"Of course. And it seems to have — worked out. One does hear things, naturally. About the consort and the advisory consultant. The Bremen boy. They seem to have developed quite a — working relationship."
Gorgina held her glass.
"I haven't followed the delegation's interpersonal dynamics closely," she said.
"No, naturally, you've had your own responsibilities." Countess Varenne smiled the smile of a woman who had just filed something. "Lord Fethwick was saying, just before you arrived, that the Bremen boy is remarkably—"
"Your Excellency." Lord Fethwick himself appeared — a man of fifty-two with the specific, compact energy of someone who had been at court for decades and had long since stopped performing anything he didn't mean. He bowed to Gorgina with the correct depth and then straightened with the expression of a man who had something to say. Fethwick's expression did the thing expressions did when they had been redirected.

"Yes," Styrmir said.
"Is it," Gerffron said, and his voice had the specific quality of someone who has decided to ask a question and is doing so with the full, slightly terrifying commitment of a person who has gotten tired of not asking, "still valid?"
The dance moved them.
Styrmir looked at him.

"I was managing—"
"You were not managing. You were ignoring, which is a different activity." She held out her hand. "The dance, Consort Wadee."
He danced with her.
She was an excellent dancer — the kind of excellent that came from a lifetime of being at courts where dancing was not optional and where the quality of your presence on a dance floor was read as information about your character.
She danced with him like someone who was enjoying herself.
"He hasn't looked away," she said, as they moved through the second figure.
"I'm sorry?" Gerffron said.
"Styrmir," she said pleasantly. "Since we started dancing. He has been standing at the east wall with a cup of wine he has not drunk and he has been watching this dance with an expression I can only describe as—"
"Don't," Gerffron said.
"—intensely invested," she finished.
"Your Highness."
"His expression is the expression of a man who has made a very specific decision and is watching the person that decision concerns dance with someone else and is finding it—"
"Your Highness."
"—challenging," she said. "He's managing it well. But I have known him for three years and I know what his managing-it-well face looks like from across a room."
Gerffron looked at the correct focal point for the dance.
His face had, at some point in the past thirty seconds, done something that he was not entirely in control of.
"That is not information I needed," he said.
"I know," she said. "I'm giving it to you anyway because you are constitutionally incapable of asking for it yourself and someone needs to." She moved them through the third figure. "He counted two hundred and fifty days. From the inn. He told me." She looked at him directly for a moment. "Two hundred and fifty days, Gerffron. And he came here anyway. On a trade ship. In disguise."
Gerffron looked at the dance floor.
He thought: I know. I know all of this.
He said: "You are a very inconvenient person."
"I am the crown princess of Veldrath," she said cheerfully. "Being inconvenient when necessary is in the job description."
The dance ended.
Gerffron applauded with the room.
He looked, briefly, at the east wall.
Styrmir was looking at him.
He looked away.
The evening continued.
And Styrmir, standing at the east wall with his untouched wine, noticed — in the specific, attentive way he noticed everything — that one of the serving attendants near the wine station had moved through the room twice in the past twenty minutes without serving anything to anyone.
