...

And if everything went according to plan, within two days the quiet harbor town would see the arrival of new soldiers and new supplies.

For a little while longer the three of them remained standing beside the harbor wall.

The fog machines continued their endless mechanical rhythm behind them, drawing the gray mist inward and venting it again in slow bursts of steam. The sound had become such a normal part of Far Harbor's life that most of the locals barely seemed to notice it anymore.

Nick leaned against the wooden railing, looking out over the water.

The ocean beyond the harbor was nothing but shifting gray haze. Boats that sailed out into it often vanished completely after only a few hundred yards.

He tilted his hat back slightly.

"You ever notice," he said casually, "that the fog makes everything feel closer and farther away at the same time?"

Avery glanced at him.

"That's a strange way to put it."

Nick shrugged.

"You can hear a man shouting half a mile away…"

"…but you can't see the end of the dock."

Avery nodded faintly.

"That's the island."

Sico had been quietly studying the row of wooden buildings lining the harbor street.

His eyes eventually settled on one particular structure.

The building they had been using since arriving in town.

It stood only a short distance away from where they were now.

A simple house.

Weathered wood.

A sloped roof darkened by years of sea wind and fog.

It wasn't impressive, but it was solid.

More importantly, it was close to the docks.

He turned back to Avery.

"There is another matter."

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

Sico gestured toward the building behind them.

"The house we are currently using."

Avery followed his gaze.

"That old place?"

"Yes."

She shrugged lightly.

"Belonged to a fisherman who moved south years ago."

"No one's lived there in a while."

Sico nodded once.

"Then I would like permission to use it."

Avery crossed her arms.

"For what?"

Sico answered calmly.

"As our headquarters."

Nick raised an eyebrow slightly.

The word headquarters had a certain weight to it.

Avery noticed it too.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Headquarters?"

"Yes."

Sico spoke as plainly as ever.

"My men will need a central place to organize supplies and operations when they arrive."

Nick added casually,

"And somewhere to stack all those crates."

Avery looked from Nick back to Sico.

"How many men are we talking about exactly?"

Sico didn't answer right away.

Instead he reached into the inner pocket of his coat.

He pulled out a small metal badge.

It wasn't flashy.

But it carried a symbol engraved deeply into its surface.

A circular emblem.

Interlocking lines.

Old geometry.

Carefully crafted.

Nick watched quietly.

Avery studied the object with mild curiosity.

Sico held it up briefly.

Then he spoke.

"My name is Sico."

"I am the President of the Freemasons Republic."

For a moment the world seemed to go quiet around them.

Even the sound of the fog machines faded into the background.

Avery stared at him.

She blinked once.

Then again.

The words took a few seconds to fully register.

"…President?"

Nick tilted his head slightly, watching her reaction.

Avery's expression had completely changed.

Her confident composure from earlier had cracked just a little.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

Sico's tone never changed.

Avery looked again at the badge in his hand.

Then at the soldiers she had seen earlier inside the house.

Then back at Sico.

Her voice lowered slightly.

"I thought…"

She hesitated.

Nick finished the sentence for her with a faint smile.

"You thought we were just a detective agency."

Avery nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Her eyes flicked toward Nick.

"You said you were looking for Kasumi."

"We are."

Nick shrugged.

"That part wasn't a lie."

She looked back toward the harbor where Albert's patrol boat had disappeared earlier.

"And those soldiers…"

"…I assumed they were mercenaries."

Nick chuckled softly.

"That's a common first impression."

Avery let out a slow breath.

"So you're telling me…"

"…that the armed group currently setting up inside my town…"

"…belongs to an actual republic?"

Sico nodded.

"Yes."

Avery ran a hand slowly through her hair.

For someone who spent her life managing a fragile settlement surrounded by radioactive fog and sea monsters, she had seen her share of strange situations.

But this one clearly hadn't been on her list.

Nick watched her with quiet amusement.

"Take your time."

She looked back at Sico again.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"The Freemasons Republic?"

"Yes."

Nick leaned casually against the railing again.

"Big place."

Avery stared at him.

"How big?"

Nick shrugged.

"Big enough to have a president."

She looked back at Sico.

"And you're that president."

"Yes."

The fog drifted between them in slow waves as another burst of steam rose from the nearby condenser.

Avery turned away briefly, looking out over the harbor again.

The town continued moving as normal.

Fishermen hauling nets.

Children running between buildings.

Someone shouting instructions from a dock.

Everything looked exactly the same.

But suddenly the situation felt very different.

After a long moment she turned back toward him.

"Why didn't you say this earlier?"

Sico answered simply.

"It was not necessary."

Nick added,

"We try not to lead with politics."

Avery gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"That would've been useful information."

Sico didn't react to the comment.

Instead he continued calmly.

"My intention is to establish good relations with Far Harbor."

She studied him carefully.

"Good relations."

"Yes."

"You help us defend the harbor."

"We supply your town."

"We trade."

"And in return?"

Nick raised a finger.

"Fair question."

Sico answered.

"Cooperation."

Avery crossed her arms again.

"You're not trying to control the town."

"No."

"You're not planning to occupy it."

"No."

Nick nodded.

"Promise."

Avery looked from one to the other.

Then back toward the town behind them.

Her mind was clearly running through possibilities.

Far Harbor survived on caution.

Trust was always measured carefully.

But she had already seen what these people were capable of.

They had helped defend the harbor wall during the gulper attack.

They had offered supplies without demanding anything in return.

And now, apparently they represented an entire republic.

Finally she looked back at Sico.

"You want to use that building as your headquarters."

"Yes."

"For now."

She exhaled slowly.

"That building's been empty for years."

Nick smiled.

"Then it sounds perfect."

Avery shook her head slightly.

"You really dropped that information casually."

Nick chuckled.

"Timing is everything."

She looked again at the badge in Sico's hand.

Then she nodded.

"Alright."

Nick tilted his head.

"That was quick."

Avery gestured toward the town behind them.

"Far Harbor doesn't get many opportunities like this."

She pointed toward the house.

"You can use the building."

"Temporarily."

Sico nodded.

"That is acceptable."

She continued.

"But there are conditions."

Nick raised an eyebrow.

"Of course there are."

Avery's voice was firm now.

"Your men respect the town."

"They follow our laws while they're here."

"No intimidation."

"No trouble."

Nick held up his hands.

"Reasonable."

Sico nodded.

"Agreed."

Avery studied him again.

"And when your reinforcements arrive…"

"…you inform me first."

"Yes."

Nick grinned.

"See?"

"This is already working out."

Avery gave him a dry look.

"I'm still processing the part where the quiet stranger who walked into my town yesterday turns out to be a president."

Nick shrugged.

"Life's full of surprises."

Another wave of fog drifted across the harbor wall.

The machines hummed louder for a moment before settling back into their steady rhythm.

Avery looked toward the building again.

"Your headquarters."

"Yes."

Nick smiled slightly.

"Has a nice ring to it."

Avery shook her head again, though there was a faint smile hiding in the corners of her mouth now.

"Well, President…"

The word sounded strange coming from her.

"…welcome to Far Harbor."

Sico gave a short nod.

"Thank you."

For a while after Avery's welcome, none of them spoke.

The machines behind them continued their endless work, drawing the poisonous mist through metal pipes and pushing it back out in steady bursts of vapor. The dull mechanical rumble blended with the creak of ropes against dock posts and the distant crash of waves against the rocky shoreline beyond the fog.

Nick rested both elbows on the railing now, watching a fishing boat slowly emerge from the gray haze.

Two men stood aboard it, hauling in a net that glistened faintly with seawater.

Life in Far Harbor continued the way it always had.

Hard.

Quiet.

Persistent.

Avery still looked thoughtful.

She glanced once more at the small metal badge Sico had already returned to his coat.

Then she looked toward the building he had asked to use as headquarters.

The empty fisherman's house.

Now apparently the first outpost of an entire republic.

Nick broke the silence first.

"Well."

He stretched his arms slightly.

"This morning got interesting."

Avery gave him a sideways look.

"That's one way to put it."

Nick shrugged.

"Usually when I wake up I just get coffee."

She almost smiled again, but her attention quickly shifted back to Sico.

"You said something earlier."

Sico looked at her.

"What?"

"You said this would be your headquarters."

"Yes."

"And that more of your men are coming."

"Yes."

She nodded slowly.

Nick could see she was still trying to picture the situation in her head.

An isolated harbor town surrounded by deadly fog and mutated wildlife was suddenly about to host soldiers from an organized republic.

Not exactly a normal development.

Sico watched the harbor for a moment.

Then he spoke again.

"There is another matter we should discuss."

Avery's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That's becoming a common phrase today."

Nick chuckled under his breath.

Sico gestured slightly toward the land stretching behind Far Harbor.

Beyond the buildings and docks.

Beyond the outer defenses and fog machines.

The island itself.

Dense forest.

Broken roads.

Ruined settlements swallowed by vegetation and mist.

"In the future," Sico said calmly, "the Republic intends to build a settlement here."

Avery blinked.

"Here?"

"Yes."

"Near Far Harbor."

Nick tilted his head slightly.

"Well."

"That escalated quickly."

Avery stared at Sico.

"You're planning to build a settlement beside the town?"

"Yes."

"For what purpose?" she asked.

"To increase the Republic's influence on the island."

The words were spoken without arrogance.

Just quiet certainty.

But they still carried weight.

Avery crossed her arms again.

Nick watched her reaction carefully.

She didn't look angry.

But she definitely looked concerned.

"You're talking about bringing a whole new community here," she said slowly.

"Yes."

Nick leaned back against the railing again.

"More people."

"More trade."

"More stability."

Avery didn't answer immediately.

She looked out toward the harbor again.

The fog drifted slowly between the buildings and machines like a living curtain.

For years Far Harbor had survived alone.

Barely.

Sometimes just one bad season away from collapse.

Every winter they worried about supplies.

Every attack on the wall cost them ammunition they couldn't easily replace.

Every broken fog condenser threatened the entire town.

And now…

A republic wanted to build a settlement beside them.

It was a strange opportunity.

But also a dangerous one.

Finally she spoke again.

"Let me ask you something."

Sico waited.

"If you build a settlement beside Far Harbor…"

"Yes?"

"What happens to us?"

Nick raised an eyebrow.

"Meaning?"

Avery gestured toward the town behind them.

"Meaning we've been surviving on this island for years."

"Barely holding back the fog."

"Barely holding back the creatures."

"And barely keeping the peace between the different groups out here."

She looked directly at Sico.

"If you suddenly plant a republic settlement beside us…"

"…what happens to the people already living here?"

Nick folded his arms.

"That's a fair concern."

Sico answered calmly.

"The settlement would not replace Far Harbor."

"It would support it."

Avery studied him carefully.

"And if your republic grows stronger here?"

"It will."

That answer was immediate.

Confident.

Nick glanced at him briefly but didn't interrupt.

Avery remained silent for a moment.

Then something shifted in her expression.

A new idea forming.

She looked toward the harbor again.

Then back toward the town.

Then finally toward Sico.

"What if you didn't build a new settlement?"

Nick tilted his head.

"Oh?"

She looked directly at him now.

"What if you used Far Harbor instead?"

The words hung in the fog-filled air.

Nick blinked once.

"Well."

"That's a twist."

Sico studied her quietly.

"Explain."

Avery stepped closer to the railing.

She gestured toward the town.

"These people have already built something here."

"A working harbor."

"A functioning community."

"Defenses."

"Fog machines."

"We know the island."

She paused briefly.

"And if your republic wants influence here…"

"…you already have the perfect foothold."

Nick rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"You're suggesting something like an alliance."

"More than that," Avery said.

She met Sico's gaze directly.

"If Far Harbor becomes part of your republic…"

"…you wouldn't need to build another settlement."

Nick raised his eyebrows.

"That's… surprisingly bold."

Avery didn't look away.

"But there would be conditions."

Sico nodded slightly.

"Of course."

Her voice grew more serious now.

"Far Harbor has enemies."

Nick muttered quietly,

"Let me guess."

"The cult in the glowing crater."

Avery nodded.

"The Children of Atom."

The name hung in the air like a bad smell.

Nick sighed softly.

"Fanatics who worship radiation."

"I've heard the stories."

Avery's expression hardened.

"They live at the Nucleus."

"And they've been pushing further into the island every year."

She gestured toward the fog-covered wilderness beyond the town.

"They send missionaries."

"They recruit people."

"Sometimes they attack caravans."

"Sometimes worse."

Nick nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

"That tracks."

Avery looked back at Sico.

"If Far Harbor joins your republic…"

"…we need your help to counter the Children of Atom."

Nick scratched his chin again.

"Meaning military support."

"Yes."

Sico didn't answer immediately.

Avery continued.

"And one more thing."

Nick chuckled quietly.

"There's always one more thing."

Avery ignored him.

She looked directly at Sico.

"You promise never to harm the citizens of Far Harbor."

Nick stopped smiling.

Even he recognized the seriousness of that request.

Avery continued quietly.

"No occupation."

"No forced rule."

"No punishment if someone disagrees with you."

She gestured toward the town again.

"These people survived the war."

"They survived the fog."

"They survived monsters."

"They deserve to live without fear."

The fog drifted across the harbor again, partially swallowing the distant boats.

Sico stood silently for a moment.

Thinking.

Nick watched him carefully.

Avery waited.

The machines hummed.

The waves crashed faintly against distant rocks.

Finally Sico spoke.

"If Far Harbor becomes part of the Freemasons Republic…"

"Yes?"

"…then it would receive the protection of the Republic."

Nick nodded slowly.

"That includes military support."

"Yes."

Sico looked toward the island's interior.

"And the Children of Atom would become enemies of the Republic."

Avery's shoulders straightened slightly.

But Sico continued.

"However."

Nick sighed quietly.

"Here it comes."

Sico turned back toward Avery.

"If Far Harbor joins the Republic…"

"…then it must officially become part of it."

Avery waited.

"The town will become a recognized territory of the Freemasons Republic."

Nick watched her reaction.

Sico continued.

"But its internal leadership will remain unchanged."

Avery blinked.

"You mean…"

"You will continue to lead Far Harbor."

The wind shifted slightly, pushing a thin wave of fog across the harbor wall.

For a moment none of them spoke again.

Avery looked genuinely surprised.

"You're not replacing the leadership."

"No."

"You're not appointing your own governor."

"No."

Nick smiled faintly.

"He prefers cooperation over paperwork."

Sico continued.

"You understand the town."

"You already lead its people."

"It would be inefficient to replace you."

Avery stared at him for a moment.

Then she laughed softly.

"Efficient."

"That's one way to describe it."

Nick chuckled.

"I like his management style."

Avery looked toward the town again.

Fishermen continued hauling crates from boats.

Someone shouted directions from the dock.

Children ran between buildings.

All of it fragile.

All of it constantly under threat from the island.

She turned back to Sico.

"You're offering protection."

"Yes."

"Supplies."

"Yes."

"Trade."

"Yes."

"And we keep our leadership."

"Yes."

Nick spread his hands.

"Sounds like a decent deal."

Avery didn't answer immediately.

She looked toward the fog-covered ocean again.

Then she looked toward the road leading deeper into the island.

Toward the wilderness.

Toward the Nucleus.

Toward the Children of Atom.

Finally she spoke quietly.

"I need time to think about it."

Nick nodded.

"Fair."

Sico simply said,

"Of course."

Avery exhaled slowly.

"This isn't a small decision."

Nick smiled faintly.

"No."

"Joining a republic usually isn't."

She looked back at Sico one more time.

"But if we do this…"

"Yes?"

"…Far Harbor survives."

Sico nodded once.

"That is the goal."

The fog machines hissed loudly again as another wave of mist rolled against the harbor wall.

For a long moment after that, the three of them remained where they stood.

No one rushed to fill the silence.

The sea moved slowly beneath the docks. The tide rolled against the wooden pilings with a steady rhythm, as if the ocean itself had grown used to the strange quiet conversations that sometimes happened here.

Nick finally straightened from the railing.

"Well," he said, stretching his shoulders a little. "That's enough heavy politics for one morning."

Avery gave him a small look.

"You say that like it happens often."

Nick shrugged.

"Not usually before lunch."

Sico had already turned his gaze toward the horizon again.

Beyond the gray curtain of fog, the mainland waited somewhere far out across the water.

Somewhere out there, Albert's boat was still moving.

And when it returned…

things would begin to change.

Avery folded her arms again, though this time the gesture felt less defensive and more thoughtful.

"I'll talk with the town council," she said quietly.

Nick nodded.

"Sounds wise."

She looked back toward Sico.

"And I'll need to hear more about this… Republic of yours."

"You will," Sico replied calmly.

Then the three of them separated.

Far Harbor returned to its ordinary rhythm.

But the future had already begun shifting beneath the fog.

Two day later, the morning arrived cold.

The fog was thicker than usual.

Gray clouds hung low above the harbor, blending almost seamlessly with the mist that rolled endlessly across the sea. The fog machines along the walls were already working hard, their pipes rattling as they pulled the toxic vapor inward and vented it away from the town.

Fishermen moved across the docks, their boots thudding against wet planks as they prepared their boats.

Ropes creaked.

Crates scraped.

Somewhere down the street a generator coughed to life.

It looked like an ordinary morning.

But the mood was different.

Word had quietly spread through Far Harbor over the last two days.

Something was coming.

Avery had made sure people didn't panic.

But she hadn't hidden the truth either.

A convoy from the mainland.

Soldiers.

Supplies.

An entire republic stepping onto their island.

Now many of the townsfolk had gathered near the harbor wall.

Not in a crowd exactly.

Far Harbor people didn't crowd.

But they lingered nearby.

Watching the water.

Waiting.

Near the end of the dock stood three figures.

Sico.

Nick.

And Avery.

Nick had both hands resting on the railing again, hat tilted slightly forward as he stared into the fog.

"Well," he muttered, "this is the part where dramatic music usually starts playing."

Avery glanced at him.

"You always talk like that?"

Nick smiled faintly.

"Occupational habit."

Sico remained still beside them.

Watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

Then Nick suddenly tilted his head.

"Hold on."

Avery looked at him.

"What?"

Nick pointed faintly toward the fog.

"You hear that?"

At first there was nothing.

Only the wind.

The waves.

Then slowly…

a distant mechanical rumble.

Avery frowned slightly.

"That's not a fishing engine."

"Nope," Nick said quietly.

The sound grew louder.

Not one engine.

Several.

The fog ahead of the harbor began to ripple slightly as shapes moved within it.

People along the docks began murmuring.

Fishermen stopped their work.

A few guards along the wall lifted their rifles, though Avery quickly raised a hand.

"Easy."

Then the first silhouette emerged from the fog.

A patrol boat.

Long.

Angular.

Military.

Its metal hull cut cleanly through the gray water as it approached the harbor entrance.

Nick whistled softly.

"Well."

"That's definitely not local."

The boat moved closer, its engines rumbling steadily.

Painted along the side of the hull was the symbol Avery had seen two days earlier on Sico's badge.

The emblem of the Freemasons Republic.

And behind it, more shapes began appearing.

Avery blinked slowly.

"Wait."

Another boat pushed through the fog.

Then another.

Then another.

Nick counted quietly under his breath.

"One…"

"…two…"

"…three…"

The harbor slowly filled with the silhouettes of approaching vessels.

Seven of them in total.

Seven Defender-class boats.

Their engines growled across the water as they advanced in loose formation toward the harbor entrance.

Avery stared.

"You brought an entire fleet."

Nick scratched the side of his jaw.

"Technically this is a small convoy."

The boats slowed as they approached the docks.

And as the fog thinned slightly around them, the details became clearer.

Avery's eyes widened.

"Power armor."

Nick nodded.

"Yep."

On the decks of the first two boats, soldiers stood like metal giants.

Six on each vessel.

Twelve figures in total.

Each one encased in towering power armor frames that gleamed dully beneath the gray morning light.

Hydraulic joints hissed softly as they shifted their weight.

Their rifles rested easily in massive armored hands.

Far Harbor had seen many strange things.

But nothing quite like that.

Several townsfolk nearby whispered in shock.

"Look at the size of them…"

"Are those walking tanks?"

Avery crossed her arms slowly, absorbing the sight.

"That's impressive."

Nick leaned closer to her slightly.

"Wait until you see the rest."

Behind the armored escort boats came two more vessels.

These ones rode slightly lower in the water.

Heavy.

Loaded.

Crates stacked across their decks beneath tarps and metal straps.

Supply ships.

Avery immediately recognized the shapes of cargo containers.

Food shipments.

Ammunition cases.

Medical equipment crates.

Tools.

Fuel drums.

Enough supplies to change the balance of survival on the island.

Then came the final three boats.

These moved in formation behind the supply vessels.

Each carried rows of soldiers standing along the decks.

Twelve men on each boat.

Thirty-six soldiers total.

All wearing dark combat armor marked with the Republic emblem.

Disciplined.

Still.

Watching the harbor carefully as they approached.

Nick counted quietly again.

"Twelve… twenty-four… thirty-six…"

He gave a low whistle.

"Well."

"That's a respectable welcoming party."

Avery looked sideways at Sico.

"You brought thirty six soldiers."

Sico corrected calmly.

"Thirty six plus twelve power armor operators."

Nick grinned.

"Seventy-two total."

Avery exhaled slowly.

Around them the entire harbor had gone nearly silent.

Even the fishermen had stopped working.

People stood watching the incoming convoy with cautious amazement.

The seven Defender-class boats slowed as they reached the docks.

Engines throttled down.

Water churned softly against their hulls.

Ropes were thrown.

Crew members secured the vessels to the harbor posts.

Then the first of the armored soldiers moved.

A massive power armor figure stepped toward the edge of the deck.

Hydraulics whined.

With a heavy metallic THUD, the armored boots landed on the wooden dock.

The planks creaked slightly beneath the weight.

Nick leaned closer to Avery.

"See?"

"Walking tanks."

More followed.

One by one the power armor troops disembarked.

Twelve towering figures now stood along the harbor dock.

Their presence alone changed the atmosphere of the entire town.

Then the regular soldiers began stepping off the other boats.

Boots hitting wood in steady rhythm.

Disciplined.

Organized.

They moved with practiced coordination, forming small groups while officers began issuing quiet orders.

Crates were already being lifted from the supply ships.

Dockworkers stared in disbelief as soldiers carried heavy containers down the ramps with efficient speed.

Food.

Ammo.

Medical kits.

Tools.

Barrels of fuel.

Nick scratched the back of his neck.

"Yep."

"That's definitely going to make Mitch complain about storage space."

Avery didn't answer immediately.

She was still watching the scene unfold.

The organization.

The discipline.

The sheer scale of what had just arrived in her harbor.

This wasn't a mercenary band.

This was an army.

And it belonged to the man standing quietly beside her.

Finally she spoke.

"You really are a republic."

Sico nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Across the dock, one of the soldiers began approaching them.

A tall man in officer armor.

He stopped a few steps away and snapped a crisp salute.

"Mr. President."

Nick tipped his hat slightly.

"Ah."

"Formalities begin."

The officer spoke clearly.

"Convoy from Naval Headquarters has arrived as ordered."

Sico nodded once.

"Report."

"Two supply vessels fully stocked."

"Thirty-six infantry."

"Twelve power armor operators."

"Full equipment and ammunition."

Nick folded his arms.

"Efficient."

The officer continued.

"No casualties during transport."

"The mainland fleet remains secure."

Sico glanced briefly toward the assembled troops along the dock.

Then he spoke calmly.

"Begin unloading supplies."

"Yes, sir."

The officer turned immediately and began issuing commands.

Soldiers moved quickly.

Crates came down the ramps.

Power armor units began assisting with heavier containers.

The docks filled with activity.

Nick leaned against the railing again.

"Well."

He looked toward Avery.

"You wanted to see the soldiers."

Avery slowly nodded.

"Yes."

Her eyes moved across the harbor.

Across the boats.

Across the armored troops and disciplined infantry.

Then she looked back at Sico.

"I think the town council will want to speak with you again."

Nick chuckled softly.

"Yeah."

"I figured that might happen."

The fog rolled across the harbor again as the Freemasons Republic officially arrived in Far Harbor and the island, was about to change forever.
