Chapter 59 - Chapter 059: Freedom League

Time rewound six and a half hours ago.

Near the border of New Mexico, inside the city.

Two children, one big and one small, were chasing each other at a street corner.

Just after running past the corner.

Suddenly.

'Screeeech—!!'

A speeding pickup truck came rushing over. The driver panicked and slammed on the brakes, but it was obviously too late.

"Get out of the way~!"

He shouted subconsciously while jerking the steering wheel.

"Oh my God..."

"Watch out~!"

Pedestrians on the side of the road were also startled by the sudden accident; many were already clutching their heads.

At the critical moment.

A slender figure crossed the intersection at an unnatural speed, suddenly pulling the two children in the middle of the road into her arms, diving to the ground just in time, narrowly missing the pickup truck.

It was by a hair's breadth.

...

"!!!"

As it passed the children, the car swerved toward the coffee shop on the side of the road.

The driver's mind went blank. 'I'm in big trouble...'

At this speed, even if he luckily avoided the children, crashing into the wall of the coffee shop would leave him severely injured.

Not to mention, there was a tall, dark-haired woman standing right in front of the coffee shop!

Why was his luck so bad?!

The only thing the driver could do now was to floor the accelerator and wait for the tragedy to happen.

The tires left long drag marks.

In an instant, the car rammed into it.

'Bang Hum~!'

The driver closed his eyes, but the intense impact didn't come. Inside the car, he only felt as if the car's performance had been enhanced for a split second.

Before he could react, the huge kinetic energy had been completely dissipated, and the car came to a stop at an incredible speed.

He and the whole car felt as if they had been instantly enveloped by a gentle force.

The result was a narrow escape!

"Oh, my God~~! I'm okay, I'm still alive!"

The driver was panting, his chest squeezed uncomfortably by the seatbelt, but his body hadn't lurched forward much; even the airbag hadn't deployed.

His legs were weak, and now there was another thing that needed to be confirmed.

"Are you okay?!"

The driver opened the car door and rushed to the front, asking the dark-haired woman nearby in fear. He wasn't sure if the front of the car had hit her.

The woman was very beautiful, her blue eyes seeming to speak.

"Be careful next time."

She moved her hand away from the car's bumper, her face calm: "Whether you hit me or the coffee shop, someone would have been hurt."

"Sorry, sorry, thank God!"

Seeing she was unharmed and the car was only centimeters away from her, the driver patted his chest in relief, almost crying with joy. He swore he would never run a red light again.

The woman shook her head and was about to say something when a familiar call came from the coffee shop behind her: "Oh my God, is that Mira?"

...

On the other side of the road.

"Huff, huff..."

The dark figure climbed up from the ground. It was a white woman in her twenties or thirties. The claws on her hands slowly retracted, and she glanced at the two children beneath her.

"Hey, are you two okay?"

While speaking, she checked their bodies for injuries.

Aside from a few superficial scrapes from rolling on the ground, the children were fine.

A look of relief appeared on the woman's face as she stood up and helped the two children up.

She brushed off the dirt on them and gently pushed them away: "Go on, don't play on the road, it's dangerous."

"Waaah~~!!"

"Sob... thank you."

The younger girl only just reacted, crying in confusion. The older boy controlled his emotions to thank the woman politely, then hurriedly took his sister's hand and left.

"My God, she's so brave!"

"Looking at that speed, she must be a Superhuman."

"Maybe she's some obscure superhero."

...

The woman withdrew her gaze from the departing children, noticed the faint discussions around her, and frowned slightly.

She muttered: "When will I be able to control my meddlesome nature? If Ms. Stormfront finds out, she'll definitely scold me again."

As she spoke, the woman pulled the hood of her jumpsuit over her head, tucked her hands into her pockets, and hurried away from the busy street.

The woman didn't notice that, out of her sight, a famous female superhero had already set her sights on her.

Red hair draped over her shoulders, armor in silver and brown wrapped around her body, a short skirt highlighting her long, straight legs. Her posture was tall like an Amazonian warrior, her eyebrows sharp, her cold beauty unparalleled.

Queen Maeve, a member of Vought International's 'The Seven', gazed at the woman who had disappeared around the corner and said to the empty space behind her: "Translucent, you follow her first. Call me when you find their gathering place."

The few Superhumans who had escaped from the Sage Grove Psychiatric Hospital had, after several twists and turns, actually joined a terrorist organization.

If it weren't for a hidden tracker on someone that he didn't know about, Vought International wouldn't have discovered this place. After all, as a border frontier, this place was indeed too remote.

"No problem, leave it to me."

Translucent's relaxed voice came from the open space: "There has never been anyone that I, Maverick, have lost track of. Just you wait, Queen Maeve, I will definitely catch these cockroaches that escaped through the cracks, one by one."

His arrogant demeanor made Queen Maeve frown.

"This mission has limited time, don't act on your own."

She was somewhat annoyed: "Follow your target, find that damn hideout, and don't do anything until I arrive, understand?"

"Copy that, Madam Officer."

Translucent's voice, now somewhat restrained, came from the air, and there was a rustling sound on the ground as he gradually walked away.

...

...

"Mira, I didn't expect to meet you here. It seems like after graduation, your life has been going pretty well."

"By the way, what have you been staring at that wall for? Are you not satisfied with my cafe's decor?"

Inside the casual cafe, a blonde woman sat opposite Mira, affectionately holding her partner's hand.

"Haha~! That's not it."

Mira withdrew her gaze from the wall and gave a straightforward smile: "Helena, what a coincidence. I didn't expect to run into you just by walking into a random cafe. As an old classmate, it looks like you're the one who's really made it."

Compared to Mira's low-key jeans and shirt combo, Helena and her boyfriend opposite looked more like true successful people in America.

"Hehehe~"

Helena covered her mouth and laughed, her eyebrows filled with pride. Isn't that what all the hard work was for?

She sat up straight and introduced her partner next to her:

"Actually, it's all thanks to my boyfriend, Leo. He takes me to invest in shops and teaches me how to make money in the stock market. Because of a new project recently, he even helped me apply for a substantial business loan. Compared to boys our age, he just knows so much more!"

Leo wore gold-rimmed glasses and looked refined. He appeared to be twenty-seven or twenty-eight. Even in such hot weather, he was meticulous, wearing an expensive suit.

"Hey, since she's your old classmate, don't introduce me like that, okay?"

Leo exuded cultivation, and the look he cast at Mira had a faint, different glint.

He said politely: "Nice to meet you. My name is Leo Valentine, and I'm a professional investment manager."

"I've heard Helena talk about her classmates constantly. Seeing you today, you truly are a beautiful and moving lady. If you have any questions regarding investment in the future, feel free to contact Helena; I might be able to help with a small favor."

Helena looked full of happiness, quite satisfied that Leo could maintain a sense of propriety even when facing a great beauty.

"Thanks, I will... Um, that car is leaving."

The two people opposite were stunned.

Helena was confused: "What car is leaving?"

"Oh, I mean the car I called is leaving."

Mira seemed to have just come back to her senses and explained: "It's a coincidence that we met today, and I should have chatted with you guys for a while longer, but Helena, it's a pity that I have a small matter to handle next. How about we make another time to get together?"

Her voice was so pleasant that Leo listened intently.

Helena: "Hey, so rushed? That's okay. You go ahead and get busy. Remember to send me a message when you're done. I'm basically always at this cafe when I'm free. We really haven't gotten together for a long time."

It was clear she was a bit disappointed, but she didn't mind too much.

"Alright."

Mira gave her an apologetic smile, took her inconspicuous gray-black backpack, walked out of the coffee shop with a breeze, and soon disappeared around the corner.

Inside the cafe, Leo withdrew his gaze and asked his girlfriend as if unintentionally: "What is Mira doing now?"

Helena: "I don't know. But her grades were very good in high school, and she went to a prestigious school, the California Institute of Technology. Her job shouldn't be too bad now."

"I see..."

Leo nodded, his face as normal as ever, not knowing what he was thinking.

...

...

"We only chatted for a while, and all the blood in his body flowed to the wrong place, and he still had the smell of drug powder on him. This repressed man is definitely no good."

Walking on another street, Mira felt very speechless.

Sometimes having too much power leads to awkward situations. The other party's feigned elegant posture was laid bare before her, and his naked gaze was just like a big bad wolf wagging its tail.

Mira was hesitating whether to find an opportunity to tell Helena.

But now, she clearly had more important things to do.

After two days of investigation, she found the hideout of the Snake Lady that Sean mentioned. It was a secret gathering of a Superhuman organization called the Freedom League.

The reason she didn't immediately transform into Supergirl and rush in to destroy it was partly because the leader of this organization had never appeared. The other party was quite cunning, and the members knew very little about them.

Another reason was that some of the members in the organization seemed to have been forced to join; it didn't look like they were all hopeless antisocial individuals.

Mira was not a soft-hearted person, but it was impossible for her to kill innocents indiscriminately.

So she had been waiting for two days.

But she had found the opportunity to root them out.

Because a high-level member in Hawaii lost contact, combined with Vought International's recent big moves, they had agreed on a time, and all members would meet today.

Mira couldn't help but laugh: "That ugly fat guy who controls fish?"

Some things are just that coincidental. These damn guys always end up in Mira's hands.

The Fish King, Frank Powell, and the Snake Lady, Una Gibson—their common trait was that they liked to kill for fun, especially killing Black people...

Today, Mira had been following that Superhuman for a while. The near-accident just now hadn't escaped Mira's eyes, and the other party's act of saving people even surprised her.

She had obtained another piece of valid information.

The leader of the Freedom League, Stormfront, was a female Superhuman. It sounded like a dangerous element who would cause destruction.

Mira really wanted to meet the other party and see what kind of person they were.

Ever since hearing about Sean's experience, Mira had investigated a lot of information, and now her fists were hungry and thirsty.

Interestingly.

Queen Maeve and that perverted Translucent who didn't wear clothes had actually set their sights on the Freedom League, but their information was clearly not as extensive as her own.

At least they didn't know the other party's temporary hideout yet.

"Listening to Translucent, perhaps some members still have a relationship with Vought International?"

It didn't matter. None of these factors could change Mira's determination to act.

Just today.

She planned to wipe out this evil organization in one fell swoop. Since Vought International's superheroes had appeared, she would just let them scout the path ahead first.
