Chapter 86 - Chapter-85~The Queen's Garden

The carriage journey to the palace took forty minutes.

Gerffron sat on one side with his hands in his lap and looked at the city moving past the carriage window and felt the specific quality of nerves that was not simple fear but its more complicated cousin — the nerves of a person who is competent, who knows they are competent, who has prepared as well as preparation allows, and who is nonetheless aware that competence and preparation are not the same as control, that the world beyond the carriage window did not calibrate its surprises to his readiness for them.

Selfi sat across from him.

She had been assigned the escort by Gorgina's direct instruction, which meant she was operating under the dual mandate of personal attendant and the slightly different, slightly more attentive mandate of someone whose employer had not entirely stopped being interested in what the former consort did and said in social contexts. She was aware that Gerffron almost certainly knew this. They had not discussed it. They had reached, in the past two months, the specific equilibrium of two people who exist in a slightly complicated professional arrangement and have decided, by mutual unspoken agreement, to make the best of it rather than performing either its complications or their resolution.

She looked at him now.

He was wearing the new clothes.

The estate tailor had come to the library the day after the breakfast conversation and had spent forty minutes with Gerffron in the specific focused interchange of a craftsman who has been given both an unusual subject and an unusual mandate — the mandate being, in Gorgina's instruction to the tailor, accurate and appropriate rather than impressive, which was an instruction that the tailor had described to Orreth afterward as the most interesting brief he had received in years.

The result was — Selfi assessed it now with the professional eye she had developed over eight years of household service, which had given her a very precise understanding of what clothing communicated about the people wearing it — the result was correct. Not flashy. Not the aggressive elegance of a man who needs the clothes to establish something. A dark green coat, clean-lined, with simple silver buttons and a cut that acknowledged the body without commenting on it. Honest clothing. Clothing that said: I am present, I am appropriate, I am not performing.

It looked, she thought, like him.

This was either the most useful or the most concerning thing about it, depending on how you interpreted the social context of the queen's tea party.

"You're staring," he said, without looking away from the window.

"I'm not," she said.

"You are. I can feel it."

"That's your imagination."

"It is possible," he said, "that after two and a half years in a restricted domestic environment my imagination has become very finely calibrated to the sensation of being observed."

She looked at the carriage wall.

"The clothes are good," she said.

He looked at her.

"Ghalib is a good tailor," she said. "He made the Duke's birthday coat as well. He has a talent for — for knowing what something should say before the person wearing it has decided what they want it to say."

"Is that reassuring or alarming?"

"Depends entirely on what you want to say," she said.

He was quiet for a moment.

"I don't want to say anything," he said. "I want to attend a tea party without incident and come home."

"That is also a thing the clothes say," she said. "Quite clearly, actually."

He looked at the window again.

"Will you tell me," he said, after a moment, "if I am about to put my foot in something? This court is not a context I have navigated in several years and the parts of it I did navigate I navigated under entirely different circumstances and with rather different objectives than I currently have."

She looked at him.

This was, she reflected, an unusual thing to say — unusual in its directness, in the specific, uncalculated honesty of a person who has decided that social performance for the sake of social performance was a resource he no longer wanted to expend and who was instead, in its place, simply asking for what he needed.

She had been watching him do this for months.

She had been watching it with the specific, involuntary attention of someone who keeps encountering a thing they have never seen before and keeps finding it interesting against their will.

"I will tell you," she said.

"Thank you," he said.

They rode the rest of the way in the specific, comfortable quiet of two people who have arrived, without planning to, at a working arrangement.

The palace's spring garden was — he had not been prepared for it.

He had known the palace. He had attended the Winter Ball three years ago and had moved through the palace's formal spaces with the careful awareness of a man mapping terrain, noting exits and entrances and the social geography of a room he needed to understand quickly. He had been in the throne room. He had been in the formal receiving halls.

He had not been in the garden.

They were shown through the palace's interior to the garden entrance by an attendant who moved with the practiced, slightly mechanical efficiency of someone who had walked this route many times today and expected to walk it many more times before the afternoon was done, and when the door was opened and the garden was revealed, Gerffron stepped through and stopped.

Selfi, coming behind him, nearly walked into his back.

"Sorry," he said, and moved aside, and she came through and stood beside him and they both looked.

The queen's palace garden was not the Wadee estate's inner courtyard garden, which was lovely in the specific, domestic way of a garden that had been loved and tended for decades by people who lived alongside it. The queen's garden was something different in kind — a garden that had been designed rather than grown, that had been built to a vision rather than to a relationship, that existed as the expression of a particular kind of power rather than a particular kind of care.

It was, nonetheless, magnificent.

It occupied a formal square behind the palace's southern wing, enclosed on three sides by the palace's stone and on the fourth by a high wall that was itself covered, in every season, by the trained climbing roses that the palace gardeners maintained with a precision that made Gerffron think of Weld and the rose beds at home, except that this was a rose wall a hundred feet long and twelve feet high, covered in the spring blossoms that had been coaxed into early opening by the specific horticultural attentiveness of an institution that could afford the best gardeners in the empire.

The roses were white.

Not a single shade of white — not the flat, uniform white of a thing that has had all its variation removed in the service of simplicity. White the way complicated things were white, which was many whites simultaneously — cream white, ivory white, the specific bright white of the newest blossoms just opened, the slightly warmer white of the ones that had been open for two days, the beginning of the translucent toward which white roses moved as they aged.

Against the palace's gray stone and the green of the box hedges that defined the garden's formal structure, the white wall was extraordinary.

The garden itself was arranged around a central fountain — not an ostentatious fountain, not the kind that announced itself, but a good fountain, one that produced the sound of moving water in the specific register that was neither absent nor intrusive, that entered the garden's soundscape as a continuous, unobtrusive presence rather than a feature.

The tables were arranged on the central lawn.

Low tables in the garden style, with cushioned chairs and the formal tea service set out and the spring flowers in low arrangements at each table's center — small flowers, intimate flowers, the kind chosen for fragrance as much as appearance.

The light was the specific, clear quality of a spring afternoon that had not yet accumulated the warmth of summer — bright, direct, without haze, illuminating everything with the clean precision of light that has not yet learned to soften.

Gerffron stood in the garden entrance and looked at all of it.

He thought: I have been in a house for two and a half years and had forgotten that the world had this in it.

He stood there for longer than was strictly socially appropriate.

He was aware of this and did not immediately remedy it.

The fountain moved.

The white roses were very white against the gray stone.

The afternoon light came down through the clear spring air and lay across the formal lawn with the specific quality of light that makes you think, if you are the kind of person who thinks this kind of thing, that beauty is not an ornament but a fact of the world, that it exists whether or not you are present to receive it, and that the receiving of it is not a luxury but a necessary human function, and that the past two and a half years had been a period during which he had received very little of it and had managed on the memory of it and on the small daily beauties available in a confined domestic space, and that standing here now with the full scale of it available to his senses was a physical sensation as much as an aesthetic one.

He breathed.

The garden smelled of the white roses and the spring earth and the fountain's water and something floral that he could not immediately identify — one of the low arrangements at the tables, or the box hedges catching the afternoon warmth, or something planted in the borders that he couldn't see from the entrance.

He breathed again.

Selfi stood beside him.

She did not hurry him.

She had been in the queen's garden before, on household business, and she knew its dimensions and its beauty and she had not previously seen them produce this specific effect in anyone, the effect of a man who has been living at a subsistence level of beauty and has suddenly been given access to the full amount, and she found the watching of it — she did not examine this, she simply noted it — she found the watching of it unexpectedly affecting.

He was standing with his shoulders less contained than they were in the house.

She had not previously noticed how contained his shoulders usually were until they weren't.

"It's beautiful," he said. Very quietly. Not to her, or not only to her — to the garden, to the fact of it.

"Yes," she said.

He looked at the rose wall for another moment.

Then someone called his name.
