Waddell reached the laundry corridor before Caelin's aide finished renaming the hallways.
The shelter looked different when the paper map got stupid on purpose. Laundry became Mop One. The old freezer became Bad Freezer. The service closet became Broom Court because the aide had drawn a crooked crown over it in a hurry.
Waddell liked the ugly names. They made the building belong to tired people again instead of whatever Room Four wanted to call it.
Tyree stood outside the laundry doors with two soldiers and a volunteer teacher who held a mop handle like she had been waiting years for a legal reason to use it.
"Jade says nobody touches weird marks, nobody follows hallway music, and nobody becomes brave without telling the rest of us first."
Tyree glanced at the paper map in Waddell's hand.
"Tell Jade I respect the war map, but I refuse to die in a place called Broom Court."
"Then keep your fire polite and live long enough to complain at her."
