It was, by any reasonable measure, the most alive thing in the city at this hour — the accumulated energy of commerce and conversation and the specific, organic chaos of people who had been there since before dawn and would be there until after dark and who occupied the space with the comprehensive, competitive vitality of a world that was entirely focused on the present moment.

Princess Caelith moved through all of it with the ease of someone for whom markets were familiar territory — not this specific market, but the category of market, the specific quality of a space where ordinary life conducted itself in public.
She bought a silk scarf for her head maid.
She bought a small, beautifully carved wooden box for her father — the king had a weakness for well-made small objects, had always had it, and the craftsman's stall she found on the eastern edge of the market had produced something that was exactly right.
She bought dried herbs for the delegation's cook, who had been quietly delighted by the variety available in the market and who had been managing the Zenos kitchen's cooperation with the specific, diplomatic charm of a professional for whom good ingredients were a universal language.
She ate something at a food stall that turned out to be a local speciality — a savoury pastry with a filling that she could not identify all the components of but which was, by any available measure, excellent.
She walked.
She observed.
She thought about the storage room above the medical shop and the two people in it and the specific, accumulated weight of everything she knew about both of them.
She thought about her father lying in his bed at the palace and the specific quality of the letters she had been sending him every three days — careful letters, letters that conveyed the official progress of the delegation and the unofficial texture of the situation, letters that she had been writing with the awareness that certain things in them were going to matter to him in ways that went beyond the diplomatic.
She stopped at a stall selling amber and glass beads.
She looked at them.
She bought a string of amber beads for no specific recipient.
She moved on.

He had recovered with the specific, dignified speed of a professional who had been in uncomfortable situations before and who had decided that the best approach to the current one was to behave as if nothing unusual had occurred and to collect his bonus at the end of the delegation.
He was currently eating a meat pie and looking at the textile stalls.
He caught up with one of the other delegates.
"Good pastry," the other delegate said.
"Excellent," Gilmour agreed.
The other delegate looked at him.
"Did the princess—"
"Stomach ache," Gilmour said firmly. "I had a stomach ache."
The other delegate looked at him with the expression of a person who had been standing adjacent to whatever had happened and had a clear view of it.
Gilmour asked the princess later on while they still toured the market; "Why did you do that, Your Highness?" He winced as he tapped his stomach, that punch was brutal, might leave a bruise.
"5%."
"Huh?"
"Your year end bonus. 10%."
"Wha-" they said.
"15%." Gilmour protested; "Your Highness, that's enough! That shall do!"
Both the delegate and the princess ate their pastries.
The market tour continued.

In the storage room above the medical shop, Styrmir was crouching on the floor.
He was crouching in front of Gerffron with the calm, focused attention of someone who had decided on an action and was performing it with the care it required.
He had, approximately twenty minutes after they had established that the door was not going to open and had made their peace with this, asked Gerffron to take off his boot.
Gerffron had looked at him.
He had said: "I have bandaging in my inner coat pocket. I carry it. I've been carrying it since the first sprain."
Gerffron had looked at the coat pocket.
He had taken off his boot.
The ankle was swollen.
Not catastrophically — not the dramatic, purple-black swelling of something that had been seriously injured. The moderate, persistent swelling of something that had been aggravated on top of a previous injury that had not fully resolved, that had then been aggravated again, that was communicating its situation with the patient, insistent thoroughness of a body that had been ignored for too long.
Styrmir had looked at it.
He had said: "How long?"
"Yesterday." Gerffron said.
He had not said: Yesterday, I dodged my wife's slap and caught the ottoman.
"It's the same one," Styrmir said. Not a question.
"Yes."
He had begun bandaging.
He bandaged with the specific, careful attention of someone who had learned this skill properly rather than from theory — the compression even, the wrap angle correct, the pressure calibrated to the specific needs of the injury rather than a general standard.
Gerffron sat on the crate and watched his own ankle being bandaged and thought about nothing.
He was trying very hard to think about nothing.
He was having limited success.
Styrmir's fingers found the most swollen point.
Gerffron winced.
"Sorry," Styrmir said.
"It's fine."
He continued.
He finished the last wrap.
He looked at the ankle for a moment.
Then he bent forward and pressed his lips to the most swollen area.
It was brief — the specific, gentle briefness of something that was not asking for anything, that was only itself, that existed in the register of tenderness rather than desire.
Gerffron went very still.
"Don't," he said.
"I wasn't—"
"Don't," Gerffron said again. His voice was not cold. It was the voice of someone managing something. "Please."
Styrmir sat back.
He was still crouching.
He looked at Gerffron.
"How did it happen?" he said. "Actually."
"I told you, I—"
"You said you tripped. You said it in the carriage with the specific quality you use when you're covering for something that requires covering." He held Gerffron's gaze steadily. "How did it happen?"
Gerffron looked at the wall.
He said: "I stepped awkwardly on the ottoman. In the library."
"What were you doing in the library that produced stepping awkwardly on an ottoman?"
Gerffron said nothing.
Styrmir was quiet for a moment.
"You're protecting her again," he said.
"I'm not—"
"You're lying for her. To me. In a locked room." Styrmir's voice was still even. It was the kind of even that was not the absence of feeling but the management of it — the even of someone who cares enough to be careful. "You have been lying for her consistently. You have been making yourself smaller so she can be larger. You have been absorbing things that you should not be absorbing and covering them with a composure that is—"
He stopped.
He looked at his hands.
When he looked up, something had changed in his expression.
Not the warmth — the warmth was there, it was always there, it was the thing that Gerffron had been carrying in his memory for years and had confirmed, with the specific, destabilising completeness of seeing it in person, to be exactly what he remembered.
But something had moved through the warmth and had arrived somewhere more open.
"I have been—" Styrmir started.
He stopped.
He tried again.
"I have been thinking," he said carefully, "about how to say this correctly. I have been thinking about it for a long time. I have been thinking about it in Helwick and in Veldrath and on the ship and in the carriage and in the garden maze and in the corridor yesterday. I have been—" he looked at Gerffron directly "—I have had a very long time to think about it and I still don't have the version that says everything it needs to say without also saying things that are—" he stopped.
Gerffron was watching him.
"I love you," Styrmir said.
The storage room was very quiet.
The market sounds came through the small high window — the distant, living noise of people conducting their ordinary business in the summer morning.
"Not because you're—" Styrmir continued, his voice low and entirely steady, "not because of how you look, although I am not going to pretend that is irrelevant, because it isn't and I am not going to lie to you about something that trivial. Not because you're a specific kind of target — the married man, the unavailable man, the challenge. I have been offered those perspectives on what I feel and I know they are wrong."
He looked at Gerffron.
He looked at him with the winter-pale eyes that were his mother's eyes, that had been looking at things directly since before he could understand what he was looking at.
"I love you because you are the person who sat on a stone bench and opened a book and said nothing," he said, "and it was the least lonely I had ever been. I love you because you came through dungeon bars with food and books and the specific, extraordinary quality of treating me as if the dungeon did not define what I was. I love you because you read the law and understood what was happening and did something about it at a cost that you are still paying."
His voice was very even.
Not the managed even — not the professional composure he had been building for three years. The even that came from something that had been said so many times in private that it had arrived at its final form and no longer required effort to hold.
"I love you because of who you are," he said. "Not what you represent. Not what you can give me. Who you are. The specific quality of a person who looks at a situation and thinks: what is the right thing, and then does it, regardless of the cost, with the patient, unbothered certainty of someone who has decided what they stand for and has never needed to reconsider it."
Gerffron had not looked away.
He was looking at Styrmir with the full, direct attention that was his most honest register, and his eyes had the specific quality of eyes that are doing the thing that eyes did when they had been reached.
"Styrmir—" he started.
"I know," Styrmir said quietly. "I know the situation. I know what it is. I know you're married and I know what the marriage has been and I know what it costs you to leave it and I know—" he looked at his hands "—I know that you have reasons that are real and important and that none of them are small. I'm not asking you to dismiss any of them."
"Then what are you asking?"
Styrmir looked up.
"I'm asking you to know," he said. "I want you to know. Whatever you decide, wherever you land in all of this — I want you to know that there is a person in the world who looks at you and sees the whole of you. Not the version you've been managing in everyone else's rooms. The whole thing. And who finds it — who finds you—"
He stopped.
He was not going to use the words that were available.
The words that were available were too large for a storage room above a medical shop.
The words that were available would require a different room, a different occasion, a different version of everything.
But the feeling behind them was present.
It was completely present.
Gerffron's eyes were bright.
He pressed the back of his hand to them in the specific, impatient gesture he used when his eyes were doing something he hadn't authorised.
"We're both men," he said.
Styrmir looked at him.
"That's a—" Styrmir started.
"I know," Gerffron said. "I know it's a—"
"That is," Styrmir said, gently and completely, "the most profoundly inadequate reason you have ever given me for anything. And you have given me some inadequate reasons."
"It's a real reason."
"It's a true statement that you are using as a reason," Styrmir said. "A true statement is not automatically a reason. We are both breathing. We are both currently in a storage room. Neither of those are reasons for anything."
Gerffron looked at the floor.
He looked at the floor for a long time.
He thought about the east tower and two pebbles and twelve years of a specific, patient thing that had been growing in the dark.
He thought about what the body he was in responded to and what the soul inside the body responded to and the specific, increasingly impossible task of maintaining the distinction between those two things in the presence of this person.
He thought: I know and I don't know what to do with the knowing. I am twenty-six years old and I died once already and I never got to—. I never got to.
He thought—
The door opened.
A small face appeared in the doorway.
A boy of approximately seven years, with the round, curious face of a child who had been assigned to retrieve something from the storage room and had opened the door to find an unexpected situation.
He looked at Gerffron.
He looked at Styrmir.
He looked at the space between them.
He said, with the specific, unmediated directness of a seven-year-old who had not yet developed the social mechanism that prevented people from asking the question they actually wanted to ask:
"What are you two grown-ups doing in the storage room?"
Gerffron and Styrmir looked at each other.
Gerffron looked at the boy.
He said: "We got locked in."
The boy looked at the door.
He looked at them.
"The latch," he said, pointing at the specific mechanism on the door's inside, "sticks. You have to lift it and push."
He demonstrated.
The door opened perfectly.
He looked at them.
"Grown-ups are really bad at doors," he said.
He went to get whatever he had come for and left.
Gerffron and Styrmir sat in the open storage room in the summer morning light.
Gerffron looked at the door.
He looked at Styrmir.
He said: "The latch sticks."
"Yes," Styrmir said.
"We were in here for an hour."
"Yes."
"Because of a sticky latch."
"And a lift-and-push mechanism," Styrmir confirmed.
Gerffron looked at the ceiling.
He thought: this is my life.
He thought: this is specifically and precisely my life.
He stood up — carefully, with the boot back on and the bandaged ankle receiving his weight with the slightly improved quality of something that had been properly attended to.
He looked at Styrmir.
Styrmir looked at him.
Something had settled between them in the storage room — not resolved, not concluded, but settled in the specific way that things settled when they had been said aloud for the first time and had arrived in the world rather than only in the interior of one person.
"We should find the delegation," Gerffron said.
"Yes," Styrmir said.
He stood.
They went out into the summer market.
The noise hit them with the specific, full quality of a world that had been going on without them and had not noticed the pause.
Gerffron walked with the ankle supported by the bandage and by the specific, quietly present quality of someone walking beside him who was not offering his arm but who was positioned, with the natural accuracy of someone who has been attentive for a very long time, at exactly the angle from which support would be available if it was needed.
Gerffron did not need it.
They walked into the market.
