In the early months — the east tower months, the fever months — meals had been a matter of logistics rather than social choreography: food arriving at doors, eating alone, the human act of nourishment reduced to its most functional components. But the cedar bedroom recovery had introduced Sera into a domestic proximity that had eventually, through the gradual and slightly inevitable physics of shared daily space, produced the breakfast table as a place where people sometimes sat at the same time.
Now, almost two years into the house confinement that had replaced the east tower, the breakfast table was something more complicated.
Gerffron was twenty-three years old — twenty-three in this body, twenty-three by the arithmetic of the Zenos empire's calendar, though the soul inside it had accumulated significantly more living than the number suggested. He had been Deepak Sehwal first, for twenty-two years of a life in Kolkata that felt, from here, like a dream you have of a place you love — vivid in some details and entirely gone in others, available in the mornings in those first waking moments and evaporating like all dreams do when the day properly starts.
He was twenty-three and it was morning and the breakfast table had Lady Elowen at it.
This was not unusual. Gerffron poured his tea.
The morning was ordinary in all its details — the kitchen yard sounds below, the bread smell from the oven, Selfi setting the rack of toast on the table with the specific efficiency she brought to all household tasks, the autumn light coming in at the familiar angle through the east window.
Then Lady Elowen set down her correspondence and said:
"Gorgina's birthday is in six weeks."
Gerffron looked up.
"Oh, is that so?" he said.

"I want to hold a proper celebration," she said. "A dinner, at minimum. Possibly a small banquet if the invitations can be managed. It has been—" she paused, choosing with care "—some years since this household has held a social occasion."
"Almost three years," Gerffron said.
"Three years," she confirmed. "Which is long enough that the absence of occasion has become its own kind of statement. One that I would prefer to correct."
He looked at his tea.
"You're asking my opinion?"
"I am asking," Lady Elowen said, with the precision of someone who distinguishes carefully between types of asking, "whether you have an objection. Your presence at a social occasion of this kind would be the household's first formal acknowledgment of your current status. Which has changed from what it was three years ago in ways that have not yet been publicly expressed."
"Y-you want to reintroduce me to the social world?"
"I want to reintroduce this household to the social world," she said. "You are part of this household. Therefore, yes."
A beat.
"And Her Grace?" he said.
"I will speak with Gorgina."
He looked at her for a moment — this woman who had come to the corridor bend every morning for thirteen months and breathed, who had said things unfinished in doorways, who had sat in the chair beside his sickbed and said I did not anticipate the cumulative effect with the closest precision to an apology her vocabulary allowed.
"All right," he said.
Lady Elowen picked up her correspondence.
"Good," she said, in the tone of someone who has completed an administrative task.
Gerffron finished his breakfast.
He dreamed of birthdays.
Not that night — the dream came three nights later, arriving with the specific, uninvited clarity of dreams that have been waiting for an occasion to surface. The kind of dream that doesn't announce itself as significant until you're already inside it and find that the world it has built is so complete, so dense with the particular sensory texture of the real thing, that the dreaming mind simply accepts it as waking.
He was in Kolkata.
The house was exactly as he remembered it — the specific size of it, the way the rooms connected, the light that came in at the afternoon angle through the window that faced the neighbour's building and was partially obscured by a water tank that had been there since before any of them could remember. The smell: the combination of the building's old cement and his mother's kitchen and something floral that was either the washing powder or a plant on the balcony that he could never quite locate but always knew was there.

His mother was at the stove.
She was making warm payesh. This was the birthday constant — had been since he was small, since before he had opinions about birthday traditions — sweet payesh and aloo paratha and the specific song she sang while she cooked, which was not a birthday song in any conventional sense but was the song she had sung at every birthday he could remember and had become, through repetition and love, inextricably associated with the day.
She was singing it now.
He stood in the kitchen doorway and looked at her back — the familiar shape of her, the way she moved between the stove and the counter with the unhurried competence of a woman in complete command of her kitchen — and felt something in his chest that arrived without warning and with total force.
She turned.
"Ei toh tui, There you are," she said, in Bengali, with the mild, fond exasperation of a woman who has been expecting someone and has decided that mild, fond exasperation is the appropriate greeting. "Bhabchima tui kotokhhone ashbi khabarer gondho peye, I was wondering when you would smell the food and appear."
"Maa," he said.
That was all he said.
She looked at him for a moment with the eyes that had always seen him more clearly than he was comfortable with — the eyes that had known, before he told her, that Tokyo was about more than the scholarship, that the going away was also a running away, that her son had a grief in him he had not yet named and was trying to outpace.
She crossed the kitchen and cupped his face in her hands.
Her hands were warm. They were always warm — she had the specific warmth of a person who runs slightly hotter than everyone around them, who is always the warmest thing in the room.
"My boy." she said.
He woke up crying.
It was not graceful crying. It was the specific, inelegant kind that arrives from the deepest part of the body, bypassing all the management systems, not caring what it looks like or who is present. He let it come completely and without management and when it was done, when the wave had passed through entirely and left him hollowed and quiet in the pre-dawn dark of the cedar bedroom, he lay on his back and stared at the ceiling and breathed.
His mother was alive.
He believed this. He had no way to confirm it — had no access to the world he had come from, no mechanism for checking — but he believed it with the specific, stubborn faith of someone who has decided that a certain thing is too important to be uncertain about.
She was alive in Kolkata, in the house, making food that smelled the way food smelled in dreams of home. She had a grief she was carrying — the loss of her son, the silence where his calls had been, the closed chapter of Hyderabad — and she was carrying it in the way he had always watched her carry hard things, with the specific combination of practical continued living and private, uncollapsing sorrow.
He pressed his palms together.

'Please let them have a good day today and tomorrow and every day that I am not there to know about.'
'Please let her know, somehow, in whatever way such things transmit across worlds and impossibilities, that her son is thinking of her.'

The pre-dawn dark of the cedar bedroom held the prayer with the neutrality of rooms — neither affirming nor denying, simply present.
He lay there until the light began to change.
When the fifth bell rang and the kitchen yard began its morning sounds, he got up. He washed his face. He combed his hair. He descended to the breakfast table and poured his tea and told Lady Elowen that yes, the birthday banquet was a good idea, and watched her nod with the satisfaction of someone completing an administrative task.
He carried the morning with him.
He carried his mother with him.
