Before his seclusion, Li Tongya often thought:
What is an Immortal Foundation?
The "Taiyin Breathing and Wheel Nourishing Scripture" states, "The brilliance of the Taiyin, harvested from the Vast Cold, the essence of the Taiyang, lies in gold. Blend these two qi to form the Immortal Foundation." Li Tongya felt that this was a secret revelation of the method for gathering the qi of Taiyin Moonlight and Taiyang Day Essence, with the so-called Immortal Foundation being a euphemism for a special Divine Skill.
Later, Li Tongya acquired the "River Qi Decision," which contained this sentence:
"The qi of the rivers is complete, sinking and floating in the great abyss; the qi of heaven and earth is clear and bright, flowing freely above and below. Transform the qi of heaven and earth into rivers and seas, seek one Taoist Foundation, called the 'Vast Sea.'"
