She closed her eyes. "What makes you think that a cold woman like me would ever want to raise a child?"
Her voice trailed off into a weak, ragged sigh, but she didn't have the venom to back it up. We'd known each other too long; the unyielding, porcelain mask she wore for the world couldn't hide the quiet moments when the fortress was still and the northern winds howled outside our windows.
"I have eyes, Hyona," I said softly. "I see how you look at the orphans at the orphanage you secretly support in the lower districts. You think none of us noticed you buy toys in bulk? You sneak them in under the cover of merchant crates, pretending you're inspecting the trade routes, but Tommy literally saw you handing a hand-carved wooden wolf to a crying street kid three months ago."
