Chapter 40 - Between Heartbeats.

The infirmary was quiet.

Moonlight filtered through tall windows, painting soft silver across polished floors and rows of beds. Healers had left only minutes ago, confident both finalists would recover with rest though the scorch marks and shattered stone in the arena said otherwise.

Max lay staring at the ceiling, chest wrapped lightly in mana-thread cloth. Every muscle ached, but it was a good ache.

A soft exhale sounded from the bed beside him.

Victoria.

She shifted, blinking awake. The light from the moon caught her dark black and bright blonde hair, and even exhausted, she carried that same sharp poise though now, for once, it wasn't armor.

Just rawfully her.

"You alive?" Max asked quietly.

She didn't look at him just stared upward like speaking took effort.

"Barely," she murmured. "You?"

"Same."

Silence settled between them not awkward

Just… full.

Max turned his head toward her.

"You fought differently today," he said.

Victoria breathed out a tired laugh. "So did you."

He nodded.

Suddenly

The air pulsed not physically, but within.

Max felt Raven stir.

Not with her usual sarcastic amusement.

With interest.

[So this is the one tied to the flame.]

Victoria inhaled sharply.

Max froze.

"You… heard that?"

She turned her head toward him—eyes glowing faintly, unnaturally.

"No," she whispered. "Heard what?"

"Nothing. I'm probably just over thinking things."

A presence vast, ancient unfurled behind her gaze. Heat rolled through the air, not burning, but royal. The temperature in the room shifted.

And then a voice deep, resonant, old as mountain fire spoke through Victoria's mouth as her eyes no longer looked like hers.

"Raven."

Raven's presence sharpened—no longer a whisper, but a figure made of shadow and memory, towering inside Max's mind.

[ScarLite.]

The flame dragon king's spiritual aura pressed forward.

"I did not expect a demon hybrid like you to ever be set free again."

Raven laughed.

Just amused.

[And I did not expect you chained inside a mortal girl like a pet.]

Victoria's body tensed not in pain, but in defiance. Fire rippled under her skin.

"She is not a vessel." Scarlight growled. "If she lives or inherits my legacy is up to her. She will soon reach other realms one day."

Raven hummed.

[Impressive choice. Her flame carries your pride.]

Silence.

Then unexpectedly

"…And your human carries your arrogance."

ScarLite countered.

Max blinked.

"Hey—I'm right here. I can hear you both since you know I'm not possessed."

Neither entity acknowledged him.

Raven's voice lowered not threatening, but edged with something ancient.

[Our souls touched during the clash. Briefly but enough.]

"Enough to know you still exist."

[Enough to recognize your flame.]

Victoria exhaled shakily—not frightened, just overwhelmed.

Max reached toward her—instinctive, steady. She didn't pull away. For what remained of her consciousness that was there.

Raven's tone shifted no longer amused.

Cold. Ancient.

[Listen carefully, ScarLite.]

The room darkened not literally, but spiritually—like the shadows were paying attention.

[If you or any of your lesser flames harm the girl to strengthen yourself or try to possess her body to break free of the infernal realm you all live in. If you ever treat her as a tool instead of a partner—]

The air vibrated with a force that felt like stars collapsing.

[I will tear your legacy from every bloodline that remembers you.]

Even ScarLite paused.

Not afraid.

But respectful.

Like a king acknowledging another ruler.

"…You speak boldly, Demon Queen."

[Only when it matters.]

A long silence stretched fire and shadow holding still.

Finally, Scarlight spoke again—quieter, contemplative.

"She is valuable to me. I'll remember what you've said here today considering we used to fight together in the past."

[Good. Keep it that way.]

Victoria blinked and the ancient presence receded, slipping back into her soul like a tide going out.

She sagged back into the pillow, breathing hard but alive.

Max watched her carefully.

"You okay?"

She swallowed.

"I… think so. Just—processing."

Max nodded slowly.

"Same."

They lay in silence again, the tension fading into something softer something unspoken but understood.

"Max?" Victoria murmured.

"Yeah?"

"…Next time," she whispered, eyes half-lidded, "I will win."

Max smiled gentle, exhausted.

"I'll look forward to it."

Raven purred.

[So will I.]

Victoria's breathing slowed, steadying as sleep claimed her.

Max closed his eyes too.

Two warriors.

Two spirits.

One undeniable, dangerous connection.

The academy had no idea what it had just witnessed.

And neither did the world beyond its walls.
