Chapter 25 - The Stakes

Kai woke up on a cold, hard steel table. He laid in the center of a dark room, his helmet in the corner. In his vision, yet nowhere close to being in reach. He was tied down. "Ron..?" He said weakly. "Ron, you in here?" Silence. He looked around, but there was no one in the room besides him. No one except for a guard standing in front of his helmet, holding a rifle. "Sir, where am I?" The only response Kai got was a dead stare. "Could you at least tell me the date?" Still nothing. Kai laid there, worried about two things: the whereabouts of his brother and what would happen to himself. He heard footsteps coming from one of the walls. He looked to his right, in the direction of the footsteps, and the wall opened. Walking out of it was Zynner. Kai could tell by his distinct haircut. "What the hell did you do to me? Why am I tied up? Where's-" "Silence. Ron? Couldn't tell you. I didn't feel the need to track him down." Kai's eyes were glued to the ceiling, thoughts rushing through his mind. He couldn't focus on one particular thought, because when he did, five more came to him. "Look, I'll show you some pity by giving you a couple of basic bits of information. It has been six months since that fight. In that time, the world has learned to bow to their master. That guard in the corner? He was your neighbor." The guard looked away from the two, guilt weighing his head down. "I could tell you more, but come on. What more would be useful?" Zynnner chuckled. "Now, you two have fun. I've got a call to make."

Crystal knocked on the door of Klint's cabin. "Hello, welcom- GET BACK!" Klint's arm turned into a sword and it swiftly lined up with Crystal's neck. "Woah, at ease." Crystal said with a chuckle. "I'm an ally of Ron. Crystal. We've known each other for a while now." Klint's arm reverted to its normal state. "Oh, so you're that Crystal person he's talked about. Just didn't expect you to be one of… them." "Yeah, well I am. It's fine though, I'm not here for another war, I just need to speak with Ron. Is he in there?" Klint nodded. "The boy's in his zone right now, good luck snapping him out of it. Once he gets to training, there isn't much that'll distract him. He's been going at it lately, ever since his brother went missing." Crystal tried to stay collected, but her heart felt a slight ache. She couldn't help but feel bad. She, sadly, could relate. She saw herself in Ron. "Right this way." Klint led Crystal to the wall where the training room hid. With his hand print, the wall shifted open. "Woah, did… did you build that?" "Yup! Only took a week. Basic stuff." Crystal was impressed. Sure, things like that were normal on her planet, but she was surprised to see such casual usage of advanced technology on Earth. "Ron? You've got a guest." Ron punched away the level seven dummy to end the training swiftly. It's head flew off and collided with the wall. His eyes lit up for a moment, a smile almost escaped his mouth, all from the small hope of seeing Kai again. Alas, however, he was disappointed by the sight of anyone rather than his brother. His joy went back into hiding. "Hey Crystal." Ron said with a slightly rough voice. Anger still surged through him, which he was channeling during training, but now needed to be tranquilized. "I heard about your brother." Ron's eyes darted towards those of Crystal. The mere mention of Kai form the mouth of another got his blood boiling, but he calmed himself. "Jeez man, I didn't do anything. In fact, I came here today in hopes of planning with you to find him. But if you don't want to, then tha-" "Sure, let's sit down." Ron interrupted Crystal with a weird sense of calm. One that was the last thing Crystal expected from him.

"So how did you hear about it?" "You didn't know? Zynner has been broadcasting his victory all over the galaxy, trying to intimidate other life forms into submitting. Six months ago, he announced that he captured King Kai, and that you were no longer willing to fight him. Apparently, Earth is under his regime now, right?" Ron angrily clenched his fist, knowing that it was all true. "S-sorry. I… didn't mean to rub it in." Crystal said, astonished that she would go so far in detail. She knew that Ron was aware of the state of the world. "Anyways, I've been meaning to discuss a plan with you. First, do you have any idea where he could be keeping him?" "Not really… and it's not like I can go out and check. He's got millions on my head right now, in case he hasn't bragged about that too. Some old man could pop me the second I step out." It wasn't like this just a few months ago. "Man, Kai was right. I wish things were how they used to be. Damn it…" Crystal lifted Ron's defeated head back up. "He'll be okay. He'll get out of there. That is our priority right now, is it not?" Ron sheepishly nodded. "If you'd like, we can get some help from back home and we'll do a proper search for potential locations." "Good idea." Crystal began to walk out. "But…" she turned back around. "How am I going to leave this cabin? This planet? I'm wanted across the galaxy at this point!" "No worries. I've got something just for you." She gave Ron a pin. "What's this supposed to do? Highlight the fact that I'm enemy number one?" "Just press on it." Ron did, and a mech suit resembling the body of a Iltzo, the species Crystal is a member of, transformed him.
