Chapter 222
Jian got out of the van and disappeared into the darkness, leaving Sarah and me alone, our hearts pounding in our chests.
The night air was cold against my skin, carrying the distant sounds of the city, traffic, voices, the hum of life continuing unaware of the danger lurking in its midst. I clutched the strap of my bag, feeling the weight of the vial inside, the evidence that could save the children or get us killed.
"Are you ready for this?" I asked Sarah, my voice barely a whisper.
"As I'll ever be," she said, her eyes determined despite the fear I could see flickering in them. She had been through so much already, and here she was, ready to walk into danger again.
A few minutes later, a loud explosion echoed through the night, followed by the wail of sirens. Jian had created his diversion, something big enough to draw every eye in the hospital.
"That's our cue," I said.
