Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Tyrant

'He wouldn't let her leave before, and now, great, he had to drive her home.'

At that thought, Sylvia Warren wished she could burn a hole through Anne Sutton's back with her glare.

Downstairs, Charles Prescott's car arrived, and the driver opened the door for him.

When Anne Sutton was with him before, she always sat in the back with him.

However…

Things were different now!

He had someone else by his side.

So she tactfully sat in the front passenger seat.

Charles Prescott didn't miss this detail. Seeing her action, he paused, as if only then remembering that their relationship was a thing of the past.

Soon, the car started, and Anne Sutton sat silently in the front.

Sylvia Warren, sitting beside Charles Prescott, noticed he was staring at Anne Sutton, seemingly lost in thought. She took the initiative to wrap her arms around his and said, "Honey."

Charles Prescott glanced up at her and asked, "What did you just call me?"

"Honey!" Sylvia Warren had always called him that before, and he never seemed to mind.

She found it strange that he was suddenly making an issue of what she called him.

Charles Prescott said, "Don't call me that anymore."

With that, he lifted his arm, pulling it from her grasp.

Sylvia Warren froze, staring at Charles Prescott in disbelief. 'What... what is this supposed to mean?'

'Is it because Anne Sutton is here?'

'He's actually putting distance between us!'

However, she knew Charles Prescott's personality well enough not to argue. She simply fell exceptionally quiet.

Anne Sutton sat in the passenger seat, bored, scrolling through her social media feed.

Charles Prescott sat in the back, his eyes fixed on her the entire time.

When they reached the Fawcett estate, the car stopped at the gate. Anne Sutton got out, and the butler, who was already waiting there, hurried over.

"Madam, you're finally back!"

Any later and Nathan Fawcett would have lost his temper.

Ever since Anne Sutton arrived, Nathan Fawcett had been eating and sleeping well these past few days, and his attitude toward the staff hadn't been as bad.

But when he lost his temper, he could turn the entire house upside down. Everyone was terrified of him.

The butler saw Charles Prescott and said, "Mr. Prescott."

Charles Prescott asked, "Where's my uncle?"

"He's inside."

Charles Prescott said to Sylvia Warren, "You can head back. I'm going to go see my uncle."

Sylvia Warren said, "Okay."

She wanted to say she'd go with him, but she was a little afraid of Nathan Fawcett.

Since coming to stay with Charles Prescott, she had heard the maids mention Nathan Fawcett's terrible temper more than once. That, combined with how intimidating she found him during their last meeting, made her decide it wasn't worth the trouble.

Anne Sutton got out of the car and went straight to see Nathan Fawcett.

Charles Prescott followed behind her.

As the two of them reached the doorway, they heard the sound of a cup smashing on the floor inside.

Anne Sutton jumped. 'Tsk, is he really this terrifying?'

'I was only a little late getting back.'

Charles Prescott stood to the side, glanced at Anne Sutton, and said, "So this is the man you like."

'An absolute tyrant!'

Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott, realizing he was gloating at her misfortune, and said, "He's still better than you."

With that, she pushed aside her fear and walked straight through the door.

Nathan Fawcett was sitting on the sofa while a maid cleaned up the shards on the floor.

When he saw Anne Sutton walk in, his cold gaze fell upon her face. "Where have you been?"

Anne Sutton said, "I had to work overtime, so I'm late."

Nathan Fawcett said, "From now on, you're not to go to work anymore!"

Hearing his words, the corner of Anne Sutton's mouth twitched.

'He won't even let me have my own job?'

She was a smart woman; she wasn't going to argue with Nathan Fawcett right now.

Charles Prescott had already walked in. "Uncle."

Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott. "You two came back together?"

Charles Prescott said, "I was having dinner with some people from the hospital, and it turned out my aunt was there too. I knew you were looking for her, so I brought her back personally."

Nathan Fawcett stared at Charles Prescott. "You ate dinner together?"

Charles Prescott, who was usually so imperious outside, felt a little unnerved under Nathan Fawcett's stare.

He was afraid Nathan Fawcett would find out he had been giving Anne Sutton a hard time.

Charles Prescott said, "I was with Dean Walters, discussing your health."

It was true they had discussed Nathan Fawcett's condition.

As for giving Anne Sutton a hard time, that was just incidental.

Nathan Fawcett said to Charles Prescott, "Thank you for your trouble."

With that, he looked at Anne Sutton. "Are you trying to starve me to death?"

Anne Sutton said hurriedly, "I'll go right now."

After speaking, she put her things down, walked into the kitchen, tied on an apron, and started cooking for Nathan Fawcett.

Charles Prescott watched her act like a common maid and felt a surge of derision. 'When she was with me, she never had to do a thing.'

'And now she seems to enjoy being berated and abused by Nathan Fawcett.'

Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott and said, "You can go now."

He had always preferred peace and quiet, which was why even though they all lived on the property, he resided in a separate building to avoid being disturbed.

Hearing his words, Charles Prescott said, "Then rest well, Uncle. I'll be leaving."

Nathan Fawcett was in a foul mood, so Charles Prescott left quickly.

Anne Sutton finished cooking, brought the food out, and saw Nathan Fawcett still sitting there. "Dinner's ready," she said.

Hearing her, the butler, as if seeing his savior, said to Nathan Fawcett, "Sir, it's time to eat."

Only then did Nathan Fawcett stand up.

The butler supported him as he walked to the dining table.

After sitting down, he didn't start eating right away. Instead, he looked at Anne Sutton and asked, "Did you have a good time eating with Charles Prescott?"

Anne Sutton looked at the man. 'Is it just my imagination, or is he actually jealous?'

Anne Sutton said, "Not at all."

She replied as she sat down.

Nathan Fawcett said, "If you weren't enjoying yourself, why did you ignore my calls to come back?"

Hearing him, Anne Sutton put on an aggrieved expression. "He's President Prescott, the great Mr. Prescott. He told me not to leave, so how could I dare to? Wouldn't you agree? Besides, it wasn't just me and him. He brought that Miss Warren along."

Nathan Fawcett eyed her suspiciously. "Is that so?"

The butler said, "Miss Warren did indeed return with them."

Hearing that Charles Prescott had also brought Sylvia Warren, Nathan Fawcett's expression softened slightly.

He said to Anne Sutton, "After I'm dead, you can do whatever you want. Find as many men as you like. But I'm not dead yet. If you dare cheat on me, I won't let you get away with it."

"…"

'This man…'

'When I'm nice to him, he says it has nothing to do with him.'

'But now he's lecturing me left and right!'

'But that's just how men are.'

'For now, she was living under his roof and had to bow to his will.'

'Once he's dead and I get my hands on his inheritance, I won't have to put up with his temper anymore.'

Anne Sutton said, "I know. The dean was the one who called me over today. I didn't even know they were having dinner. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone. Now, let's eat."

With that, she placed a bowl in front of Nathan Fawcett.

As Nathan Fawcett smelled the food, a man who had lost his sense of taste, he could now register the delicious aroma.

He picked up his chopsticks and began to eat.

Anne Sutton sat to the side, watching him. "Is it good?" she asked.

He ignored her.
