...

And just like that, they finally arrive at Acadia.

The gate shut behind them with a heavy, final sound.

For a brief moment, the outside world disappeared completely.

The fog.

The forest.

The distant threats lurking in it.

All of it was cut off like a door slamming on a storm.

Not clean.

Not safe.

But controlled.

Contained.

Nick paused just a step past the threshold, glancing around instinctively. His hand hovered near his revolver, not drawing it, but not letting himself forget it was there either.

"…Well," he muttered quietly, "that's one way to separate yourself from the neighborhood."

Sico didn't pause.

He moved forward with the same calm, measured pace as before, eyes already scanning their new surroundings.

Acadia wasn't what either of them expected.

The inside of the outer perimeter felt like a mix of old and new, carefully balanced together. Pre-war concrete pathways cracked with age ran alongside recently reinforced sections. Metal panels had been welded into place where walls had weakened. Wires ran overhead in organized bundles, feeding power into lights that glowed softly against the gray atmosphere.

There was life here.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

But present.

A few figures moved in the distance.

Synths.

Some clearly older models.

Some almost indistinguishable from humans.

All of them moving with purpose.

Nick exhaled slowly.

"…Okay."

"Not what I expected."

Chase didn't slow down.

"Most people say that."

Her tone wasn't defensive.

Just factual.

She walked ahead of them, leading the way toward the main structure.

The observatory towered above them now, its massive dome barely visible through the thinning fog that clung to the upper sections. The lower buildings connected to it formed a kind of small compound, each section repurposed, reinforced, made livable.

Nick glanced upward.

"…You know," he said, "for a place built to look at stars, this thing's seen a lot of ground-level problems."

Chase didn't respond to the joke.

But there was the faintest shift in her posture.

Like she'd heard it.

Just didn't feel like answering.

They reached a heavy metal door set into the main building.

Chase didn't hesitate.

She pressed a panel beside it.

The door slid open with a low mechanical hum.

"Come."

Sico entered first.

Nick followed.

The inside of the observatory felt even more different.

Warmer.

The lighting shifted from the gray haze outside to a soft, controlled glow. Old walls had been reinforced, patched, and in some places completely replaced. The air smelled faintly of electronics and metal, mixed with something else…

Clean fabric.

Recycled air.

Maintenance.

Nick took a slow look around.

"…Alright."

"Now I'm officially curious."

Chase walked ahead, leading them deeper inside.

They entered a corridor.

Long.

Narrow.

The walls lined with cables and old control panels that had clearly been repurposed. Some flickered faintly. Others hummed with steady energy. The floor beneath their boots was metal, worn but solid.

Their footsteps echoed softly now.

Different from the forest.

Different from the docks.

Contained.

Nick's voice dropped slightly as they walked.

"…Feels like we just stepped into a completely different world."

Sico nodded once.

"Yes."

Chase spoke without turning.

"In many ways, you have."

They continued down the corridor.

As they passed, a few synths looked up briefly.

Some nodded to Chase.

Others simply observed.

There was no fear.

No panic.

But there was awareness.

Careful attention.

Nick noticed it.

"…They're watching us."

Chase answered calmly.

"They're aware of you."

Nick smirked faintly.

"Yeah, that's one way to put it."

They reached a junction in the corridor.

Chase turned without hesitation, leading them toward a section where the lighting grew slightly brighter.

"There's someone who will want to meet you first," she said.

Nick raised an eyebrow.

"…Before we see Kasumi?"

"Yes."

Nick sighed quietly.

"Of course there is."

He glanced at Sico.

"Nothing's ever simple, is it?"

Sico didn't respond.

They continued walking.

The corridor opened up gradually.

The ceiling rose higher.

The walls curved slightly.

And then—

They entered the dome.

The telescope chamber.

Nick stopped for a second.

"…Alright."

"That's impressive."

The space was massive.

Far larger than it had seemed from the outside.

The domed ceiling stretched high above them, reinforced but still showing the original structure of the observatory. Sections of the telescope apparatus remained, though much of it had been repurposed.

It wasn't just a telescope room anymore.

It was a control center.

Screens.

Terminals.

Cables running across the floor and walls.

Soft lights blinking in steady rhythms.

And at the center of it all.

Two figures.

One stood at a workstation.

A man in a lab coat.

Older.

Focused.

Hands moving quickly across a console as he adjusted something with practiced precision.

The other…

Sat.

Connected.

A first-generation synth.

Nick's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Well."

"That's something you don't see every day."

The synth sat in a chair, cables running from its body into multiple terminals. Its mechanical frame was exposed, unmistakably artificial. Yet it wasn't inactive.

There was something about it.

Presence.

Awareness.

Chase stepped forward slightly.

"Faraday."

The man in the lab coat looked up.

He blinked once, clearly pulled out of whatever work he'd been focused on.

"…Ah."

He straightened slightly, adjusting his glasses.

"You're back."

His eyes moved past Chase.

To Sico.

To Nick.

Curiosity flickered immediately.

"Oh."

"Well, this is new."

Chase gestured toward him.

"This is Faraday."

Nick gave a small nod.

"Nice setup you've got here."

Faraday smiled faintly.

"It's… functional."

Then Chase turned slightly, her gaze shifting toward the seated synth.

"And this…"

Her tone changed just slightly.

More formal.

"…is DiMA."

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the synth moved.

Slowly.

Its head lifted slightly.

The faint hum of the connected systems shifted.

And when it spoke, its voice was calm.

Measured.

But undeniably aware.

"…Nick."

Nick froze.

Just for a second.

His expression shifted.

Confusion.

Recognition?

No.

Not quite.

"…Do I know you?" Nick asked.

DiMA's posture straightened slightly.

There was something in the way it looked at him.

Not just recognition.

Something deeper.

"I had hoped…" DiMA said slowly, "…that you might remember."

Nick frowned.

"…Yeah."

"That's usually not a good sign."

Faraday glanced between them, clearly intrigued.

Chase remained still.

Watching.

Observing.

DiMA continued.

"We've met before."

Nick shook his head slightly.

"Not ringing any bells."

A pause.

Then Nick added, a bit more cautiously,

"…Should it?"

DiMA didn't answer immediately.

It studied him.

Carefully.

As if trying to reconcile something that didn't quite match expectations.

"…Perhaps not," it said finally.

Nick exhaled slowly.

"…Alright."

"That's not unsettling at all."

Sico stepped forward slightly.

Shifting the focus.

"We are here for Kasumi Nakano."

The name brought the attention back.

Faraday glanced toward DiMA.

Chase remained composed.

DiMA turned its gaze toward Sico.

"You've come a long way to find her."

Sico nodded once.

"Yes."

Nick added,

"Her parents are worried."

"That's kind of the whole reason we're here."

DiMA's expression shifted subtly.

"Kasumi is safe here."

Nick crossed his arms slightly.

"Good."

"Because they're worried she isn't."

DiMA inclined its head slightly.

"She came here seeking answers."

Nick raised an eyebrow.

"About what?"

DiMA didn't answer that immediately.

Instead, it asked its own question.

"…And you?"

Nick blinked.

"…Me?"

"Yes."

DiMA's voice remained calm.

"Why did you come?"

Nick shrugged slightly.

"Same reason."

"Find the girl."

"Make sure she's alright."

"Try to get her back home."

A pause.

Then he added,

"…Standard detective stuff."

DiMA studied him again.

Longer this time.

As if looking for something beneath the words.

"And you," it said, turning slightly toward Sico.

"Your purpose?"

Sico answered without hesitation.

"To ensure her safety."

"And return her if possible."

DiMA nodded slowly.

"Admirable."

Nick smirked faintly.

"Yeah, we try."

Faraday finally stepped in again, curiosity getting the better of him.

"You came all the way through the island for this?"

Nick glanced at him.

"Through Trappers."

"Fog Crawlers."

"Bad weather."

"Worse decisions."

He shrugged.

"…Yeah."

Faraday blinked.

"…That's… commitment."

Nick smiled faintly.

"You could call it that."

Chase stepped forward slightly.

"Kasumi is here."

"But she made her own choice to come."

Nick nodded.

"Yeah, we figured."

"That doesn't mean her parents stop worrying."

DiMA spoke again.

"She is not being held."

Nick looked at it directly.

"Good."

"Because if she was, we'd be having a very different conversation."

The room fell quiet for a moment.

Not tense.

But careful.

Measured.

DiMA finally spoke again.

"…You will be allowed to see her."

Nick exhaled.

"Finally."

"But," DiMA added.

Nick groaned quietly.

"…There's always a 'but.'"

DiMA continued calmly.

"She must decide for herself."

Nick nodded slowly.

"Fair."

Sico spoke.

"That is acceptable."

DiMA inclined its head slightly.

"Then we understand each other."

Nick glanced between them.

"…Alright."

"So."

"When do we get to talk to her?"

Chase stepped forward again.

"I'll take you."

Nick let out a breath.

"Good."

He looked around the dome one more time.

At the cables.

At the terminals.

At DiMA.

"…Interesting place you've got here."

DiMA's voice followed them as they prepared to move.

"This place is more than it seems."

Nick paused briefly.

Then glanced back.

"…Yeah."

"I'm starting to get that."

And with that.

They turned to follow Chase deeper into Acadia.

For a moment, the dome behind them lingered in the air like a held breath.

The quiet hum of machines.

The steady presence of DiMA.

Faraday already drifting back into his work as if the conversation had been only a small interruption in a much larger, ongoing process.

Then the corridor swallowed them again.

And Acadia unfolded further.

The path Chase took this time wasn't upward.

It was down.

A narrow stairwell branched off from the main corridor, half-hidden behind a reinforced support beam. It looked older than the rest of the structure from the original, pre-war construction that had simply been maintained rather than rebuilt.

"Watch your step," Chase said as she started down.

The metal stairs creaked faintly under their weight.

Not dangerously.

But enough to remind them that this place had history beneath every surface.

Nick followed just behind her, glancing down the spiraling descent.

"…Alright," he muttered, "we're going underground now."

Sico moved without hesitation behind him.

"The structure extends below ground level," he said.

Nick glanced over his shoulder slightly.

"Yeah, I figured that much."

He paused for half a second.

"…Still doesn't mean I have to like it."

The air shifted as they descended.

Cooler.

Denser.

The faint scent of electronics was still there, but now it mixed with something else.

Human.

Or close to it.

Living space.

Breathing.

Nick noticed immediately.

"…Smells different down here."

Chase answered calmly.

"People live here."

Nick gave a faint nod.

"Yeah."

"That tracks."

They reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped into a wider corridor.

And just like that, the atmosphere changed again.

This wasn't a control center.

This wasn't a fortified perimeter.

This was…

A home.

Not a perfect one.

Not a comfortable one by pre-war standards.

But undeniably lived-in.

Lights here were softer.

Less clinical.

Walls were still reinforced metal and concrete, but someone had tried to make them feel less cold. Fabric had been hung in a few places. Small personal items rested on makeshift shelves.

A chair.

A folded blanket.

A container carefully labeled and organized.

Nick slowed slightly as he took it all in.

"…Huh."

Chase glanced back briefly.

"What?"

Nick shrugged faintly.

"I was expecting… I don't know."

"Something more… sterile."

Chase continued walking.

"We're not machines."

Nick smirked slightly.

"Yeah."

"I'm starting to see that."

As they moved deeper into the intermediate level, more figures became visible.

Synths.

Some clearly older models with exposed mechanical parts.

Others, you wouldn't know unless you were looking for it.

They moved through the space naturally.

Talking quietly.

Working.

Maintaining.

Living.

One synth paused as they passed, giving Chase a small nod.

She returned it.

Respect.

Familiarity.

Nick leaned slightly toward Sico.

"…Okay."

"This is definitely not what I expected."

Sico observed silently.

"Explain."

Nick gestured subtly around them.

"They're… functioning."

Sico nodded.

"Yes."

Nick frowned slightly.

"…No, I mean really functioning."

"Like a community."

Sico didn't respond.

But he didn't need to.

Chase slowed near an open area.

"This is the intermediate level," she said.

Nick looked around more carefully now.

It opened up slightly here.

Several small sections branched off from sleeping areas, storage corners, workspaces.

It wasn't large.

But it was organized.

Efficient.

A place built not just to survive, but to continue.

A figure approached them.

A woman.

Her posture was calm, steady, purposeful.

She wore practical clothing, reinforced in places, clearly designed for work rather than appearance.

Her eyes moved to Chase first.

Then to Nick and Sico.

Assessing.

But not hostile.

Chase gestured toward her.

"This is Aster."

The woman gave a small nod.

"I oversee medical and agricultural systems," Aster said.

Her voice was even.

Controlled.

Nick raised an eyebrow.

"…That's a pretty important combination."

Aster didn't smile.

"It is."

Nick gave a faint smirk.

"Guess that makes you very popular around here."

Aster tilted her head slightly.

"Popular is not the goal."

"Functional is."

Nick chuckled softly.

"Yeah."

"I like you already."

Aster didn't react to that.

But there was the faintest shift in her expression.

Something close to understanding.

Chase continued walking.

"Come."

They moved past Aster and deeper into the level.

Nick glanced back briefly.

"…She's serious."

Sico nodded.

"She is effective."

Nick smirked.

"Yeah, that too."

Further along, two more figures stood near a small trading area.

If you could call it that.

A table.

A few organized crates.

Items carefully arranged.

Parts.

Tools.

Salvaged components.

One of them looked up as they approached.

Younger in appearance.

Alert.

His eyes moved quickly between them.

Curious.

Chase gestured.

"This is Cog."

The young man gave a quick nod.

"…Visitors."

Nick smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

"That obvious?"

Cog shrugged slightly.

"We don't get many."

Nick glanced around.

"Can't imagine why."

The second figure spoke.

Older.

More relaxed.

Leaning slightly against the table.

"This one talks a lot," he said, nodding toward Nick.

Nick pointed at him.

"Hey."

"That's part of the charm."

Chase continued.

"This is Dejen."

Dejen gave a small, amused smile.

"…Welcome to Acadia."

Nick nodded.

"Thanks."

"Nice setup."

Dejen shrugged.

"We make do."

Nick glanced at the items on the table.

"…You run trade out here?"

Cog answered this time.

"Limited."

"Mostly internal."

Nick nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

"That makes sense."

Chase didn't linger.

She turned again.

"We're not done."

Nick sighed softly.

"Of course we're not."

They moved further.

Deeper.

The intermediate level began to thin behind them as they approached another stairwell.

This one narrower.

Less maintained.

Leading down.

Nick stopped at the top of it.

"…Let me guess."

Chase looked at him.

"Yes."

Nick exhaled.

"Yeah."

"Of course it is."

The descent felt different.

The further down they went, the less refined the structure became.

Less living space.

Utility.

Storage.

The air shifted again.

Cooler.

Drier.

The faint hum of systems still present, but quieter here.

Less centralized.

Nick glanced around as they reached the bottom.

"…Okay."

"This feels more like what I expected."

The bottom level opened into a wide, low-ceilinged area.

Storage.

That was the first impression.

Crates stacked along the walls.

Metal containers.

Parts.

Old equipment.

Some organized.

Some clearly in the process of being sorted.

Dim lighting cast long shadows across the space.

Not eerie.

But not comfortable either.

Nick stepped forward slowly.

"…So this is where you keep everything."

Chase nodded.

"Yes."

Sico's gaze moved immediately.

Scanning.

Then he stopped.

Nick followed his line of sight.

"…There."

At the far side of the room.

Near a workbench.

Someone was there.

She didn't notice them at first.

Too focused.

Bent slightly over a table, hands moving quickly as she worked on something small and mechanical.

Tools scattered around her.

Parts laid out in careful, deliberate order.

Nick slowed.

"…That's her."

Sico nodded once.

"Yes."

Kasumi.

She looked exactly like someone who had come here looking for answers.

Not broken.

Not scared.

But consumed.

Focused in a way that shut everything else out.

Her hair was tied back loosely.

Strands falling free as she leaned forward.

Her hands moved with practiced precision.

Adjusting something.

Rewiring.

Testing.

Nick watched her for a second longer.

"…She looks… alright."

Sico observed carefully.

"Yes."

"She is functional."

Nick gave him a sideways look.

"…You always phrase things like that?"

"Yes."

Nick sighed.

"Yeah, I figured."

Chase stepped forward.

Her voice calm.

"Kasumi."

The girl froze.

Not dramatically.

Just…

Paused.

Like a switch had been flipped in her focus.

Then slowly.

She turned.

And saw them.

For a moment, everything stopped.

The room.

The noise.

The world.

Kasumi stood there, half-turned from her workbench, one hand still hovering over a cluster of wires she had been adjusting only seconds ago. A small tool slipped from her fingers and clinked softly against the metal surface, the sound oddly loud in the quiet that followed.

Her eyes moved between them.

First Sico.

Then Nick.

Then back again.

Not recognition.

Not relief.

Just confusion.

Guarded.

"…What do you need?" she asked.

Her voice wasn't hostile.

But it wasn't welcoming either.

It was the kind of tone someone used when they had built something for themselves and didn't want it disturbed.

Nick didn't answer immediately.

For a second, he just looked at her.

Really looked.

Not like someone checking a description.

Not like someone confirming a target.

But like someone trying to understand what kind of person they had just found at the end of everything they'd walked through.

Sico spoke first, his voice calm, measured as always.

"Explain the situation."

Nick let out a quiet breath through his nose.

"…Yeah."

"That's my part."

He stepped forward slightly.

Not too close.

Just enough to make it clear he was the one speaking now.

Kasumi didn't move.

Didn't step back.

But her posture tightened just a fraction.

Nick noticed.

Of course he did.

"Alright," he said, raising one hand slightly in a non-threatening gesture. "Let's start simple."

"We're not here to cause trouble."

Kasumi didn't respond.

Her eyes stayed locked on him.

Waiting.

Nick nodded faintly.

"…Fair enough."

He shifted his weight slightly, then continued.

"Your name's Kasumi Nakano."

It wasn't a question.

Kasumi's expression flickered.

Just slightly.

"…Yes."

Nick gave a small nod.

"Good."

"Then we're in the right place."

A pause.

Then he added,

"Your parents sent us."

That landed.

Not dramatically.

Not like a shockwave.

But it landed.

Kasumi's gaze shifted for just a second.

Downward.

Then back up again.

"…My parents?"

Nick nodded.

"Yeah."

"They're worried about you."

He kept his tone even.

Careful.

"…You disappeared."

"No note."

"No explanation."

"They haven't heard from you."

Kasumi swallowed slightly.

Her fingers curled a bit tighter at her sides.

"…I didn't mean to…"

She trailed off.

Nick didn't push that part.

Not yet.

He just nodded once.

"Yeah."

"I figured you didn't."

He took another small step forward.

Still not closing the distance completely.

Just… making the conversation real.

"They asked me to find you."

Kasumi's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You're a detective?"

Nick smirked faintly.

"Something like that."

"Freelance."

"Flexible rates."

A beat.

Then, more seriously,

"They wanted to know you were safe."

"And… if possible…"

He hesitated just a fraction.

Not because he didn't know what to say.

But because he knew how it would sound.

"…bring you home."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Kasumi looked at him.

Really looked now.

Not just assessing.

Not just guarded.

Thinking.

Processing.

Then she shook her head.

Slowly.

"…No."

Nick blinked once.

Not surprised.

But acknowledging it.

"…No?"

Kasumi's voice steadied.

"I'm not going back."

Sico spoke.

"Clarify reasoning."

Kasumi looked at him.

"…I have to stay here."

Nick crossed his arms slightly.

"…Okay."

"Why?"

Kasumi took a breath.

Not a quick one.

A deliberate one.

Like she had already had this conversation in her head a dozen times before.

"…Because I think I'm a synth."

The words hung in the air.

Sico's expression didn't change.

Nick's did.

Slightly.

Not shock.

Not disbelief.

Just… recognition of a familiar kind of problem.

"…Alright," Nick said slowly. "That's… a pretty big conclusion."

Kasumi nodded.

"I know."

Nick tilted his head.

"…Then walk me through it."

Kasumi hesitated.

Then turned slightly, gesturing vaguely toward her workbench.

"…I started noticing things."

"Memories that don't feel right."

"Moments that don't connect."

She shook her head faintly.

"…It's like pieces are missing."

Nick listened.

Didn't interrupt.

Kasumi continued.

"And then I started having… visions."

Nick's brow furrowed slightly.

"…Visions."

Kasumi nodded.

"Places I've never been."

"Things I don't remember doing."

Her voice tightened just a little.

"…It didn't make sense."

"So I started looking for answers."

She glanced briefly toward the upper levels.

Toward where DiMA was.

"…And I found this place."

Nick followed her gaze.

Then looked back at her.

"…And they told you you might be a synth."

Kasumi hesitated.

"…They didn't say it directly."

"But they didn't deny it either."

Nick exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

"That sounds about right."

Sico stepped forward slightly.

"Your conclusion is unverified."

Kasumi looked at him, frustration flickering briefly.

"…I know that."

"That's why I'm here."

"To find out."

Nick uncrossed his arms.

"…And you think the answer is here."

Kasumi nodded.

"Yes."

Nick studied her for a moment.

Then asked quietly,

"…And what if it isn't?"

Kasumi didn't answer right away.

Her eyes dropped briefly.

Then came back up.

"…Then I'll keep looking."

Nick gave a small, almost amused breath.

"…Yeah."

"I had a feeling you'd say that."

He shifted slightly, glancing at Sico for half a second before returning his attention to her.

"Look."

"I'm not here to tell you what you are."

"That's not my job."

Kasumi's gaze stayed fixed on him.

"…Then what is?"

Nick shrugged faintly.

"My job is simple."

"Find you."

"Make sure you're not in danger."

"Tell your parents what's going on."

He paused.

Then added,

"…And if you're willing…"

"…bring you home."

Kasumi shook her head again.

More firmly this time.

"I'm not going back."

Nick didn't argue immediately.

He just nodded once.

"…Alright."

"Then let's talk about that."

Kasumi frowned slightly.

"…What do you mean?"

Nick stepped a little closer.

Still careful.

Still giving her space.

"You left without telling them anything."

"They don't know if you're alive."

"They don't know if you're safe."

"They don't know why you left."

Kasumi's expression tightened.

"…I didn't want to hurt them."

Nick's voice softened just slightly.

"…Yeah."

"But you did."

The words weren't harsh.

They weren't accusatory.

Just… honest.

Kasumi looked down.

Her hands tightening again.

"…I know."

Nick continued.

"They're not asking for explanations about synths or memories or visions."

"They just want to know you're okay."

Kasumi didn't respond.

Sico spoke.

"Communication would resolve uncertainty."

Kasumi glanced at him.

"…It's not that simple."

Nick nodded.

"Yeah."

"I get that."

He leaned slightly against a nearby crate, shifting into a more relaxed posture.

"But running off into the fog without a word?"

"That's not simple either."

Kasumi let out a quiet breath.

"…I didn't think anyone would come looking for me."

Nick smirked faintly.

"Yeah."

"Turns out you were wrong about that."

A small silence followed.

Then Kasumi looked back up.

Her eyes clearer now.

More resolved.

"…I'm not going back."

Nick studied her.

"…Not even to talk to them?"

Kasumi hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then shook her head again.

"…Not yet."

Nick sighed quietly.

"Yeah."

"I figured."

He pushed himself off the crate and straightened slightly.

"So let me guess."

"You want to stay here."

"Figure out what you are."

"Figure out what's real."

Kasumi nodded.

"Yes."

Nick rubbed the back of his neck.

"…And in the meantime, your parents sit at home wondering if they're ever going to see you again."

Kasumi flinched slightly at that.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

"…I didn't mean for it to be like that."

Nick shrugged.

"Doesn't really matter what you meant."

"What matters is what happened."

Sico stepped in again.

"You are safe."

Kasumi looked at him.

"Yes."

"Then objective partially achieved."

Nick glanced at him.

"…That's one way to put it."

He looked back at Kasumi.

"…Look."

"I'm not dragging you out of here."

"That's not how this works."

Kasumi's shoulders relaxed just a fraction.

"…Good."

Nick raised a finger slightly.

"But."

She frowned.

"…There's always a 'but.'"

Nick smirked faintly.

"Yeah."

"There is."

He lowered his hand.

"You don't want to go back yet?"

"Fine."

"But you owe them something."

Kasumi's expression tightened again.

"…Like what?"

Nick met her gaze.

"Closure."

"A message."

"Something."

"So they know you're alive."

"They know you're not in trouble."

"They know you didn't just… vanish."

Kasumi looked away again.

Thinking.

Processing.

Struggling.

Sico added,

"This would reduce external instability."

Nick glanced at him.

"…You really have a way with words."

Then back to Kasumi.

"…He's right."

"You don't have to go back."

"But you can't just disappear and expect that to be okay."

Kasumi stayed silent.

For a long moment.

The hum of the room filled the space between them.

The faint sound of machinery.

The distant presence of the rest of Acadia above them.

Finally.

"…I need time."

Nick nodded.

"Yeah."

"I figured you'd say that too."

Kasumi looked back at him.

"…I can't leave yet."

"I don't have answers."

Nick shrugged.

"Then don't leave."

"But don't pretend there's no one waiting for you either."

Kasumi swallowed slightly.

"…I know."

Another pause.

Then she asked, more quietly,

"…You really came all the way out here just for that?"

Nick smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

"That's kind of the job."

He glanced briefly toward Sico.

"…And the company."

Sico remained still.

Observing.

Calculating.

But not interfering.

Kasumi looked between them again.

Still uncertain.

Still conflicted.

But no longer completely closed off.

"…I'm not going back."

Nick nodded.

"Yeah."

"I heard you."

He pushed off the crate again, standing fully upright.

"But this isn't over."

Kasumi frowned slightly.

"…What does that mean?"

Nick shrugged.

"It means we're not done talking."

"It means your parents still exist."

"And it means sooner or later…"

"…you're going to have to decide what matters more."

Kasumi didn't answer.

She just stood there.

Caught between two worlds.

The one she left behind.

And the one she had chosen.

And for the first time since they arrived, it wasn't about finding her anymore as it was about what came next.
