Vera Wave paced back and forth in the room. She walked to the coffee table, picked up her phone, and checked the screen. There were no missed calls or messages, but she confirmed her phone wasn't on silent mode.
Kate Palmer still hadn't replied. Had Vera upset her so much that Kate was now giving her the silent treatment out of spite?!
Clutching her phone, Vera opened her contacts, unable to resist calling Kate.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Someone was at the door.
"Coming!"
Gripping her phone, Vera walked to the door and pulled it open.
The call connected. As soon as she heard Kate Palmer's voice on the other end, Vera blurted out, "Kate, it's Vera. Kris Cooper, he..."
Her words trailed off as she froze.
Standing outside the open door was a tall figure—who else could it be but Kris Cooper?!
Vera froze, her hand gripping the security door.
