📍 Road from the Port | Morning
The forest didn't start. It had simply always been there, and the road was something that existed inside it on sufferance.
Trees rose on both sides taller than any tree Kiyoshi had a reference for — not the height of buildings but the height of presence, the kind of scale that makes a person instinctively quiet. The canopy above was a second sky, green and filtering, and the light that came through it moved differently from ordinary light. It found things. It seemed to have opinions about what it illuminated.
"This place is like a city inside a forest," Kiyoshi said.
"The other way around," Sakura said. "The forest is the city." She was reading the map and talking at the same time. "Three great trees at the centre. Those are the city — not trees the city is built around. Some elves can control, shape, and grow trees. The branches are floors. The trunk walls are carved into rooms. Half the shops are inside the wood itself, half outside. Bridges between branches, hanging walkways, structures that would take a human architect a year just to understand."
Kiyoshi looked up through the canopy at light that had no right to be that colour.
Then he looked at the elves moving through the paths ahead.
The elf girls are adorable, he thought, and immediately looked at something else.
"I know what you're thinking," Sakura said, without turning.
"I'm thinking about the architecture."
He looked at the trees.
"Why are there so few humans?" he asked.
Her expression shifted into something heavier. "Humans tried to enslave the elves. Civil war. The king banned elf slavery and made the crime punishable by death." A pause. "That was many years ago. The memory is longer than the law."
📍 The Main City of Elfior | An Hour Later
The gate was a root.
Kiyoshi hadn't processed that until he was standing under it — a single living arch, a fifty metres high, 30 metres wide, the curved surface of it ancient wood worn smooth by centuries of hands and weather. Not constructed. Grown. The Figon River encircled the entire city, its water clear enough to see the riverbed from the bridge above.
He walked through the gate and stopped on the other side.
The street inside was wide enough for twenty people to walk abreast. The ground was packed earth and woven root. The first tree they passed was the size of a city block — a building and a forest and something older than the concept of either, simultaneously.
"Hair colour tells you the type," Sakura said, as they moved through the streets. "Yellow and green — common elves, most of what you see. Dark elves have darker skin and specialize in wood magic and strength. Pink hair — royals. They have the traits of both common and dark, plus spirit magic." She paused. "Pure white would be pure-blood royals, but they've almost gone — evolved into pink over the last few thousand years. Some say it's because the elves displeased the goddess of the forest by turning her home into a city."
"Do the elves believe that?"
"Some do."
"What about mana?"
"Low for commons — fifty to two hundred. But they draw from living things around them. Common elf refills from empty in five to ten minutes. Spirit users — the royals — can refill in seconds, but only in places with enough life around them. A desert would cripple them." She looked up at the canopy. "Here they're never in danger."
Kiyoshi walked and listened and thought about a warrior named Jojikan Elfior who stood between burning trees and humans and waited for a goddess to notice.
"You learned all this from books?"
"Some." A small shift in her expression — private, slightly amused. "And other ways."
"What other—"
"Leave it." She stopped walking and checked the map. "The passage the witch marked is in the deep forest. We go through it, we reach Garion without the month of procedural delays."
📍 The Deep Forest — The Hidden Passage | Midday
The city noise faded behind them as they went deeper — until it was only trees and the distant sound of the Figon River and their own footsteps on ground that had never seen a paved road.
"I see nothing but trees," Sakura said.
Kiyoshi studied the map, then the angle of a root at the base of the nearest trunk. "There's a door. We need to say — amono akono."
He said the words.
A section of bark shifted along an invisible seam — no handle, no hinge. The door decided to be a door and swung inward with the sound of old wood settling into itself.
Sakura's dagger was out before the door finished opening. "Someone's here." Her weight dropped, voice went flat. "Who are—"
A shout from both sides. Movement — fast, coordinated, too fast.
The world tilted sideways.
📍 A Grand Hall | Later
Kiyoshi woke up vertical.
His head offered its opinion on this at length. He was in a chair — tied, he confirmed — in a room that was the most elaborate space he had been in since arriving in this world. White and gold and green on every surface, intricate without being cluttered. Knights in armour stood along both walls. At the far end, on seats that had the specific gravity of seats that mattered, sat a lord and his wife.
The lord was mid-forties by human measure — dark pink hair worn long, angular features, a careful beard. His eyes were pale and doing something precise when they looked at Kiyoshi. Reading. Finding the relevant line.
Beside Kiyoshi, Sakura was still unconscious. He checked. Breathing steady. Fine.
An armoured elf reported: "My lord. These were the intruders."
"We're not intruders," Kiyoshi said. His voice was clearer than his head felt. "We're adventurers. We came through the passage because the witch told us to — Galfi. The letter is in my inner pocket. Right side."
The room was quiet.
Lord Garion looked at him.
One of the knights freed his right hand. Kiyoshi produced the sealed letter slowly and held it out.
Garion took it. Read it. Something passed across his expression — recognition, then something that closed before it could be seen fully — and he reached a decision.
"Take them to the garden. Untie them."
📍 The Garden | Afternoon
The garden existed in a dimension of craft that required centuries to achieve. Paths of woven root wound between flowering beds at heights that had no equivalent anywhere else. The light came down green and layered.
They were met by a girl.
Small — a hundred and fifty centimetres. Pink hair in the afternoon light. White and green dress, gold necklace at her throat. She looked seventeen. She looked at them with the expression of someone who had been underestimated by taller people her entire life and had accumulated an exact understanding of how to respond to it.
"For the record," she said, before either of them could speak, "I am one hundred and four years old. You are the children in this conversation."
"We're very sorry, my lady." Kiyoshi bowed his head with complete sincerity.
Sakura bowed beside him.
"Come," the second princess said, and turned down the nearest path without waiting.
As they followed, Kiyoshi's attention caught on movement at the far end of the garden.
A figure training. Tall — a hundred and seventy centimetres, dark pink hair, moving through sequences with two circular blades suspended on thin strings. The blades moved in arcs that physics permitted but didn't recommend — controlled at the wrist and elbow, mana threaded through the strings with a precision that looked like something between combat and something older than combat.
[ Eye of Wisdom — Active ]
[ Name: Nanime Elfior ]
[ Rank: ***** ]
[ Type: ****** ]
He remembered the ranking board in the AMO building — Nanime Elfior, name carved deeper than the ones below it.
"S rank," he said quietly.
"I know," Sakura said. She was watching the blades with the focused attention she reserved for things she was studying without knowing she was studying them. "Leader of the Yamogi Gang. The strings are her weapon — mana through the thread, range and angle controlled at the joint." A pause. "It's efficient."
From Sakura, that word carried the weight of extraordinary.
The first princess didn't look over at them. The blades kept moving, catching the filtered light in slow and lethal arcs.

World Archive: Entries Relevant to Chapter Twelve
ENTRY 048 — ON ELFIOR: THE CITY
The city of Elfior is built within and around the Three Great Trees — ancient growth of a scale that has no parallel in human architecture. The trees serve as foundation, wall, floor, and ceiling simultaneously. The city is not built inside the forest. The forest is the city.
The Figon River encircles the entire settlement. The main gate is formed from the end of a root — a single arch of living wood, approximately 50 metres high and 30 metres wide.
ENTRY 049 — ELF CLASSIFICATION BY HAIR COLOUR
Yellow/Green — common elves. Flexibility, precision, wind magic. Primary weapon: bow.
Dark (darker skin) — dark elves. Greater strength. Wood magic.
Pink — royal elves. Traits of both common and dark, plus spirit magic. MP up to 300.
White (near-extinct) — pure-blood royals. Full elf abilities at maximum strength, plus forest spirit summoning. Evolved into pink over the last several 100s of years.
Average elf lifespan: 600 years.
ENTRY 050 — ELF MANA AND REFILL
Common elves: 50–200 MP. Draw from living things to refill — 5 to 10 minutes from empty.
Royal (pink): MP similar to humans, up to 300. Can also draw from living things but slower than spirit users.
Spirit users (advanced/white): near-instant refill in vegetated areas. Severely limited in barren environments.
ENTRY 051 — THE ORIGIN OF ELF TYPES
In the oldest recorded period, all elves had yellow hair. During the first human invasion, a warrior named Jojikan Elfior defended the burning forest until the goddess Fiyo answered. She granted spiritual power to all who fought, scaled to their role. Hair colours shifted to reflect the gift received.
Jojikan received everything — white hair, the ability to summon five forest spirits, the title Apotheosis of Fiyo. He became the first Elf King.
The shift from white to pink hair over the last few thousand years is attributed by some to the elves displeasing Fiyo by building a city and inviting humans inside her sacred forest.
ENTRY 052 — ON NANIME ELFIOR
First princess of the Elfior family. S rank. Assassin-type.
Leader of the Yamogi Gang — the same gang whose recruiter approached Sakura in Chapter 4.
Weapon: twin circular blades on mana-threaded strings. Sustained by continuous low-level mana output at the wrist and elbow. Not mechanical.
ENTRY 053 — ON LORD GARION ELFIOR
Head of the Elfior family, the Elfior noble house. Recipient of Galfi's letter.
The contents of the letter were not disclosed. His reaction to reading it suggested prior knowledge of Galfi and the nature of their connection. Neither has been explained.
