Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: She Has a Child

Nathan Fawcett liked to be alone. Although Anne Sutton was at the Fawcett residence to take care of him, he didn't like her being with him except at mealtimes and bedtime.

Her role, after all, was just a means to an end.

To cook for him and, while she was at it, bear him a child. That was all.

Anne Sutton left Nathan Fawcett's place, planning to make a trip home. She had plenty of time, so it wouldn't be an issue.

Just then, she ran into Sylvia Warren coming out of Charles Prescott's house.

Seeing Anne Sutton, she said, "Well, if it isn't Dr. Sutton? Are you heading out?"

Anne Sutton replied, "Do you think I want to talk to you?"

'So passive-aggressive!'

Anne Sutton had no desire to engage with her.

The sight of Sylvia Warren now made her stomach turn.

Yesterday, she'd had no choice in front of everyone, but seeing Sylvia Warren again now, she genuinely felt like throwing up.

Sylvia Warren said, "Why are you so angry? It's not like I wanted to get pregnant. I didn't expect it either! If you're so unhappy about it, you can get pregnant with Mr. Prescott's child, too."

"No, thanks," Anne Sutton said. "Only you would treasure a stud like him. I have no interest in him."

Sylvia Warren laughed. "You have no interest in him? Then what are you so angry about? And why are you looking at me like you can't stand the sight of me?"

"I can't stand the sight of you because you schemed against me at the hospital the other day, deliberately setting a trap for me. You used such dirty tricks. What, did you expect me to speak to you nicely?"

Sylvia Warren said, "How you speak to me doesn't matter. But... I just want to remind you, if you're trying to get Mr. Prescott's attention this way, it's useless. I'm carrying his child now. Why would he punish me just for you? Don't think so highly of yourself!"

She still remembered how Anne Sutton had gotten angry at the hospital that day because Charles Prescott hadn't punished her.

"You're the one who thinks too highly of herself." It was one thing for Charles Prescott to talk to her like that, but Anne Sutton never expected this woman…

...to actually mimic Charles Prescott's tone and speak to her in the same way.

Sylvia Warren said to Anne Sutton, "I originally thought Ms. Sutton was a smart woman, but now I see you're pretty foolish. Who would give up the status of Mrs. Prescott to become Mr. Fawcett's fiancée? After all, everyone knows Mr. Fawcett is in poor health. Who knows how many days he has left? Doing this out of spite is just pointless."

Anne Sutton gave a soft laugh. The smile was breathtaking. She wasn't a peerless, stunning beauty in the classical sense, but when she smiled, her looks were instantly elevated.

"Will saying all this to me make Charles Prescott like you any more? I doubt it. Without this child, I imagine you'd be nothing at all."

She knew Charles Prescott all too well.

It didn't matter that Sylvia Warren was just pregnant. Even if they really got married, had a baby, and started a family, Charles Prescott would never settle down.

To him, the more women he had around, the more it seemed to prove his own prowess.

The value of a woman was merely to prove how successful he was as a man.

As for love, he couldn't care less about it.

Sylvia Warren retorted, "But I have this child now, don't I?"

"Then I hope you and the child in your belly both stay safe and sound."

As Anne Sutton said this, she turned to leave, but Sylvia Warren walked right up and grabbed her. "What do you mean by that?"

Seeing her grab her arm, Anne Sutton said, "What's this? Are you trying to stage an accident?"

"Apologize to me!" Sylvia Warren demanded. "You can disrespect me, but this child belongs to the Prescott Family. What did you mean by what you just said? You're hoping something happens to my child, aren't you?"

'...' 'She's clearly just trying to pick a fight!'

Anne Sutton said, "If you were smart, you'd stay far away from me. A pregnant woman getting into a physical struggle with me like this... you'll be the one to lose out."

"If I lose this baby, Mr. Prescott won't let you off the hook. He'll never like you again. No matter what tricks you pull, he won't even give you a second glance."

From his words last night, she could tell that Charles Prescott still had Anne Sutton in his heart.

So, it would be good if she could truly make him give up on Anne Sutton for good.

"What, you really want to test that theory?" Anne Sutton raised an eyebrow, glancing at Sylvia Warren.

Sylvia Warren had only meant to scare her and would never actually gamble with her own child. But seeing the look in Anne Sutton's eyes, she was startled and instinctively let go.

She took two steps back and stumbled, falling directly to the ground.

She cried out.

Just then, someone came out.

Charles Prescott saw this and walked over. "Vera."

Sylvia Warren looked at Charles Prescott, grabbed his hand, and said, "Darling, she pushed me."

Charles Prescott glanced at Anne Sutton, then his gaze fell on Sylvia Warren. He reached out, helped Sylvia Warren up, and said to his assistant beside him, "Help her back inside."

Sylvia Warren said, "Darling, you have to stand up for me. She tried to harm our child! My stomach is already hurting."

Charles Prescott said, "Don't worry, of course I'll stand up for you. Go on now."

Anne Sutton stood to the side, coldly watching the scene unfold. Back at the hospital, she had wanted to explain herself, but now, seeing Sylvia Warren's clumsy ploy, she no longer felt the need. In fact, it felt completely pointless.

After all, she no longer cared if Charles Prescott misunderstood her.

Once Sylvia Warren had left, Charles Prescott's gaze finally fell on Anne Sutton. "Did you provoke her on purpose?"

"Do you think I would?" Anne Sutton said. "I wasn't interested in her before, I'm not interested in your women, and I'm even less interested in them now."

Charles Prescott looked at her and said, "Even if you did it, if you admit it, I'll still forgive you."

His words sounded so magnanimous.

'That's his child we're talking about!'

'He means that even if I intended to harm the child, he would forgive me?'

'Right...'

He saw the squabbles between women as nothing more than a testament to his own charm.

Why would he be angry?

Anne Sutton said, "I didn't do it, so your forgiveness is unnecessary. Besides... you should be calling me 'Aunt' now! Just a moment ago, Nathan Fawcett and I officially registered our marriage!"

Just last night, he'd said she was too impatient, that she wasn't qualified.

'What does he have to say now!'

Charles Prescott said, "I know. Nathan Fawcett also said that if you give birth to a child, that child will become the heir to the Fawcett Family."

'...' 'He certainly hears things fast.'

She had just signed the marriage agreement with Nathan Fawcett, and by the time she'd stepped out the door, he already knew everything!

Anne Sutton said, "You even know that."

"There's nothing about the Fawcett Family that I don't know," he said, full of confidence, as if the entire Fawcett Family was already under his control.

Anne Sutton said, "Since you know, then you should also understand that I'm not afraid of you anymore. I'm going to do just fine and do my best to give birth to my husband's child. Charles Prescott, you think you're so great, don't you? You think the Fawcett Family belongs to you! But not anymore! For the simple fact that you tried to give my sister to Nathan Fawcett, I will never let you inherit anything from the Fawcett Family."
