The Addams family had not actually planned to stop at the restaurant.
Half an hour earlier,
They had been on their way to an important family gathering, one that had required them to travel all the way to Los Angeles.
Gomez had been happily discussing the event while Fester occasionally interrupted with completely unnecessary suggestions about what sort of explosives would make the gathering more memorable.
Everything had been perfectly normal by Addams standards.
Then Wednesday had suddenly lifted her head from the back seat.
"Stop the car."
Gomez glanced at her through the rear-view mirror.
"My darling, we've only just started moving again."
"Stop."
There was something different in her voice.
Gomez immediately braked.
The car came to a smooth halt.
Morticia turned toward her daughter.
"Something has caught your attention?"
Wednesday didn't answer.
She was staring through the window.
Her eyes had settled on something several buildings away.
Nero, her pet scorpion, crawled from beneath her coat and onto her gloved hand.
Wednesday opened the door.
"I'm going out."
Gomez looked at Morticia.
Morticia looked at Gomez.
Neither questioned her.
They simply followed.
Fester jumped out next.
Pugsley came along as well, mostly because he didn't want to miss whatever had managed to interrupt Wednesday's plans.
The family followed her through the street until they reached the restaurant.
What happened next was what truly caught their attention.
Wednesday didn't walk inside immediately.
She stood outside for several seconds, watching through the window.
Her gaze was fixed on a young man sitting at one of the tables.
Jojo.
Morticia noticed it.
Wednesday wasn't simply observing him.
She was studying him.
Then Wednesday quietly released Nero onto the pavement.
The scorpion disappeared beneath a table outside before eventually making its way into the restaurant.
Gomez raised an eyebrow.
"My little death flower..."
Morticia looked at her daughter carefully.
"Are you deliberately sending Nero to approach someone?"
Wednesday gave no answer.
"...."
That alone was an answer.
Gomez's smile widened.
"This is unusual."
"Very."
"Wednesday rarely approaches strangers."
Morticia's expression became thoughtful.
"She doesn't."
She watched her daughter through the restaurant window.
"Not unless she has a reason."
Fester leaned forward.
"So either the boy is incredibly interesting..."
He paused.
"...or Wednesday has finally decided to begin collecting people."
Pugsley looked at him.
"Can she do that?"
"Your sister has been collecting strange things since childhood."
"Fair point."
But Morticia wasn't listening anymore.
Something about the young man's face had begun bothering her.
She stared through the glass.
"...."
The dark hair. The shape of his face. The eyes.
That particular expression he wore when he wasn't speaking.
She had seen that face before.
Not in person.
But somewhere much stranger.
Morticia's eyes widened slightly.
"Wait."
Gomez turned toward her.
"My love?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked toward Wednesday.
Then back at Jojo.
A memory surfaced.
Wednesday's bedroom...
One of the many handmade dolls she had created over the years.
There had been one particular doll that had caught Morticia's attention.
It wasn't pretty. It wasn't intended to be.
Wednesday had fashioned it out of old fabric, stuffing, thread, and whatever other materials she had found lying around.
The face had been drawn crudely.
Yet the resemblance was unmistakable.
The same dark hair.
The same facial structure.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
Wednesday had used the doll whenever she needed to relieve frustration.
A knife had been driven through its chest more times than Morticia cared to count.
Sometimes it was an axe.
Once, Morticia distinctly remembered finding it pinned to the wall with several antique nails.
At the time, she had simply assumed it was another one of Wednesday's unusual coping mechanisms.
But now...
Morticia looked at Jojo again.
Her expression slowly changed.
"Gomez..."
Her husband turned toward her.
"Yes?"
"Do you remember that doll Wednesday made?"
Gomez thought for a moment.
"The one she stabbed?"
"The one she stabbed repeatedly."
"Ah."
He smiled.
"Yes."
Morticia pointed subtly toward Jojo.
"Look at his face."
Gomez's eyes followed hers.
For the first time, his cheerful expression faded into genuine surprise.
He stared through the restaurant window.
Then back at Morticia.
Then toward Wednesday.
"That's..."
He paused.
"...the same face."
Morticia nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Fester leaned between them.
"Are you saying Wednesday made a voodoo doll of that fellow before meeting him?"
Morticia shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became quieter.
"That's what concerns me."
She had seen the doll.
She knew exactly when Wednesday had made it.
Long before today. Long before this trip.
Long before anyone in their family had heard Jojo's name.
Which meant Wednesday had somehow drawn the face of a person she had never knowingly met.
Gomez's eyes brightened again.
Instead of looking frightened...
He looked fascinated.
"My darling..."
He whispered.
"I believe our daughter may have been waiting for him."
Morticia watched Wednesday carefully.
Their daughter was standing beside Jojo now, casually holding Nero while speaking to him.
Wednesday's expression remained composed.
But Morticia knew her daughter better than anyone.
That tiny smile...
The unusual willingness to speak...
The fact that she had deliberately engineered a reason to approach him...
Those were not coincidences.
Wednesday had recognized something.
Perhaps not consciously.
Perhaps she didn't even understand what it meant yet.
But somewhere inside her mind...
She had already connected Jojo to that strange image she had drawn years ago.
Morticia slowly smiled.
"Perhaps."
Gomez's smile returned.
"I knew this trip was going to be interesting."
Fester grinned.
"I knew it the moment Wednesday stopped the car."
Pugsley looked toward the restaurant.
"So... Does this mean we're staying?"
Wednesday suddenly turned toward them.
"I can hear you."
The entire family went silent.
Gomez smiled innocently.
"We were merely discussing the weather."
Wednesday looked at the completely clear section of sky above them.
"...Of course you were."
Then she turned back toward Jojo.
Morticia watched her daughter for another moment.
The strange feeling in her chest remained.
She couldn't explain why Wednesday had drawn that face.
She couldn't explain why the girl had suddenly become interested in him.
And she certainly couldn't explain why, after all these years, the person from that little handmade doll had somehow appeared directly in front of them.
But Morticia knew one thing.
Whatever connection existed between Wednesday and Jojo...
It had started long before either of them realized it then she remembered the mate bond which Wednesday got herself during her childhood.
'Could it be with him...'
Morticia thought looking at the young man.
Wednesday turned the black visiting card over between her fingers, studying every detail of it as though it were evidence in an investigation rather than a simple business card.
Her eyes moved slowly across the printed name, then down to the DMC title and finally to the contact information at the bottom.
She read every word without saying anything, her expression remaining almost completely blank.
Then she lifted her eyes toward Jojo.
"Jojo."
It wasn't really a question.
It sounded more like she was confirming the identity of a suspect.
Jojo raised an eyebrow.
"That's me."
Wednesday looked back at the card for another second before asking,
"So if we encounter a supernatural case, we can contact you?"
There was something about the way she phrased it that made Jojo feel as though he had just unknowingly agreed to something.
He glanced briefly toward Morticia, Gomez, and the rest of the family.
Gomez was smiling.
Morticia was watching the exchange with an expression that suggested she already understood something Jojo didn't.
Fester looked positively entertained.
Pugsley, meanwhile, seemed more interested in the scorpion still sitting comfortably on Wednesday's hand.
Jojo looked back at Wednesday.
"Yes."
He shrugged.
"If you run into something supernatural that you can't handle, give me a call."
Wednesday nodded slowly.
"Good."
Her eyes dropped to the card once more.
"I'll remember that."
Jojo gave her a slightly amused look.
"I figured you would."
For the first time, Wednesday's expression changed noticeably.
A small smile appeared.
Not the faint, almost accidental smile she had shown earlier.
This one was deliberate.
Almost as though she had just confirmed something she had already suspected.
She slipped the visiting card carefully into the inner pocket of her black coat.
"Then..."
She paused.
"...I suppose I'll see you again."
Jojo frowned slightly.
"You sound pretty confident about that."
Wednesday's smile widened by the tiniest amount.
"I usually am."
She turned around and began walking back toward her family.
After taking a few steps, she stopped and glanced over her shoulder.
"Until then, Jojo."
Then she continued walking.
Jojo remained standing there for a moment, watching her disappear into the Addams family.
Leah quietly came to stand beside him.
"Did you just exchanged contact information with that wired young girl?"
Jojo looked at her.
"It just a visiting card..."
Lorraine glanced toward Wednesday.
"She definitely has something on her mind."
Jojo sighed.
"...probably you are over thinking it."
Across the restaurant, Gomez was already enthusiastically talking to Morticia while Fester laughed about something.
Wednesday simply walked between them, her expression calm.
But one hand remained inside her coat.
Her fingers rested against the visiting card.
And beneath that composed expression was the unmistakable satisfaction of someone whose plan had gone exactly the way she wanted.
