The first thing Gerffron was aware of was the ceiling.
It was an inn ceiling — he knew this before he knew anything else, before he had assembled the room or the light or the situation, because inn ceilings had a specific quality that was different from the ceilings of houses. They were higher than necessary and lower than grand and they had the specific, anonymous texture of surfaces that had been looked at by a great many people who were not going to be there long enough to form an opinion about them.
He looked at the ceiling for a moment.
He looked at it for longer than the ceiling warranted because the ceiling was the safest available thing to look at while the rest of his awareness assembled itself from its various scattered components.
The components assembled slowly.
This was the drug — not the drug's active phase, which had apparently concluded sometime in the night, but the drug's aftermath, which had the specific, depleted quality of a body that had been through something chemical and was now in the process of accounting for the experience. His head had the particular weight of something that had been used in ways it had not consented to. His mouth had the particular dryness of a body that had prioritized other things over hydration for an extended period.
He was in a bed.
He was naked.
He looked at the ceiling for a few more seconds.
Then he turned his head.
The room was a good inn room.
Small iron stove in the corner, banked but still warm — the fire had been tended recently or had been built well enough to maintain itself through the night. Small window on the east wall, the morning light coming through it at the angle of early hours, the specific pale quality of autumn morning light that had not yet accumulated any warmth.
The chair at the room's small table had a coat on it.
Not his coat.
His coat — the fitting coat, the charcoal one, the one with the revised sleeve measurements still chalked on it — was folded on the foot of the bed with the specific care of something that had been placed rather than discarded. Someone had folded his coat and placed it at the foot of the bed.
The coat on the chair was someone else's.
The pack on the floor beside the chair was someone else's.
The boots by the door were someone else's.
Gerffron looked at the someone else's things arranged in the room with him and attempted, with the full application of a mind that was not yet fully operational, to assemble what had happened.
He had been in the boutique.
He had been in the fitting room.
There had been — the back door, the two men, the struggle — this part he had with reasonable clarity, had the specific sensory memory of the needle entering his neck and the drug arriving in layers and the fitting room tilting and himself being carried through the back door into an alley.
After the alley, the memories became unreliable.
Not absent — blurred, the way dreams were blurred, available as impressions rather than sequences. He had the impression of movement. Of being carried. Of hands that were careful in the specific way of someone for whom careful was a considered choice rather than a default.
He had the impression of a room.
He had the impression of a face.
This was the part that was most blurred and also the part he kept returning to — a face, seen through the drug's particular lens, softened at the edges, carrying a quality he could not immediately extract from the blur into anything specific. He had thought something, looking at the face, in the drug-altered state that had stripped his thoughts of their usual management.
He had thought: I may know this face. I might have been wanting to see this face.
The drug had not preserved what came after that.
He looked at the someone else's coat on the chair.
He looked at the someone else's pack on the floor.
He looked at the boots by the door.
His savior might had stepped out.
The possessions still in the room as spoke the message: I left and I am coming back. I did not leave you here without intending to return.
Gerffron sat up.
His body had opinions about this movement and expressed them with the comprehensive candor of a body that had been through a great deal in the past eighteen hours and felt that comprehensive candor was warranted.
He sat up anyway.
He sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the room and thought about the face he could not reconstruct from the blur.
He thought: someone must'vd carried me out of that alley and brought me here and tended the fire and folded my coat and is currently somewhere outside this room. I have no idea who. I should be here when they return, to thank them. To find out who they are. To understand what happened. But I have been missing from the Wadee estate since yesterday afternoon.
He thought about Gorgina.
He thought about Selfi and the guards.
He thought about what the household would be doing right now — what the absence of its consort since yesterday afternoon would have produced in terms of household response, in terms of Gorgina's response specifically, in terms of the specific quality of situation that would be waiting for him when he returned.
He needs to go.
He looked at the coat on the chair.
He looked at the pack.
He looked at the boots.
He thought: whoever you are, you went to considerable trouble for a stranger in an alley.
He thought: I will find a way to account for this properly.
He stood up and got dressed.
He picked up his folded fitting coat from the foot of the bed and held it for a moment.
He set it back down.
He crossed to the table.
He found the inn's complimentary paper — the small folded sheet that inns provided for correspondence, the single piece with the inn's name pressed into the header — and he found the pen beside the water jug and he stood at the table and thought for a moment.
He wrote two words.
He weighted the paper with the water jug so it would not shift.
He picked up his coat.
He went to the door.
He looked back at the room once — the stove, the chair with the coat, the pack on the floor, the boots by where he was standing, the morning light through the east window — and felt something he could not immediately name, something that lived in the territory between gratitude and the specific, aching quality of a thing you are leaving before you are ready to leave it.
He opened the door.
He went down the back stairs.
He went out the back door.
He went home.
The note said: thank you., in short cursive handwriting.
Nothing else.
Styrmir found it when he came back from the water basin at the end of the hall, carrying the second jug he had gone to fill because the first had been used and he had thought — he had thought Gerffron might want water when he woke, might want it ready, might want—
He stood in the doorway.
The bed was empty.
The coat was gone.
The note was weighted under the water jug.
He crossed the room.
He picked it up.
He read the two words.
He stood in the empty inn room for a while.
He looked at the east window, through which the morning light was continuing its indifferent progress across the floor.
He set the note on the table.
He sat in the chair.
He sat in the chair for a long time and thought about the night and about the person who had just left through the back stairs and about the two words on the piece of paper and about the fact that somewhere between the alley and the dawn Gerffron had been awake and lucid enough to write them and had chosen, in that lucidity, to leave rather than stay.
He thought about whether Gerffron had known who he was.
He thought about the drug and what the drug did to memory — how it kept some things and lost others, how the things it kept were impressionistic rather than precise, how a face seen through its particular lens might be recognised as known without being recognised as specific.
He thought: he may not know.
He thought: he may know.
He thought: there is no version of this in which I find out today.
He picked up the note.
He folded it.
He put it in his coat pocket alongside the two pebbles.
He sat in the chair for a little longer.
Then he stood.
He had a city to move through carefully and an inn to check out of and a road to think about — whether to stay in the capital now that Gerffron had been found and returned, whether the official envoy's postponement could be leveraged somehow, whether there were things he could accomplish here in the weeks before the envoy resumed that were worth the risk of remaining.
He had things to think about.
He put on his coat.
He had been very close, for the first time in three years, to the fixed point his entire internal world was oriented around.
He was going to take the time to stand in the fact of that before he moved on to the thinking.
He stood in it.
The morning light came through the east window.
The stove was warm.
He stood in the room for exactly as long as he needed to.
Then he picked up his pack.
He went to think about the road.
Gerffron arrived at the Wadee estate at the second bell past breakfast.
He arrived on foot, having collected himself from the inn's neighbourhood by the practical method of walking — the morning cold had been useful for this, had assisted the final clearing of the drug's residual effects with the blunt efficiency of autumn air applied directly to a person who had been through a great deal and needed the sensation of the world being real and external and manageable.
He was still wearing the fitting coat.
The sleeves were still chalked with the revised measurements.
He walked up the estate road.
He walked through the gate, which the gate guard opened with the specific expression of a man encountering something he has not been sure he would encounter and who is recalibrating rapidly.
He walked up the drive.
He reached the main entrance.
The door opened before he reached it.
Gorgina was in the main hall.
She had been there for some time — he could tell this from the quality of her stillness, the specific stillness of a person who has been waiting in a space and has moved through the initial urgency of the waiting into a deeper, more settled layer of it. She was still in the working clothes she had been wearing when she rode out the previous evening — had not changed, which meant she had either not slept or had slept briefly and returned to waiting before any domestic considerations had reasserted themselves.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
She crossed the hall in four steps.
She stopped in front of him.
She looked at him with the amber eyes that had been conducting their private renegotiation for two years, and in those eyes right now there was something that was not the composed professional regard and not the complicated personal regard and not any of the various managed registers he had become fluent in over the course of their acquaintance.
What was in her eyes was something simpler and older than any of those.
She said: "Are you hurt?"
"No," he said.
She looked at him for another moment — assessing, checking the claim against the visual evidence, doing the rapid inventory of a person who has had their full capability all night and is applying it now.
"Where were you?" she said.
He looked at her.
He thought about the inn room. About the coat on the chair. About the face he could not reconstruct from the blur. About two words on a piece of paper and the specific, aching quality of leaving before you were ready.
"Someone found me in the alley," he said. "They brought me somewhere safe. I woke up this morning and came home."
The hall was very quiet.
"Who?" she said.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"The drug — I guess I was drugged, I-I don't have clear memories of who it was. I know someone carried me out of the alley. I know they kept me safe through the night. I know I woke up this morning, and they had stepped out, and I came home."
He delivered this with the complete, steady calm of a man who has decided what he is going to say and is saying it.
Gorgina looked at him.
"Gerffron," she said, and her voice had the quality it got when she was managing something very large through a very small aperture, "I rode through this city last night for four hours with six riders looking for you."
"I apologise," he said. "I'm sorry for the trouble."
"That is not—" she stopped. Breathed. "That is not what I am — I am not asking you to apologize for the trouble. I am asking you to tell me who took you out of an alley after two men with a needle put you in it."
"I told you what I know."
"You told me what you chose to tell me."
He looked at her.
She looked at him.
In the specific silence between them, something moved that was not the conversation they were having aloud but the one underneath it — the one that did not have words, that existed in the territory between two people who have been in close proximity for long enough that the space between them has its own language.
He was not going to tell her.
She knew he was not going to tell her.
He knew she knew.
"The two men in the alley," he said, redirecting with the precision of a man who understands that the best response to a wall is a door. "They were not robbers. They were professionals. Someone commissioned them."
Her jaw tightened.
"Yes," she said.
"You already knew."
"I suspected." She looked at him. "Do you know who?"
"I have a candidate list," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"You have a candidate list," she repeated.
"Two and a half years in a library gives you time to think about who wants you dead," he said.
She looked at him with the expression she wore when she was encountering the version of him that she had not fully anticipated and was in the process of recalibrating.
"You need to eat," she said. "The kitchen has been holding breakfast."
"Alright. I'll go then."
Something almost moved through her expression.
She turned.
He followed her toward the dining room.
At the dining room door she stopped.
She said, without turning: "The next time someone finds you in an alley, Gerffron, you do not leave before I am informed of where you are."
He was quiet for a moment.
"That is a very specific set of circumstances to make a rule about," he said.
"I am a very specific person," she said.
She went into the dining room.
He stood in the doorway for a moment.
He thought about the inn room.
He thought about the face in the blur.
He thought: I know I know you. I just don't know yet that I know.
He went in.
He ate breakfast.
The kitchen had indeed been holding it, and it was excellent, and he ate it with the focused appreciation of a man who had not eaten since the previous morning and whose body was filing a comprehensive grievance about this fact.
Lady Elowen arrived midway through and looked at him over her correspondence with the expression she reserved for situations that had resolved themselves in ways that were acceptable but that she was reserving the right to have further opinions about.
She said: "You look terrible."
"Good morning," he said.
"The sleeves on that coat are still wrong," she said.
He looked at the chalk marks.
"I'll rebook the boutique," he said.
Lady Elowen returned to her correspondence.
Gorgina drank her tea.
Gerffron ate his breakfast.
The morning continued.
The secret sat in the room between all of them, shaped differently for each person present — for Gerffron, the shape of something precious that he was not ready to name; for Gorgina, the shape of something she was not being given and was not going to stop wanting; for Lady Elowen, only the shape of a young man eating his breakfast who had, once again, declined to be the thing that the situation seemed designed to produce from him.
Outside, the autumn continued its work.
In a room two streets east of the main commercial avenue, a young man in a plain coat was sitting in a chair beside an east-facing window, holding a piece of paper with two words on it.
The morning light was the same for both of them.
Neither of them knew this.
