...
Kasumi let out a long breath, as though releasing a weight she had been carrying ever since she crossed the water alone.
Kasumi stood quietly for a few moments after giving her answer.
"I'll go home."
The words still seemed almost unreal, even to her.
For months, Acadia had been the only place she had imagined staying. She had arrived convinced that leaving home had been the only way to find answers about herself.
Now she realized something else.
Finding answers didn't have to mean leaving everyone she loved behind.
Sico smiled gently.
"I think that's the right decision."
Kasumi nodded, a small smile finding its way onto her face despite the emotion in her eyes.
"So…"
She laughed softly.
"I guess I should actually pack this time."
Nick grinned.
"Packing before leaving is generally considered an improvement over stealing a boat and disappearing."
Kasumi rolled her eyes with a laugh.
"I'm never going to live that down, am I?"
"Probably not."
"Fair enough."
The lighthearted exchange eased the heaviness that had filled the observatory throughout the morning.
For the first time since Sico had arrived, the conversation wasn't about hidden memories, impossible choices, or old mistakes.
It was simply about someone going home.
Sico folded the map and slipped it back into his jacket.
"Gather everything you brought with you."
Kasumi nodded.
"I don't have much."
"I figured."
"When you're ready…"
He looked toward the center of Acadia.
"…we'll say goodbye properly."
Her smile softened.
"I'd like that."
Kasumi disappeared toward the small room that had become hers during her stay.
The room was modest.
A narrow bed.
A small desk.
Several shelves filled with books Faraday had loaned her.
A toolbox Chase had insisted she borrow after discovering how much Kasumi enjoyed helping with repairs.
None of it had ever truly belonged to her.
She carefully folded the few changes of clothes she had brought from home.
A weathered notebook filled with sketches and observations about Acadia went into her satchel next.
She paused for a moment before picking up a small circuit board Faraday had given her during her first week.
"You'll probably burn this one out while learning," he had joked.
Instead, it had become the first component she had ever successfully repaired.
She smiled to herself before wrapping it carefully inside a piece of cloth.
A quiet knock came at the open doorway.
Chase leaned against the frame.
"Heard you're leaving."
Kasumi looked up.
"I am."
Chase stepped inside.
Neither of them spoke immediately.
Instead, Chase looked around the room with a knowing smile.
"You never really unpacked."
"I guess part of me always knew this wasn't forever."
Chase nodded.
"Maybe."
She walked over and handed Kasumi a small metal screwdriver with a worn blue handle.
"You forgot this."
Kasumi looked surprised.
"I thought that belonged to the workshop."
"It did."
Chase smiled faintly.
"Now it belongs to you."
Kasumi turned it over in her hand.
"I can't take this."
"You can."
"You've earned it."
She looked directly at Kasumi.
"And besides…"
"We've got dozens."
Kasumi laughed quietly.
"Thank you."
Chase nodded once.
"Just promise you'll come back and visit."
"I will."
"And next time…"
Chase folded her arms with a teasing smile.
"…arrive through the front gate."
Kasumi laughed.
"Deal."
A few minutes later, Kasumi stepped back into Acadia's common room with her satchel resting comfortably over one shoulder.
Nearly everyone had gathered without anyone asking them to.
Faraday stood near one of the workbenches.
Cog adjusted his glasses while pretending not to look emotional.
Several younger synths quietly stopped what they were doing.
DiMA stood near the base of the staircase.
When Kasumi approached, he offered a warm smile.
"So…"
"I hear you're going home."
She nodded.
"I am."
"I think it's time."
DiMA's smile grew.
"I think your parents will be very happy."
Kasumi lowered her eyes.
"I hope they'll forgive me."
"They will."
DiMA said with quiet confidence.
"They've been waiting."
She looked back at him.
"I wanted to thank you."
"For everything."
"You gave me a place to stay."
"You answered questions nobody else could."
"You introduced me to people I'll never forget."
DiMA shook his head gently.
"You don't owe me thanks."
"But I appreciate hearing them."
He hesitated.
"I also owe you an apology."
Kasumi frowned slightly.
"For what?"
"For allowing you to carry burdens that never should have become yours."
His expression reflected genuine regret.
"You came here searching for answers."
"I should have remembered that searching doesn't always require carrying someone else's guilt."
Kasumi studied him for a long moment before stepping forward and embracing him.
DiMA hesitated only briefly before returning the hug.
"I'm glad I met you," she whispered.
"So am I."
When they separated, neither spoke for a few seconds.
Sometimes words simply weren't necessary.
Faraday cleared his throat loudly.
"Well…"
"This is getting emotional."
Several people laughed.
Faraday walked over carrying a neatly wrapped package.
"I made something."
Kasumi accepted it carefully.
"What is it?"
"Open it later."
He smiled.
"It's a portable circuit testing kit."
Her eyes widened.
"You built this?"
"Mostly."
"Cog stopped me from making it twice as complicated."
Cog nodded proudly.
"You're welcome."
Laughter spread through the room again.
Kasumi hugged the package tightly.
"I'll treasure it."
"You'd better."
Faraday replied.
"I expect regular reports."
Chase stepped forward next.
"No reports."
She smiled.
"Just visits."
Kasumi nodded immediately.
"You have my word."
One after another, the synths came forward.
Some shook her hand.
Others embraced her.
A few simply wished her well.
None of the farewells felt dramatic.
They felt honest.
Like family seeing someone off on a journey.
Finally, Sico glanced toward Nick.
"I think it's time."
Nick nodded.
"Before her parents wear a path through Far Harbor looking for her."
Kasumi laughed.
"They probably already have."
Together they walked toward Acadia's entrance.
The heavy gate slid open with its familiar metallic groan.
Outside, the Republic convoy remained exactly as disciplined as Sico had left it.
Three Humvees stood in formation beneath the afternoon sun.
Twenty Republic soldiers maintained their positions with practiced professionalism.
Lieutenant Parker noticed the group approaching.
His attention immediately shifted to Kasumi and the satchel over her shoulder.
A knowing smile crossed his face.
"So…"
"She's coming with us."
Sico nodded.
"She is."
Parker looked at Kasumi.
"Welcome aboard."
She smiled shyly.
"Thank you."
Several soldiers from the convoy offered friendly nods.
Many of them recognized Kasumi from earlier operations around the Island.
Grant climbed down from the second Humvee.
"Good to see you again."
"You too."
"I hear you're heading home."
Kasumi nodded.
"I finally am."
Collins grinned.
"I bet your parents are going to hug you first."
He paused thoughtfully.
"…then probably yell at you."
Laughter spread through the nearby soldiers.
Kasumi laughed too.
"That's exactly what I'm expecting."
Doctor Hayes approached with her medical bag over one shoulder.
"How are you feeling?"
"A little nervous."
Hayes smiled kindly.
"That's perfectly normal."
She glanced toward Sico.
"She's in good hands."
Sico nodded once.
"We'll see her safely home."
Near the gate, DiMA and the residents of Acadia had followed them outside.
The afternoon breeze stirred gently across the rocky hill as both communities stood facing one another.
Humans.
Synths.
Republic soldiers.
For years, meetings like this would have been almost unthinkable.
Now there was no fear.
Only quiet respect.
DiMA stepped forward one final time.
He looked toward Sico.
"Sico."
Sico met his gaze.
"We'll begin."
Sico nodded.
"The first step."
"No more hiding."
DiMA smiled.
"No more hiding."
He then looked toward Lieutenant Parker and the Republic soldiers.
"Please thank everyone at Vim! for accepting us."
Parker answered with a respectful nod.
"We'll pass the message along."
DiMA's eyes finally returned to Kasumi.
"Safe travels."
"I'll visit soon."
Kasumi promised.
"I'll be looking forward to it."
Sico opened the passenger door of the lead Humvee.
"You'll ride with us."
Kasumi looked surprised.
"Really?"
Nick tipped his hat with a grin.
"I figured someone ought to keep us entertained on the drive."
She laughed.
"I'll do my best."
She climbed into the rear seat while Nick settled beside her.
Sico took the front passenger seat as the driver prepared the vehicle.
Lieutenant Parker returned to his own position.
Sergeant Mason completed one final walk around the convoy.
Everything was ready.
He keyed his radio.
"All vehicles report."
"Second ready."
"Third ready."
"Lead ready."
Outside, the synth guards stepped back from the gate.
The road stretched downhill through the pines toward Far Harbor.
Sico picked up the convoy microphone.
"Our destination is Far Harbor."
He glanced briefly into the rearview mirror.
Kasumi looked out through the windshield, taking one last look at Acadia.
She wasn't leaving forever.
She knew that now.
She was simply going home.
Sico smiled faintly before speaking into the radio.
"Convoy…"
"…move out."
The lead Humvee rolled forward first.
Its tires crunched across the gravel road before reaching the cracked coastal highway.
The second Humvee followed at the proper interval.
Then the third settled into formation behind them.
Standing near Acadia's gate, DiMA, Faraday, Chase, Cog, and the other synths watched until the convoy gradually disappeared between the towering pines.
No one waved frantically.
No dramatic goodbyes echoed across the mountain.
Just quiet smiles.
The kind shared between people confident they would meet again.
Inside the lead Humvee, Kasumi continued watching through the rear window until Acadia vanished from sight.
Then the convoy continued south along the winding island roads beneath a sky that remained brilliantly clear.
For the first hour, very little was said.
The steady rumble of the Humvee's diesel engine filled the cab while the Atlantic appeared and disappeared through gaps in the pine forest.
Kasumi sat quietly in the back seat beside Nick.
Every so often she looked out the window, recognizing places she had passed months earlier when she had traveled in the opposite direction.
Only then she had been alone.
Frightened.
Certain she was running toward the only place that could answer the questions she carried.
Now she wasn't running from anything.
She was going home.
Nick noticed her staring out the window.
"Nervous?"
Kasumi smiled sheepishly.
"A little."
"A little?"
She laughed quietly.
"Alright… a lot."
Nick nodded knowingly.
"That's normal."
"I keep thinking about what I'm going to say."
"You don't need a perfect speech."
"I know."
"But I've had months to think."
"And somehow…"
"…I still don't know how to begin."
Sico turned slightly in his seat.
"Begin with the truth."
Kasumi looked toward him.
"You made a mistake."
"You've learned from it."
"And you've come home."
He smiled gently.
"For most parents…"
"That's enough."
Kasumi rested her head lightly against the seat.
"I hope you're right."
"I think I am."
The conversation drifted into comfortable silence once more.
Outside, the landscape slowly changed.
The forests gave way to rocky coastlines.
Fishing shacks began appearing beside the road.
Weathered docks stretched into the harbor waters.
Smoke curled lazily from chimneys as fishermen repaired nets outside their homes.
Lieutenant Parker's voice crackled across the convoy radio.
"Lead."
Sico picked up the microphone.
"Go ahead."
"Far Harbor ahead."
Sico looked through the windshield.
Beyond the next bend, the familiar walls of Far Harbor gradually came into view.
The massive gate stood open as merchants, fishermen, and hunters moved in and out beneath the watchful eyes of the town guards.
Beyond the walls, fishing boats bobbed gently against the docks.
The town looked exactly as it always had.
Busy.
Hard-working.
Alive.
Nick smiled faintly.
"Feels strange coming back here after everything."
"It does."
Sico replied.
"Hopefully today's visit is quieter than the last."
"I'll drink to that."
The lead Humvee slowed as it approached the entrance.
Several Harbormen immediately recognized the Republic convoy.
Word had spread quickly over recent months.
The Republic wasn't viewed as strangers anymore.
They were allies.
One guard raised a hand in greeting.
"Sico!"
Sico returned the gesture through the open window.
"Good afternoon."
The convoy rolled through the gate without delay.
People along the main street looked up from their work.
Some offered waves.
Others simply smiled before returning to unloading fishing catches or repairing equipment.
Children pointed excitedly toward the three military vehicles as they passed.
"They're back!"
An older fisherman chuckled.
"Seems they're becoming regular visitors."
The convoy came to a stop near the harbor office.
Before anyone climbed out, the front door of the office opened.
Captain Avery stepped outside.
She wore her familiar weather-beaten coat, her expression brightening as she recognized both Sico and Nick.
"Commander."
She walked across the street with an easy smile.
"Nick."
Nick tipped his hat.
"Good to see you, Avery."
"And you."
She noticed Kasumi climbing carefully from the rear of the Humvee.
Recognition crossed her face.
"Kasumi?"
Kasumi smiled politely.
"Hello, Avery."
"I'm glad to see you're alright."
"I am."
Avery nodded warmly before looking back toward Sico.
"I wasn't expecting to see you today."
Sico smiled.
"Neither were we."
She folded her arms.
"So…"
"What brings the Republic to Far Harbor this time?"
Sico glanced briefly toward the observatory hidden beyond the distant mountains before answering.
"I've just come from Acadia."
Avery raised an eyebrow.
"Acadia?"
"That's right."
Her curiosity deepened.
"How did that go?"
Sico's expression remained calm.
"Better than I expected."
Avery waited patiently.
Sico continued.
"I wanted to let you know personally before anything else happened."
She straightened slightly.
"I'm listening."
"Acadia has agreed to join the Freemasons Republic."
For a heartbeat…
Avery simply stared at him.
The sounds of the harbor seemed to fade into the background.
"…They've what?"
Nick smiled faintly.
"It surprised us too."
Avery blinked several times, making certain she hadn't misunderstood.
"You're telling me…"
"DiMA agreed to that?"
"He did."
"Willingly?"
"Entirely willingly."
She looked from Sico to Nick and back again.
"I honestly didn't think I'd ever hear those words."
"Neither did I."
Sico admitted.
"But a great deal changed today."
Avery remained thoughtful.
"And what exactly does this mean?"
"It means Acadia is no longer standing alone."
Sico explained.
"It also means we're beginning the process of opening communication between Acadia and Far Harbor."
Avery's expression immediately became more serious.
"You mean…"
"People coming here?"
"And Harbormen visiting Acadia."
Sico nodded.
"Not tomorrow."
"Not all at once."
"But gradually."
"Carefully."
He spoke with the same measured confidence he had used when speaking to DiMA.
"There'll be meetings."
"Trade."
"Technical assistance."
"Conversations."
"The first steps toward building trust."
Avery looked out toward the harbor for a long moment.
She knew exactly how some people in town would react.
Not everyone had forgotten old fears.
Some had lost family to synth rumors.
Others distrusted anything connected to the Institute.
It wouldn't be easy.
Finally she looked back at Sico.
"I won't lie."
"There'll be resistance."
"I expected that."
Sico replied.
"But I'd rather people argue after meeting each other than continue fearing someone they've never spoken to."
Avery slowly nodded.
"I can respect that."
She let out a thoughtful breath.
"So…"
"I should prepare the town."
"Yes."
"I wanted you to hear it from me first."
"Not through rumors."
She appreciated that more than she could express.
"Thank you."
She looked toward several Harbormen unloading crates farther down the dock.
"I'll speak with the townsfolk."
"If Acadia's people come here…"
"I'll make sure the Harbormen and Harborwomen keep calm."
She smiled faintly.
"It may take some convincing."
Nick chuckled.
"I'd be worried if it didn't."
Avery laughed.
"No arguments there."
She extended her hand toward Sico.
"I'll do everything I can."
Sico shook it firmly.
"I know you will."
Kasumi watched the exchange quietly.
Only a short time ago, the thought of Far Harbor and Acadia working together would have sounded impossible.
Now…
It was beginning.
One conversation at a time.
Avery turned toward Kasumi.
"I suppose you're heading home."
Kasumi nodded.
"I am."
Avery smiled warmly.
"Your parents will be overjoyed."
"I hope so."
"They will."
She said with certainty.
"They've never stopped asking if anyone had seen you."
Kasumi lowered her eyes.
The guilt returned for a brief moment.
Sico noticed and gently changed the subject.
"We're borrowing the Nakano boat."
Avery nodded.
"Still tied where they left it."
"I had someone keep an eye on it."
"Thank you."
"It's the least we could do."
A short while later, the Republic convoy pulled into a secure area near the harbor warehouse.
Lieutenant Parker stepped out of the second Humvee.
"Commander?"
Sico turned toward him.
"The convoy remains here."
"Refuel the vehicles."
"Let everyone get something to eat."
"We'll return after we're back."
Parker nodded immediately.
"We'll be ready."
Grant looked toward Kasumi with a smile.
"Good luck."
She smiled back.
"Thanks."
Doctor Hayes gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
"Everything's going to be alright."
"I hope so."
"It will."
Hayes replied confidently.
Together, Sico, Nick, and Kasumi made their way toward the familiar pier.
The small fishing boat Bob Nakano had lent them weeks earlier still rested exactly where Avery had said it would.
It had been cleaned and tied securely alongside the dock.
Nick stepped aboard first.
"Still floats."
Sico smiled.
"That's usually a good sign."
Kasumi laughed despite herself.
"You two really aren't nervous about this?"
Nick looked at her.
"Oh, we're nervous."
"We're just better at hiding it."
She smiled.
"That somehow makes me feel better."
Sico untied the mooring ropes while Nick checked the small engine.
A moment later it rumbled to life with a familiar sputtering growl.
The boat eased away from the dock.
Behind them, Far Harbor slowly grew smaller.
Ahead stretched the calm waters separating Mount Desert Island from the mainland.
Kasumi stood near the bow, one hand resting lightly against the railing.
The sea breeze lifted strands of her dark hair as she watched the coastline ahead.
Nick joined her.
"You've been awfully quiet."
"I've been thinking."
"Dangerous habit."
She smiled.
"I know."
After a moment she asked quietly,
"Do you think they'll recognize me?"
Nick blinked.
"Kasumi…"
"They're your parents."
She nodded.
"I know."
"But after everything…"
"What if they just see someone who ran away?"
Nick looked toward Sico, who was keeping the boat on course.
Then back at Kasumi.
"I think they'll see their daughter."
"And I think that'll be enough."
Kasumi looked toward the distant mainland where the Nakano residence waited beyond the shoreline.
For months she had imagined this moment countless different ways.
Some ended with anger.
Others with tears.
A few with silence.
None of those imagined conversations mattered anymore.
Because this time, she wasn't facing them alone.
Sico stood at the helm, guiding the small boat steadily across the calm afternoon waters.
Nick remained beside Kasumi.
And somewhere ahead, beyond the quiet waves and the familiar coastline, Kenji and Rei Nakano were still waiting for the daughter they had never stopped hoping would walk back through their front door.
