loyal thing in a woman's life who had no category for loyalty that was not also utility.
She placed the white flower on the grave.
She looked at it for a long time.
Then she walked back through the buckled stone path and the ungrown roses and the practical herbs, and she went back to the palace, and she performed her afternoon duties with the flawless precision of thirty years of practice, and she said nothing.
And in the evening, when the queen was asleep and the apartments were quiet, Mel sat in the small attendant's room off the dressing chamber and took out the letter that had first told her of her brother's arrest — the letter with the wrong handwriting, the letter she had kept because keeping things was her deepest habit — and looked at it.
Then she folded it carefully and put it in the inside pocket of the plain coat she wore on her days off.
Thirty years of silence.
It was ending.
She did not know yet how. She did not know yet toward what. She knew only that something in her, something that had been bending in the same direction for three decades under the pressure of a woman who treated loyalty as infrastructure, had found tonight the angle at which it would not bend anymore.
She blew out the lamp.
