Kui waited anxiously on the bed, his back pressed against the old wooden headboard as he listened to the sounds coming from outside the room.
The house was quiet enough that every little noise reached him. Floorboards creaked somewhere beyond the door. Something scraped against the ground outside, followed by footsteps crossing the hall. Each time they came closer, his body tensed.
He hated this.
He hated sitting here unable to do anything, hated the lingering weakness in his limbs, and most of all, hated not knowing what was happening to Aok.
By now, Aok should have woken up.
At least, Kui desperately hoped he had.
The drug Guilin had put in their food had been strong enough to keep Kui unconscious for most of the journey. Even after waking in this damned house, his head still felt heavy and his limbs weren't completely steady. Aok had eaten more than him. What if he was still lying there? What if something had happened while he was unconscious?
