He was her world and everyday song.
After they met last year and went out on more than a few dates, she finally agreed they were meant for each other.
Her rich socialites had kicked against the idea. Katie, Sharon, and Luke.
"Why would the heir of Alpha be seen frolicking with a common?"
Mr Barnett couldn't stand the sight of him either. In his opinion, Kingsley was just like most people from the lower class, gold diggers who needed help to advance their careers.
Resolute, she refused vehemently for that to be a determining factor. Although her prayers consisted of nothing more than a few words, while adding the Name of Jesus to back up her lack of knowledge, it was the first time she at least consulted a Deity higher than herself concerning issues of the opposite sex.
Though she never said anything about it on her social media page, somehow the paparazzi had managed to take shots of them. Luckily, his face never reflected in the photos. The last thing she wanted was interviews and endless questions from the media hounding and messing up his simple life.
The gossip faded away after some time as more scandals emerged. In the media world, every day there was something new to chitchat, someone else to tear apart, an organization to be brought down. It was a never-ending cycle.
Somehow, Mr Barnett thought the relationship will fade with the gossip. Instead, like a seed planted in a fruitful soil, it blossomed into a fresh budding flower. With Kingsley, she had created memories that couldn't be erased.
Undeniably, she had her initial doubts. They were from different worlds. While she was born into wealth and affluence and from her early years been exposed to the world, her heartthrob had the opposite experience. Born into a family where he never knew his father, all he had was a caring mother whose daily goal was to feed her family without any confident source for the next day's meal.
Despite all these, Kingsley was a true lover. Distinguished and different, he stood out from her previous relationships. Maybe the hardships he faced made him wiser. He approached things meticulously, with a great sense of responsibility.
She had dated a few times here and there, wealthy people, most of them, celebrities. In college, she had someone special every session. Her final semester had been catastrophic, when she broke up with Denzel, he left also with her identity.
Most of them camouflaged their reputation. Their everyday living paled in comparison to the lifestyles portrayed on magazine covers. Proud rich brats who had nothing to offer other than money and fame. Worse still, domineering and narcissistic.
Time had taught her that there were other things necessary that made marriages work. After all, the increasing rates of divorce proved that it was more than a fleeting attraction, a charming smile, and a built body.
She looked for something different. She desired love and affection. Something along the lines of truth and commitment.
Though she didn't have 100% relationship with God and accurate knowledge of Christianity, she could at least distinguish what was right from wrong. She had attended church regularly as a kid. Many thanks to late Mrs Barnett.
So when Kingsley came calling, a gentle boy from a humble background, she knew it was the right thing to do- take a leap of faith!
He worked in a restaurant downtown and she often had to disguise herself to spend a few hours with him. It was worth it. Jovial as usual, he made her laugh and momentarily she would forget the worries of the future, basking only in the joy that he offered.
Alpha and life, in general, had made her guarded, selective about her friends and close associates. With him, she had opened up. Though not loosely, but enough to show she was in love with his personality.
Later, she discovered it wasn't just her but he cared about everyone too. Love was his language, second only to attending church services.
For her, getting married to a believer was also a top priority. With the world already mucked up, she wanted someone who had great reverence for the things of God. Her reason was simple- He would never cheat.
This evening would be a time of celebration, an opportunity to relax and be intimate, away from the world and its struggles. She didn't know the plans he had but she knew he must have gone into details trying to put it all together. She recollected the red velvet shoulder body gown she selected for the occasion and her detailed preparations.
Nevertheless, she didn't mind if it was simple or something out of the ordinary. All she looked forward to was the love and the promises that will be made. Perharps they might share their first kiss. Kingsley had indicated at the beginning of their relationship, his stance on purity.
Hopefully, he will let down his guard for a moment. Her flesh tingled.
She looked out of the window as Smart drove into Alpha Estate. The Billionaire Estate only housed 30 families among whom was the former CEO of Evolve as well as some top celebrities in performing arts, television, and football.
"7 pm. Not a minute should be wasted" She instructed Smart, alighting immediately.
She switched on her phone to check the time. It was a few minutes past 3. She took long strides to her room waving to the maids as they chorused their greetings. She was in no mood for lunch.
"A proper shower and rest will suffice for the aches," She thought pulling off her earrings as her phone beeped. It was from her one and only.
Plopping on the bed, she caught sight of her animated reflection in the adjacent mirror.
She flipped through the icons. Her smile faltered. She stared at the words before her.
"Sorry, Sweetie, mummy just fainted and I am rushing her to the hospital. We might have to cancel our date"
