After all, Charles Prescott had brought this up with her before Nathan Fawcett had even passed away.
And yet…
Maybe because he hadn't mentioned it again these past few days, she'd even held onto the faint hope that he'd had a change of heart, that he no longer wanted her to get rid of the baby.
Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott and said, "The baby's over seven months along. It won't be long before he's born. I can't bear to get rid of him now! You know how difficult this pregnancy has been for me."
She couldn't fight him head-on, so she could only play the victim, hoping he might show some compassion.
Charles Prescott looked at her tenderly. "Anne, I know. I know how hard it's been for you; I've seen it with my own eyes. Once we get rid of the baby, I'll be good to you! I promise, I'll get a marriage license with you right away, and we'll get married. Okay?"
Anne Sutton said, "I can't trust your promises. You have so many other women…"
