Styrmir had been in his palace room for approximately twenty minutes when the knock came.
He had used the twenty minutes efficiently.
He had unpacked the relevant things from his pack — the working documents, the correspondence files, the two items that were always packed last and unpacked first because they went in the most accessible pocket of the pack, which was the pocket closest to his person, and came out before anything else because they were the things he checked first when he arrived anywhere new, which was a habit he had developed approximately three years ago and had not questioned because the habit required no justification.
He had bathed.
The palace's guest accommodation was well-appointed — the Zenos court understood hospitality at least as well as it understood most things — and the bath had been hot and the soap had been the kind that the palace provided for distinguished guests, which was the kind made with quality oils rather than the practical, adequate kind that was the ambient reality of institutional life.
He was in his bathrobe.
His hair was still damp, pushed back from his face with the habitual gesture, droplets collecting at the ends and falling occasionally to his shoulder with the specific, deliberate indifference of water doing what water did.
The room smelled of musky sandalwood — the soap, and underneath it the specific, warm quality of a body that had recently been in hot water, and underneath that the faint remnant of the outdoor air from the docks that even the bath had not fully displaced.
The knock came.
"It's open," he said.
The door opened.
Princess Caelith of Veldrath entered and immediately produced a sound.
The sound was a specific, expressive sound — not a word, exactly, but the sound that people made when they encountered something that engaged their full sensory response and required immediate nonverbal communication of that engagement.
"Sandalwood," she said, with the expression of someone who has walked into a room and been hit in the face by the ambient atmosphere of it. "You smell like a lumber merchant's fever dream."
"The palace's soap," he said.
"It smells like — it's a lot," she said, pressing the back of her hand to her nose with the exaggerated quality of someone performing disgust rather than experiencing it. "How much did you use?"
"The appropriate amount."
"The appropriate amount of sandalwood soap for one person is considerably less than whatever evidence my nose is currently processing."
"I had been on a ship for two days."
"Two days does not require this much sandalwood."
"I had also been on a dock."
"Styrmir."
"And in a carriage."
"You smell like a forest fell on you," she said, and sat in the chair by the window with the easy, proprietary manner that she had in his rooms, which was the manner of three years of friendship conducted across a range of contexts and which he found, consistently, one of the more comfortable things in his life.
She looked at him.
He looked at the window.
She looked at the window.
She looked at him.
"Tell me," she said.
"Tell you what," he said.
"The carriage," she said. "How did it go. I watched you get in the carriage with the liaison and I watched the carriage leave and I have been in this palace for—" she checked the small clock on the mantel "—four hours, and in those four hours I have been fully occupied with the arrival and the formal reception and the briefing from the liaison who is, I will say, considerably better at this than I expected him to be—"
"He is," Styrmir said.
"—and I have been waiting for four hours to ask you how the carriage went, and you have been in here with your sandalwood, and I would like to know."
Styrmir was quiet for a moment.
He was quiet in the way he was sometimes quiet when he was deciding how much of something to give, which was not the same as deciding whether to be honest — he was always honest with Caelith — but the specific calibration of how much of the honest thing was available to be said in this specific moment.
"He didn't react the way I expected," he said.
Caelith waited.
"He was — he was professional. He was correct. He did all the things the liaison should do." Styrmir paused. "And then in the carriage he was himself. Which is — which was—" he stopped.
"Which was what," she said.
"He called me insufferable," Styrmir said.
Caelith looked at him.
"That's good," she said.
"I know."
"That's very good. That's the best possible thing. If he called you insufferable it means—"
"I know," Styrmir said.
"It means you got through the professional surface and into the actual person." She leaned forward slightly. "And the actual person called you insufferable."
"And said my ears were pink."
"He noticed your ears?"
"He said his ears were pink from the cold on the docks."
Caelith considered this.
"His ears," she said.
"Yes."
"He said his ears were pink."
"From residual cold. He was very specific about the cold being the cause."
"He was defensive about his ears," she said.
"Yes."
"Styrmir," she said, "a man who is professionally impervious to provocation does not get defensive about his ears unless the provocation is landing somewhere."
"I know that," Styrmir said.
"Then what is the problem."
He was quiet again.
"He said he has a newborn," he said.
Caelith was quiet.
She was quiet in the way she was quiet when she had received information and was processing it without the intermediary of immediate verbal response.
"A newborn," she said.
"He used it as a reason to go home rather than stay at the palace."
"A newborn child."
"Yes."
"His child."
"He said he had a newborn. He did not specify. I — I did not ask." A pause. "It was unexpected."
Caelith looked at him.
He was looking at the window.
She thought about what she knew about the Wadee household — which was more than Styrmir was always aware she knew, because she had been doing her own reading for three years, quietly and in the specific, thorough way of a woman who understood that context was the prerequisite for informed judgment.
She thought about the household staff, the known members, the domestic arrangements of the estate.
She thought: there is something off about the newborn.
She thought: but this is not the moment to press it.
"Did he seem—" she started.
"Don't," Styrmir said.
"I was only going to—"
"I know what you were going to say," he said. "And I don't want to have the conversation about whether it's his or not or what it means or whether I should be—" he stopped. "I know what I know. I know that I have been — I have been carrying this for years and I have been patient and I have been building toward this and I arrive on the dock and I see him and it is—" he stopped again.
Caelith waited.
"It is everything," he said, simply. "It is exactly what I knew it would be and entirely different from what I knew and the man has pink ears and he called me insufferable and I walked into a palace and felt like I was finally somewhere I was supposed to be, and then he said he had a newborn and I—"
He stopped.
He looked at the window.
Caelith looked at him.
She said, gently: "How long has it been?"
He was quiet.
She said: "Since the last time you saw him."
He said: "Two hundred and fifty days."
The room was quiet.
Caelith looked at him.
She said: "I'm sorry—?"
"Since the last time I was in his proximity," Styrmir said. "The specific days. Since the inn." He did not look at her. "Two hundred and fifty days."
Caelith sat with this for a moment.
She sat with the specific quality of a person encountering a number that she had not expected and which was doing something to her understanding of the situation that she needed a moment to process.
"You counted," she said.
"Yes."
"Every day?"
"Every day."
The silence was a different quality now.
"Since the inn," she said carefully.
"Yes."
"You were at an inn in the capital??!"
"Yes."
She looked at him.
He was still looking at the window.
"Styrmir," she said.
He looked at her.
She looked at his face — at the composed, careful face of a man who had been managing his feelings with considerable professional competence for the duration of this conversation and who was now, in the specific way of people who had been managing things for too long, beginning to show the management in its visibility as management rather than as natural composure.
"What happened at the inn?" she asked.
A pause.
A longer pause.
He said: "I went to the capital before the delegation. Unofficially. I took a leave."
"I know," she said. "I signed the leave request."
"He was attacked," Styrmir said. "At a boutique. Two men with an injection. I found him in the alley."
She looked at him.
"I brought him to my inn," he said. "The drug — it was an aphrodisiac. He was— the effects were—" he stopped. He organized. "I managed the situation. I kept him safe. I was careful. There was no—" he stopped again. "There was nothing that required his full participation."
Caelith was completely still.
"Nothing," she said.
"Nothing significant," he said.
"Define significant."
A pause.
"Styrmir."
"He kissed me," Styrmir said.
The room was very quiet.
Caelith's expression moved through several configurations.
"He. kissed. you?" she said.
"He was drugged."
"He kissed you?!"
"He didn't know what he was doing!"
"But he kissed you!!" Caelith said, for the third time, with the specific quality of someone repeating a piece of information until it has fully arrived. "And you were so embarrassed about it that you didn't tell me. For two hundred and fifty days!"
"I—"
"Two hundred and fifty days, Styrmir!"
"I didn't want to—"
She stood up from the chair.
She crossed to where he was sitting.
She hit him on the shoulder.
Not hard — not the hit of someone genuinely angry, but the specific, exasperated hit of a person who has just discovered that their closest friend has been withholding significant information for an extended period and is communicating their feelings about this through the most direct available physical expression.
"Ow!" Styrmir said.
"You didn't tell me!" she said.
"I was embarrassed!"
"We are friends!" she said. "We are — I watched you get on a trade ship at the third bell of the night to sneak across a border for a man you've been in love with for a decade, and you didn't think this warranted—"
"It was complicated," he said.
"It is the least complicated thing that has happened in this story!" she said, which was not entirely accurate but which expressed a feeling precisely.
She hit him again.
"Caelith—"
"Two hundred and fifty days!"
"He didn't know it was me," Styrmir said. "He was unconscious when I arrived. He was drugged. He doesn't — he doesn't remember. He doesn't know it was me at the inn."
She stopped.
She looked at him.
She sat back down.
The room settled into a different quality of quiet — not the surprised quiet, not the exasperated quiet, but the quiet that arrived when a conversation had moved into its actual territory.
"He doesn't know," she said.
"No."
"So when you were in the carriage and he was—"
"He didn't know," Styrmir said. "He doesn't know. He will figure it out eventually. There is a — there is a note. I gave him a note. Two words. He left two words in return." He looked at the window. "Thank you. He left me thank you."
Caelith looked at him.
She looked at his profile — at the jaw and the winter-pale eyes and the composed, careful face of a young man who had been carrying two hundred and fifty days of a specific, particular kind of waiting and who had walked off a ship this morning and found exactly what he had been carrying it toward.
She thought about the road he had been walking since she had met him.
She thought about the dungeon and the border crossing and the herb garden in Helwick and the three years of building himself into something the empire could not ignore.
She thought about a man who counted.
She thought: A pure heart is the hardest possible thing to carry into a hard world. He has been carrying it anyway.
She said: "He called you insufferable."
Styrmir looked at her.
"And insufferable," she said, gently, "is a very specific word for a man who doesn't care."
He was quiet.
"The newborn," she said, "is probably not what you think it is. Give it a day."
"How do you—"
"Because I read the household reports before this delegation was confirmed," she said, "because I am a crown princess who does her homework, and the household staff records for the Wadee estate include a maid named Wren who delivered a son eight months ago, and the informal domestic arrangements of the estate suggest that the former consort has been acting in a parental-adjacent capacity for that child since the maid joined his personal service."
Styrmir was still.
"He's not the father," she said.
"You couldn't have said this when I told you about the newborn," he said.
"You needed to sit with it for a minute," she said. "It was good for you."
"It was not good for me."
"It was character-building."
"Caelith."
"You've been building character for twenty years," she said, standing again. "One more minute won't hurt." She went to the door. "Get dressed. The formal dinner is in two hours. And use less sandalwood next time — I could smell you from three carriages back."
She went out.
He sat in the bathrobe in the sandalwood-smelling room.
He thought about pink ears.
He thought about a person who had not known it was him.
He thought: Not yet. Not like this. Not here, not this way, not with the delegation and the court and everything else surrounding it. But he will know.
He thought about two hundred and fifty days.
He thought about what two hundred and fifty-one felt like.
He got up.
He got dressed.
He used, in the considered judgment of a man who had been told to use less, slightly less sandalwood.
He went to the formal dinner.
