"Vadim!" The scream tore from my fading throat, raw and hollow.
Behind him, Setsugen's cruel silhouette emerged from the lingering mists of the lake shore, his lips curled into a sickening sneer. With a sickening crunch, he twisted the frozen blade and wrenched it free, letting Vadim collapse forward onto the damp, restored clay.
Blood pooled rapidly beneath his chest, staining the ground we had just bled our souls to mend.
"A touching farewell," Setsugen mocked, flicking crimson drops from his blade onto the earth. "Truly. But why leave him behind to mourn when he can follow you straight into oblivion?"
"Vadim! No, no, no—" I dropped to my knees beside him, my hands passing desperately through the air as my spirit flickered violently, losing its cohesion. I couldn't touch him. I couldn't staunch the bleeding. My fingers were dissolving into scattered pink motes, helpless against the cold reality of his dying body.
